Reservations for camping opened this morning at 0700 and are apparently sold out already from March - September?? And roughly $320 per night for two people? To camp?

The site also says there is no day hiking and a one night stay is mandatory. I wonder if that has more to do with the length of the hike in or just a money thing.

Anybody know any alternatives to this ridiculousness? Can it actually be hiked in a day and how do they make sure you have an overnight reservation?

It's about 10 miles each way from the rim to the camp ground so a day hike isn't practical. You pretty much need to be online or call right at 7:00am when the reservations open.

We we just there in early November. We stayed at the lodge, which is just a step up from camping. It’s pretty run down. You don’t want to hike both ways in 1 day, it’s a pretty tough hike on the way back up the canyon! Plus your going to want to spend a few days there exploring all the waterfalls. It’s surreal !!!

I would call them back and try to go in October. The weather is perfect then!

Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls are the two main falls on the Havasupai reservation. Some websites say Havasupai Falls but I believe that refers to the whole area.

According to my Garmin GPS it was 12 miles from the parking lot to the middle of the Village and another 2 miles to the camping area. We had a large group and made the hike to the Village in 4 1\2 hrs carrying and average of 40 lbs of gear each for our week stay. We ending having to helicopter out due to a flash flood on the final day. The helicopter ride was like $80 for a 4 minute ride but had great views.

Do you still need to get on a list or can you helicopter in and out just on a whim ?

If your looking for an alternative to Havasupai Falls check out Calf Creek Utah. Shorter easier hike, cheap overnight camping (permit required), less people and equally as beautiful. Plus there is a lot more to see in Utah... JD Dearden to the white courtesy phone...

Kind of what I've been thinking now. Get dropped off at the parking lot, hike in earlier in the morning, see the falls and screw around a bit, then have the helicopter pick us up in the afternoon. Still a day trip wth no overnight BS reservations required.

Would that be a possibility to do or do they somehow check to make sure you have an overnight camping deal?

The helicopter option wasn't as available as that. There are only certain times and days it runs, you can schedule a flight ahead of time however the locals always fly first, in or out so you may still be waiting awhile for your turn. You will still need a reservation to get access to the area.
