More details to follow! These pictures are after we pulled to shore with big ass deisel truck.
Did you dive in and check bottom of boat? Do you have any thru-hull valves? If so check clamps and hoses. She was about to completely submerge, when we finally got chains/ropes connected to the truck and pulled it to the beach.
Batterys where completely submerged and the engine about about to submerge…
That sucks. There is a bright side though. Those kids woke you up, and did what they could to help. Better than waking up to a Bimini top, an oil slick and a park ranger. The shortest possible story, to get the details.
Launched the boat at 5pm, it was going to be anchored to a bungy teather/system out front of our camp site for 7-8 days camping/dirtbikes/boating/fishing trip….
Launched boat, drove it to the camp ground via the water/lake, anchored with no problems. Nothing out of the ordinary at all. Something we have done hundreds of times.
Got to shore, setting up the tents/kitchen, offloading dirt bikes, getting drink coolers going, cooking dinner, looked at the boat all evening till dark. Nothing was amiss. The boat was literally 150 yards from me…
Around 1am, I wake up to some people hollering a boat is sinking… Get my eyes opened, dressed, glass’s on, and yep, my boat has about 6-8 college kids, doing their best to help us.
One kid pulls up a lifted Dodge deisel to the beach, we connect ropes/ chains to the eye of the boat, and drag it as close to shore as possible to prevent the engine from truly going under water, it got pretty high up the cowling, but it was dark and doing my best to prevent an oil spill in a CA lake, and not get any one hurt in the process..
Got the boat pulled up enough so its completely grounded to the bottom of the lake and the engine is out of the water.. nothing electrical will work at all, batterys are completely submerged. Tied it off and went to bed… Didnt sleep.. obviously…
Next day,
So this is a 2007 Hurricane Deck boat with a Yamaha 150hp and maybe 160 hours. I wake up bring and early, have a cup of coffee, waiting for the sun to come up. Walk into the water, start opening hatchs, trying to figure this out. No holes in the boat, rear access hatchs near the outboard are on securely, water didnt enter their, plug is in, boat is totally flooded… WTF… The boat has a bait pump…

I shut the valve,
I run down to local auto parts supply place that happened to have 2 marine batterys, bilge pump, hose, clamps and everything I needed to try and pump the water out. Rig up my portable bilge pump, start pumping and bailing for hours…. And hours… lots of beers, sweating my ass off, and finally the boat floats.
Pull the old batterys out, and install the new batterys in its locations, and I have some power. The engine tilts up/down, but clicks when I turn it over… batterys must be low, from the bilge pump… grabbed a battery jump starter and same problem. Pull the plugs, no water in their…hmmmm…
Had a buddy tow me to the launch ramp, got it on a trailer and called US Boat/Geico.
Bottom line, the bait pump hose fitting literally snapped in the middle. How that happened in the middle of the night??? Who freaking knows. My assumption is the bilge pump ran for hours, drained the batterys and boat filled up, and I got woke up.
I PROMISE ALL OF YOU… I CHECKED THAT BOAT EVERY 30MINs visually before it got dark and I went to bed. The bilge was not pumping water prior to me going to bed. Yes, I test the bilge pump once the new batterys where installed. Worked perfectly.
Worst news of all, I have never used the “bait pump” or the live well on this deck boat. Didnt even recall it had one.
I have owned lots and lots of boats, mostly fishing boats to 30ft and twin yammy 250’s, a couple of offshore cats, several run abouts, advantage, eliminators, but this stupid deck boat was one of my favorites..
Why, it never broke.. it started every time, never broke down once. Stupid easy to clean/detail, sat plenty of people, ton of storage, ran up to 40mph with one person, but did ok skiing and tubing. Road the slop awesome, GOT THE FUCKING JOB DONE, with no fuss.. great on fuel,
Sorry for your pain here ... stupid jet boat guy question , is that yellow device a bilge pump ?The shortest possible story, to get the details.

It looks like it might be bi-directional pump, or is that another on off valve On the top?live well pump, also sometimes used for sinks and deck washdowns

I would plumb it with a 90, and bring it up above the waterline, before running it to the pump. No Hose clamps.
define practically?
There are few people on RDP who have more hours on water than me.shit happens, if you're a new boater or been boating for 50 years.
we all have had our hours of shame boating.
I had something very similar happen. I took out my brand new fishing CC with some friends and next thing we knew we were sinking off of San Clemente. I had no idea where the water was coming from. Hailed the CG on VHF and they handed me off to Oceanside Harbor Patrol. They quickly responded and pumped the water out of my boat. I then followed them full speed back to Oceanside Harbor and we got in onto the trailer. The bait tank was plumbed with a through hull and the hose had fallen off allowing water to flow into the boat. By the time the water was at our feet, the hull under the inner liner was full of water. We came really close to sinking that day.Years back, I noticed my boat taking on water (Luckily I was only a few miles out in the ocean). I lifted all the inspection panels and notice the plastic bait tank dump was cracked and letting tons of water in since it was sitting below the water line. Luckily when I got on plane, the dump fitting was above water. I hauled ass back and put her on the trailer quickly. Hot Damn my Pooper hole was clinched shut until she was finally back on the trailer!!!
Man, sinking out at SCI would be one scary F'n feeling! Nice Save!I had something very similar happen. Lake Alamanor, near Chester Ca.I am glad you got out without much damage, but I want to know what lake in CA are you doing the shore camping AND the OHV stuff?
OK I have heard you could ride right out of camp at that lake but never followed up. I may have to hit you up later for details, this just moved up the list of to dos before I die!Lake Alamanor, near Chester Ca.
Kick ass place for sure. High elevation so it doesnt get that hot, Pine Trees everywhere Meaning lots of shade, great trout fishing, decent small mouth bass fishing, lots of OHV trails, and the town of Chester near by to get what you need.
The best thing about camping their, coming back from a nice ride, and literally jumping in the lake to wash the dirt off and crack a cold beer… aaaaaahhhhhhh ….
