Herbst boat. I remember it from a poker run we ran in the early 2000's out in the big blue.

From what I remember Ron Pratt paid build that mold don't know if he ever got his boat out of the deal though.
Yes that is Ron's old boat, never got finished.

I vaguely remember seeing a photo of a 540, under a tarp, but it had Ron's teal hockey stripes on it like the rest of his boats; "Happiness is 154' of Hallett". The all white I think would have been the plug.

His Echo Bay set up was so on point. It played a large roll in us having a 240. So envious, just 🤤🤤🤤 at it leaving the slip in the mornings.

👆Can't be a plug. I think maybe Hull #2 or #3 if that Teal one was actually popped, or it was just a figment of my imagination.

Not for nothing, I posted in 2021 saying the exact same thing. Maybe it was white all along. I distinctly remember a large Hallett, same transom shape, port windows, on a low-boy type +6 axle trailer, tarp over the cockpit and circa-95' Hallett teal graphics. You would not need/use this type of trailer for a 40, 34 etc. It is hard to mistake the shape of this 54 with any of the other models. I was hoping my internet sleuthing would find this picture again, but to no avail. It is likely lost in the black hole of the web. What did come up was the previous RDP thread 😆 when the red boat was being sold. It is not on my computer either, I screen shot a lot of shit when I see it. Oh well, moving on.

Still would be cool to hear the story on the subject boat. Molded originally in white, or quickly re-gelled in white, if it was the Pratt boat laid up in 2002/2003 after Terrible's boat, then alot could have been done to it in the past 20years. It looks worked on so calling it a 2021 is interesting too. Somebody was doing something to it with all the scaffolding around it. It was such an undertaking to add this boat to the line-up, would be fun to see a second one finished.

It's been quite a while ago (so my recall isn't the best), but Ron Pratt's 540 was boat #2 and was initially intended for triple supercharged 1000HP Pfaff engines. According to Nick, the Pratt boat was a one-step forward two-steps back project (lots and lots of requested changes and even a thought of converting it from a closed deck to an open bow). Eventually Nick and Ron agreed to relocate the partially complete 540 to Boulder City, NV where more modifications could be done under the watchful eye of Pratt. Somewhere along the line the project got way off track when it was out of the Hallett Irwindale shop and was obviously never finished to my knowledge.

The Herbst 540 was a great performing boat from what I saw (I did the initial helicopter photos and video of it during a brochure shoot offshore between Newport and Dana Point Harbor).

i will say this, the boat had a blister problem, air in the skin most likely

I’m only aware of the all red one that they built. This looks like the original plug?

The original plug was crushed by Nick at Hallett. A magazine and some online pics showed it being towed to a wrecking yard.
Somebody has that mold. Jerry at Barron or Nordic?

Boating world is full of fascinating stories. Do we have any further info on this one?

Hull number 1 was Pratt's. Never finished. Was cut to have triple Phaff's with #6 drives. Hull number Two was the Red Herbst. Nordic has the molds, also hull #1 is sitting in the lot as pictured. The big wood boxes contain all the stuff to rig it. Fun fact, the three engines and drives ended up in the Orange Catalina Ski Race boat. The engines didnt work out so the put in the Merc Race QC4V 1100/1350's.
Pratt kept changing his mind on what he wanted to do with the boat, so it never got finished.
