It's come to my attention that I am being viewed as a grammar bully. I've also been reminded that I hate bullies, and I am being the worst kind... a psychological bully.
In my mind a teacher is someone with knowledge that altruistically wants to share that with others. They mean well... and at least in their own head, they are doing their pupils and surroundings a favor by sharing it. Having Racey show us how he builds a part... having Dave show me why this feature on a drawing can't be machined, having someone like AZGeo explain some aspect of V-drive rigging, or Campbell Carl wax nostalgic about a particular boat hull that he remembers being built for a certain guy. Having SteveO drop knowledge about gear ratios, or Dave Sammons explain cav plates... all of it to me is very positive, and isn't in any way people telling people how to do something... but rather sharing how and why they do it that way. It's a very collaborative place here... and I have learned an awful lot.
The interesting thing is, many folks on here have decidedly poor grammar and vocabulary skills. But it is a written media. You may or may not realize the impact of this... but every single thing that we read goes toward painting a picture in vibrant colors about our impression of you as a person behind the screen name... from the screen name and avatar to the content of your posts. Everything goes toward creating that mosaic that we build in our minds of what you are like... what you sound like... what you do for a living... where you do it etc...
And it isn't superficial... it's the opposite. We have only your own posted content to judge by. But we are judging.
I represent a large group of people on here. A group that understands the value of proper grammar and vocabulary. So I'm gonna share what that means to you...
It means that if you misspell something, one of us is gonna see it. Not because we want to, or are looking to be criticle... but because we know better. We are reading it, and in doing so are by default proof-reading it to some degree. You have to understand that in order for this kind of shit to not matter... you have to make the assumption that nobody knows any better. That is not the case. And yes, I misspelled "critical" to prove a point. If you stumbled on it... you see what I mean.
I think that a teacher... (which in the abstract is merely someone who understands something better than a student and wishes to share that knowledge) that corrects a misspelling isn't a bully. I think that if you know someone is fucking up, you should let them know so they don't continue to do so. If you don't, you are part of the problem.
Enough people ignore failures... try to help fix them.
So here's my stance. Instead of being upset that you are being corrected... try being appreciative. It means that finally someone in your life gives a shit.
This is the written word. It is your choice to communicate with it. If you are more comfortable on the phone, or in person than so be it. But if you choose to participate, know that you are being judged every word, every letter, every picture. It is the only method we have to communicate on here... and so we are gonna fill in the blanks because we have to.
