When I was a kid my parents were divorced. My dad remarried and had more kids. He had a German Shepard that would protect my sibling similar to that.

When I got my Shepard and we would go camping, he would escort my wife to the bath house and wait outside the door for her. He would always listen to me except when she would go to the bath house. Never had to leash him either. All voice commands. He just knew where our campsite boundaries were. Damn I miss him.

Just thought of another time he would disobey me. After we got an rv and would bring it home from storage to load up. He would get in there, lay down and wouldn't come out. Would stay in there all night waiting to go. In his mind you weren't going camping without him.

As a kid we had a beagle mix that was like that.
We got “shorty” when she was almost a year old. She had been trained and was super super smart. I was 9 when we got her in Arkansas.
We moved to Alaska at that time.
I was 26 when dad had to finally put her down.
Shorty was like a person. You could tell her anything and she knew what you were saying.
As a teen in HS shorty slept in my room, as she got older she’d need to go out at night to potty so she would come over to my bed and paw her collar tags to wake me up and let her out.
No doggy doors in Alaska! Lol

But she would and did stand up to anything including bears in our campground to protect us.
When she was about 3 we were camping near portage glacier in Alaska and a black bear came around hunting trash. (Campground bear)
We all jumped in the camper and mom yelled “sick em shorty!” That dog went headfirst out of that camper and lit into that little black bear.
Last we saw was that bear hauling ass into the woods and Shorty right on its heels.
Dad was furious at mom. “Dammit Lynette that was the best dog I ever had!!”
No worries…shorty came jogging back a few minutes later all proud and cocky. Lol
She would die to protect any member of the family.
You could ask her where any family member was by name and she’d go to them and look at you like “wtf, they are sitting right here, are ya blind?”
She new the car from the truck by name, you could tell her wait by the car and she’d run out there by her car door. Same difference with the truck or camper. shit like that.

Some dogs are just connected like that.

Suzy (our old Puggle) was like that....as soon as she saw me getting the boat ready to hitch up....she was in the truck waiting. Actually, any time we walked towards the door with more than a keychain, she made damn sure she made it out the door before I did and in the truck before I did.

New Dog is stupid...he chases the shadow from the tennis ball but doesn't give 2 shits about the tennis ball. lol...he is a lot of fun though.

Tonka is my kids shadow. She is even super protective of strangers kids. Been a few times I've been wrestling around with them and I thought there was a chance she would give me a little bite.
