@River Dirt 2 post about his dad's house burning down in the Eaton fire and pics of his gun safe made me want to post this.

This is an American Security AMSEC safe, it survived extremely well is a very hot fire. They are not cheap at the 9k range but appears they are worth it.

What else do you guys have that are supposed to perform like this one

Soo. Not that I have a lot to save (mostly family photos going back 4 generations) I’ve got a large 90 minute self sealing safe, with a 60 minute smaller safe inside that and, a 60 minute fire and waterproof bag inside that. Hoping that might do the trick in the event of a catastrophic event.

Are they really? I was less than half that for my Amsec. It's been a few years.

So…200 years from now it will be like trying to open the Egyptian pyramids? 😎

I bought a 120 min AMSEC specifically over the 60 or 90 hoping that if i do endure a fire it will do its best to protect my beanie baby collection as i dont own any firearms
You have got a fortune sitting in that safe, is that gonna be your retirement 🤣

Flop it on its face and attack the back of it. you can be in it in 10 mins. Most gun safes have thin back walls and floors. very easy access.

100198.jpeg

4000lb Hamilton, no fire protection, 30 min TR/TL rated, and the amsec next to it has a 1/2" plated floor anchored down with 3/4" all thread epoxied in.

on the large one the door alone weighs 1200lbs. was a bank vault removed from a grocery store.

I have a safe that came out of a Costco that is very similar to that large black one. My friend's mom worked for a safe company, and I was able to get a great deal on it. Big, heavy fucker!

Same deal, I got hooked up with a guy that does removals, the price was right. It was removed from a Ralphs that had a chase satellite branch. No fire protection, but it's tool and torch rated. and weighs 4000 pounds 🤣
Being in my garage with every tool known to man to open a safe I thought this was a good choice.

It's a great safe.

Curious, how is something torch rated?

Same with mine, No fire protection at all. I have gun safes with fire protection but this safe is beast. It's identical to yours except it has a digital keypad. Other than that, it looks exactly the same.

In my picture the smaller safe is an AMSEC safe, it has a thinner sides, back and floor than the door, I gutted it and welded in a 1/2" plate to the floor and tied it to the walls, then anchored it to the floor.

Empty it weighs about 900# and could be easily rocked over and attacked, now it's trapped on three sides and bolted to the floor, making it tougher to rock over and attack.

Newer AMSEC safes may be different but this one was not.

So when shopping I found out the manufacturer has a "lowest advertised price" that retailers cannot advertise below. That said, they will sell well below that. West Coast Safes off the 15 has about the best deals on Amsec. He also carries a shit ton of other stuff if you really want to step it up. He said he doesn't consider anything under a ton to be a true safe. As to fire ratings, one only has to go back to HeadlessHula's thread when his shit burned down. The safe survived, but the contents didn't fare so well.

I got my Amsec with additional plate. It's 1200 empty compared to 800 without the plating. I'm sure someone with some time and tools can get in it with not much issue. I'm just keeping the neighborhood kids from getting my shit. Anyone intent on getting it is gonna get it.

I went down a rabbit hole on all of that, I had already bough my used one, so the next best option was to try and make it more secure. mine is the 800 or 900 pound option.

I did fire sprinklers when i built the garage, not sure it will help or not, but it seemed like good insurance.

They are a double wall with a concrete type filler in-between the 2 walls, all the way around, the safe in the video is probably around 1700-1800lbs. There is another company that does the concrete filler as well but perform better however they are like 30% more money. I can't remember the company, I heard about them on here so hopefully they will chime in again

It has to do with the temp and speed that you can cut it. A lot of the fire rated safes have thinner skins sandwiching cement or ceramic filler.

As with anything, a thief can break it, just the time needed changes.

I don't need a gun safe that's fire rated...at the bottom of the lake they're safe enough.

I was going to mention headless hula fire earlier. But I thought I would just not type(keep my mouth shut). He had a nice safe and it didnt do shit for the stuff inside.

What is kind of interesting is the safe company's say "120 minute" fire proof. But none give a temperature rate. Sure the safe may not burn but from the radiant heat of the safe it's going to burn/distroy what is inside it.. jmo

At 3:10 he says the safe puts moisture into the safe. What does that mean and how does that work in a fire situation ?

When we were ocean boating we had a 1 minute evacuation plan on the boat.
Specific items already at the ready and into the dingy we go,, easy launch.

At the house the wife has the same.
Cat, Dog, top drawer in the file cabinet and one of the guns safes is opened and several weapons all loaded quickly in the back of the pick up and away we go.

I remember the Malibu Fire over 30 years ago, people shown on TV loading their bread machines.

All I can say is if there is a will, there is a way. Banks thought ATMs were theft proof. Really? Apparently not if you steal a forklift first.

I have a liberty that’s rated at 75 minutes.

People don’t realize that those costco safes usually only have a 30 minute rating and also don’t look at the number of locking bolts, size of the bolts, and if they are on all four sides of the door. I mean, I get they are big safes for the price when it comes to fire protection and security you get what you pay for.

Any safe is better than no safe. Amsec's are built like a brick shit house. I have a Cannon now that will become my ammo safe when we build a new home and I'll upgrade to a Amsec. But all of this will be in a basement pill box anyway....

If you saw the rest of the shitshow:eek:

Fire sprinklers tied to an alarm system in a detached garage. Not ideal, but it is what it is.

Also if you ask my wife it could all burn to the ground, everything I haul into that garage cost her money 🤣

Not really but you get the idea.

You can look up video on how to improve fire rating to a lesser quality safe to make an affordable safe higher fire rated to make sure your contents are not burnt during a fire

If there is a fire and I have 10 minutes to leave, I'm taking everything in the safe with me. I have a big dewalt rolling tool box next to it so I can load it and boogey.

I also have a Cannon bought through costco online. Commander 48. Stuffed it in my office closet then replaced the closet door with a solid raised panel door with a dual sided deadbolt. 75 min @1400 with water protection. It was around a grand delivered 5 years ago.

I have no complaints. The lag bolts are urethane sealed also.

My Dad had a 2.5 hour file cabinet that I bitched about every time he moved, especially to the second story townhouse. He kept important papers, jewelry, and other stuff in it.

When the building caught fire and burned to the ground, the file cabinet was found intact in the debris, and I decided the old man might be smarter than me. He bought another one.

I did not buy the safe from Costco, it was a safe that Costco put their cash drawers in. When I bought it there were slots for the cash drawers to slide into. The safe company I bought it from replaced it because of an issue with the lock. I had the safe company cut out the cash drawer slots, put on a new keypad and repaint the entire safe.

I have other large fire rated safes. I have a 2000 pound gun safe built into a wall inside my house in Havasu. It is rated at 1400 degrees for 75 minutes and can withstand submersion for 7 days.

I have evacuated a couple of times, and I load my 20' enclosed trailer with all safe contents and ammunition.

Doesn't matter what it is given enough time you can cut into any of them.

I think the idea is that the average bro isn't going to be carrying an oxyacetylene torch when he breaks in.

No, but many safes are in garages and many garages have tools not locked up. One inmate years ago had his broken into with his own concrete saw. Cut the corner off and plucked out the rifles.
