My two asshole dogs just tore ass out the front door after a skunk, and they both got sprayed good! Then they came back in the house and ran throughout the whole place! I’ve never felt with this before, and I’m in trouble!

Tomato sauce and paste for them, as well as to wash your hands and arms with after bathing them. For some reason, most houses have the paste and sauce but not juice. Found out V8 works in a pinch too. Spray some Ozium in the house and air it out.
Good luck!

Nature's miracle makes a skunk formula.
Use it liberally.

Its different than the Pee one that's more common. (for obvious reasons)

I’ve been there before. My dogs tore up a skunk and got destroyed with the spray. Then they ran back into the house and brought that funk up and down the hallways as I was trying to corral them to boot them outside.

I threw both dogs in the pool and then gave them two or three baths after. Anything they touched had to be thrown away.

Good luck, that shit is nasty AF.

Fart squirrel strikes again!!

Funny we don’t seem to get them in AZ but I could smell the bastards all over Anaheim Hills when I stopped by my dad’s two weeks ago.
You don't get them down there. F'rs would burst into flames during summer. We have them up here. The rare and weird creatures are porcupines....that's some weird, waddling stuff

Another vote for Dawn Dish Soap. The spray is oily and the dish soap will cut it. My Golden has gotten sprayed twice.

My little window licker has been hit twice in the last year right in the face. Apparanly he and the skunk are buddies but then the skunk gets pissed and blasts him in the face while he’s sniffing around. Both times he’s came into the house. That skunk spray is oily and anything the dogs rub up on it will stick to.

Dogs need to be bathed multiple times with the skunk spray shampoo, it will cut the smell a lot.

Anything 3’ or below in the house the dogs rubbed on needs to be cleaned, once you clean that Shit off the surface you put out bowls of vinegar and that will help for some reason.

House will smell for a few weeks

Fucking awesome when it happens in the middle of the night and it’s 40* out. For sure the neighbors thought we were tweakers that night, all the windows and doors open, lights on and were scrubbing the walls at 2:00 am. Doggy door gets shut at night now😂

For those who’ve never experienced it - up close to it, the odor of a Skunk seems entirely different from what you get a whiff of driving down the road. It is beyond terrible!

Been through this in Sept with my Boi getting a massive spray ... right in the face.
Don't use water to try to wash it off. The skunk spray is an oil base ... and water actually sets it on their fur and skin after it dries.

What I would do is IMMEDIATELY give them a big soaking of vegetable oil. Any kind will do (hopefully you've got a gallon of canola or peanut on hand).
After this oil has really worked in ... use Dawn dish soap... and hope for the best.

^^^^ this

Under no circumstance rub it into the skin.
Use a "pinch and pull" to get it out of the fur and not rubbed into the skin. Once it's in the skin expect a stinky dog every time it gets wet for months to come.

Don't bother with tomatoes. total and utter waste. And a mess.
We have 5 large ranch dogs. Every October, the skunks around here get to feeling frisky and seem to forget that our dogs DGAF about skunk smell or life.
Our dogs kill and sometimes eat (yeah, I know, it's terrible) every skunk that makes the poor life choice to come onto our property.
Make up a batch (or three) of the following:
  1. 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (found at any pharmacy or supermarket)
  2. 1/4 cup of baking soda.
  3. 1 teaspoon of liquid Dawn dishwashing soap.
Lather up the dog good. The hardest part is they typically get sprayed in the face, and that is the hardest part to wash. take your time and scrub them up good. Try to keep it out of their eyes.
Rinse.
Repeat if the skunking was particularly bad.
Rinse.
Then final soap with a mild dog shampoo like oatmeal shampoo to make sure no lingering effects of the skunk shampoo irritates their skin.
This really works. We've had to do it so many times.

As for your house-that's harder. You might be able to wash some stuff with the skunk shampoo you made-but be careful as it may have a bleaching effect on things like carpet. One trick that works well for vehicles is to place a big bag of fresh coffee grounds inside. the grounds act as sort of a nice smelling charcoal and absorb the stink.

We were both out the door for work, and they do this. We had no idea it was a skunk at first. It smells like a brake cleaner and gear oil mixture. We saw it in the camera. I’ll try to post the vid.

You're right. When it's fresh, it definitely has a petroleum scent and it's not at all like the smell of dead one on the road.

I was camping at Canyon Lake and one came cruising by the campground, thank god my Golden Retriever was inside the camper. There's tons of wildlife in the Superstition Mts.

I have heard that Fels - Naptha soap is the best way to go.

It’s definitely an odd smell when it’s fresh. Like a fresh asphalt & 90 wt gear oil type smell, it’s nasty.

"Who are you calling Frances?" 🤣

Man that sucks! Our Golden got hit a few months ago too. Tomato sauce bath followed up by multiple dog shampoo baths. The aroma dissipated after a few days.

Fortunately we’ve got hardwood floors downstairs, but they ran upstairs and into our bedroom! The bedding is fucked, and the carpet is a maybe.

As kids our family had a cabin in Crestline. All of us kids slept downstairs in a large bunk room. Winter time with snow, Skunks began fighting with something underneath that bunk room. Then they began spraying. The smell actually made my sister and a cousin puke. About 8 of us kids made it up the stairway all at once. With puke now on the steps of the stairway. A real Shit Show to say the least, long before we even knew the term.

We've been trying to trap a Skunk for several days now.
This is the only off the shelf stuff that works with Dawn dish soap. Ya get it at the feed store.
Chickens recipe is a good way to roll too.

At what point do you 1) just pay someone to clean 2) sell the house as is or 3) burn it down?
The wife is melting down hard right now. The problem is now that we’ve been throwing bedding, rugs towels, etc outside, and washing the dogs. We can’t even smell it anymore, but I know we now smell as bad as the dogs!

My Jack Russell used to get sprayed by a skunk as often as she possibly could. The recipe posted by The Chicken actually works great. As for the skunk smell in the house. I found that Nature’s miracle brand urine odor enzyme spray will neutralize the odor if you can find exactly where it’s coming from. They have it in the pet section at wal mart and other pet stores.

In the days I had my police K-9, I had two things in the trunk of my car to eliminate skunk odors.
1) Nature's Miracle Skunk removal liquid,
2) Massengill Douche Powder.

The combo worked wonders!

I feel for you. My cousin's dogs in Nebraska had a run in with what they thought was a pack of skunks. They moved out of their house for almost 2 months after. They tried everything that was recommended to them. They ended up using almost the exact stuff the chicken recommended. I think she might have had an allergy to the skunks spray, that's why she stayed away so long.
