It's come to my attention that I am being viewed as a grammar bully. I've also been reminded that I hate bullies, and I am being the worst kind... a psychological bully.

In my mind a teacher is someone with knowledge that altruistically wants to share that with others. They mean well... and at least in their own head, they are doing their pupils and surroundings a favor by sharing it. Having Racey show us how he builds a part... having Dave show me why this feature on a drawing can't be machined, having someone like AZGeo explain some aspect of V-drive rigging, or Campbell Carl wax nostalgic about a particular boat hull that he remembers being built for a certain guy. Having SteveO drop knowledge about gear ratios, or Dave Sammons explain cav plates... all of it to me is very positive, and isn't in any way people telling people how to do something... but rather sharing how and why they do it that way. It's a very collaborative place here... and I have learned an awful lot.

The interesting thing is, many folks on here have decidedly poor grammar and vocabulary skills. But it is a written media. You may or may not realize the impact of this... but every single thing that we read goes toward painting a picture in vibrant colors about our impression of you as a person behind the screen name... from the screen name and avatar to the content of your posts. Everything goes toward creating that mosaic that we build in our minds of what you are like... what you sound like... what you do for a living... where you do it etc...

And it isn't superficial... it's the opposite. We have only your own posted content to judge by. But we are judging.

I represent a large group of people on here. A group that understands the value of proper grammar and vocabulary. So I'm gonna share what that means to you...

It means that if you misspell something, one of us is gonna see it. Not because we want to, or are looking to be criticle... but because we know better. We are reading it, and in doing so are by default proof-reading it to some degree. You have to understand that in order for this kind of shit to not matter... you have to make the assumption that nobody knows any better. That is not the case. And yes, I misspelled "critical" to prove a point. If you stumbled on it... you see what I mean.

I think that a teacher... (which in the abstract is merely someone who understands something better than a student and wishes to share that knowledge) that corrects a misspelling isn't a bully. I think that if you know someone is fucking up, you should let them know so they don't continue to do so. If you don't, you are part of the problem.

Enough people ignore failures... try to help fix them.

So here's my stance. Instead of being upset that you are being corrected... try being appreciative. It means that finally someone in your life gives a shit.

This is the written word. It is your choice to communicate with it. If you are more comfortable on the phone, or in person than so be it. But if you choose to participate, know that you are being judged every word, every letter, every picture. It is the only method we have to communicate on here... and so we are gonna fill in the blanks because we have to.

My least favorite aspect of boating are the hecklers at Site Six... of which I know there are some on here. If you want to sit up on the bank and make things worse by heckling and picking on boating newbies or drunks... you are part of the problem.

If you want to help them get those boats more safely on the trailer, to move the crowd faster or to ease their experience.... then you are a teacher.

Try to be the latter.

Nobody likes a know it all, what you have to say gets lost most of the time in a presentation of arrogance and self imposed authority. At the rate this is going it's just gonna be you on here correcting yourself, I think you make people feel bad and they stop participating in what was a fun place to converse topics. Lighten up Francis:p

But we are judging.

I represent a large group of people on here.

While I appreciate the intent of the post, I think you qualified it incorrectly with those 2 sentences.

I'm not necessarily sure that a lot of people are judging, or that the grammer nazis represent a large group, but rather a small minority that are better equated to terrorist cells, then the general populace.

Wes, I like to think of your stance on spelling and grammar as a teaching tool. At least it has been for me. You've instilled a desire in me to become a better writer and thought purveyor both here at RDP as well as other sites.

Early on, I felt hurt and even betrayed by your corrections and/or call outs.....not any longer.

Perhaps it has to do with face to face meetings (Dave's place in Carlsbad and then in Needles) that helps one understand that you aren't motivated by hate or disdain, rather your desire to make US better at the written word.

Bully is a little harsh........how about Mentor?

Maybe we can have FS proof read the post, before it is posted. :p

I see Wes' point of view here, but I don't think it will make a difference. We will continue to see misspelling and grammar errors.

It's not my intention to impress you or anyone else on this forum with proper use of the English language. Point in fact I find some amusement in fucking with your OCD grammar twitch LOL. The point is you make people feel like shit, and as a proponent of anti bullying you are being a total hypocrite and losing any credibility on that front. I don't expect you to acknowledge your wrong, personally I'm not even sure that being wrong is an option in your mind. Maybe show a little empathy and humility instead of calling people illiterates, it's not very becoming.

Mentors have a more delicate and positive delivery.

Personally I think you look like a total cock bag talking down to people about grammar and everytime you do it I lose some respect for you. We are a melting pot of culture, race, wealth and education here and I’m sure your brash attitude turned off a lot of possible customers back in your boat building days.

You come across as a know it all in almost all aspect's regardless of the experience you bring to the table. There is no doubt in my mind you are knowledgeable and bring alot to the forums but you can be a real dick.

Obviously you could care less about how I view your online persona. Honestly I could care less about how you or someone else on an internet forum views me based on my post's or lack of punctuation or grammar skills.

I'm here for the knowledge, relationships and entertainment......Everything else is trivial Bullshit

BTW...You're probably just fishing but this thread is the perfect example of you being a dick head and then justifying that behavior by telling people youare helping them out with their life...

RD

A) It's "grammar", "Nazi" and "than"
B) You don't think it's a large group because you aren't part of it. You don't recognize that it was misspelled, or that Nazi wasn't capitalized or that you used "then" instead of "than". So of course you don't recognize how badly this post is deflated or how strongly my point is made.

All you have to understand is that everyone on here that knows the difference between "grammar and grammer", a proper noun, or "then and than" knows that you don't. That is the important part.

You can fix this. You now know... right this second that you have been misspelling grammar. Your choice whether or not you do it again. You now know that Nazi is to be capitalized because it is a proper noun, and that the use of "then" is to describe subsequent action... not comparative. It is up to you whether you want to make those mistakes again.

If you do... I'm gonna clown you for it then too.

Not a phrase. Misused all the time. It is "point of fact" you are looking for.

Who's wrong? I told you three posts ago that you were fucking up "your". I had you sigged for weeks because of it. You are leaving me with only two potential explanations... First the empathetic and sympathetic response...

1) You literally don't understand how it is supposed to be used. No problem... check this out. http://www.wikihow.com/Use-You're-and-Your In ten minutes... you will likely never make that mistake again.

2) You don't care that you are fucking it up. That has greater consequences. You are then choosing to look illiterate for the rest of your life as it relates to that pair of words, and it will essentially nullify your arguments.

Your choice. Again...this should be the last time we see this problem from you if you care even the slightest about using the words correctly.

Ok Bouy, give me an honest "judgement" of me being that I make grammah mistakes in nearly everything written. :D An honest one.. Do you look down on me? Do I seem uneducated? Do I seem superfluous?

I have to point out something hilarious, because when you point fingers at others you damn well better make sure you don't make the same mistakes. A small spelling mistake here or there happens to the best of us, especially when using Tapatalk. However, the "Grammar Nazi" has had me laughing with his abundant use of an incorrect ellipsis.

Yes those the little dots scattered throughout his posts. It would do him well to Google "How to use an ellipsis". A proper pause in would be much better accomplished by a comma or semi-colon. Perhaps a period and the starting of a new sentence. An occasional ellipsis used as a pause for effect might be acceptable but such abundant use as we are seeing from this particular poster is detracting from an otherwise well written tirade.

Where does the "knowledge" part stop Brandin? Does it stop at the knowledge of the written word, or of tax code? At what point does imparting knowledge cross your line?

How is it OK to explain how to set up a V-Drive coupler, but not OK to explain how to use a contraction... something you are far more likely to encounter?

I use it all the time to provide a more conversational tone... It is a "verbal" pause to me, as I don't view online posts as prose.

I learned it from reading Herb Caen... one of the great newspaper columnists of all time. I like the trick, and believe that it is additive to my posts. You will also find that use of the ellipsis has increased hugely in recent years because of this... and I firmly expect it to become a functional and accepted part of proper punctuation in the next couple of years.

Mostly because one day I may build a V-Drive or want to tighten up my tax deductions.

Simple.
A poster ASKS about setting up the coupler....
Need I go on?

Like I said way back when, WHY would I listen to all that BS (browbeating) when a dozen other SUCCESSFUL experts will spare me the pain?

So in an essence it's ok for you to fuck up punctuation. More to the point, or point in fact, or was it point of fact, because you incorrectly use it, it is acceptable, and now more people have begun to use it making a huge increase, and it, in your opinion, will be an accepted part of punctuation? (I'm trying to get another comma in there somewhere)

Isn't that a bit... narcissistic?

In several sentences here you used a series of dots to merge the conjunction. Also, you began a new sentence beginning with the word "but" (which is the conjunction in question). In the future, please divide conjunctive sentences a comma.

Just sayin.

Ok Bouy, give me an honest "judgement" of me being that I make grammah mistakes in nearly everything written. :D An honest one.. Do you look down on me? Do I seem uneducated? Do I seem superfluous?

You didn't ask me but every time you use 'orientated' (and you have shown it to me in some on-line dictionary)....you get a PM from me and yes, I think it makes you and the site look ignorant for the use of the word.

Mostly because one day I may build a V-Drive or want to tighten up my tax deductions.

I will never become an English Teacher.

Your choice homie. Choose what advice to take, and what not to.

I didn't ask anyone how to set up my coupler... That information was imparted upon me as something to check and look out for. By several people. Racey told me a neat trick for expanding your coupling until it barely slipped and making sure it was dead square. Carl told me how bad the boat would work if it wasn't square, and Steve told me how important it was to the health of the box, and how dangerous it was if it wasn't correct.

I didn't ask. But I sure as fuck paid attention because everyone above knows more about it than I do... and I am just gonna assume that it is good advice, makes sense and I am going to follow that path.

If you don't think that grammar advice is good, sound or important... fine. But you don't have to be an English teacher for it to be important... all you have to be is an English user.

I don't pay a lot of attention to threads about tunnel tabs these days. Not an issue. There could be a huge wealth of knowledge out there that I am missing out on, but it isn't important to me, and I don't click on the threads.

Keep in mind... you are currently so uninterested in grammar as it relates to a boating forum that you have berated me and insulted me in a grammar specific thread, started by me. Think about that shit.

Clearly...

You forgot #3

3) We do it to watch you freak out.

(I won today's pool, BTW, thanks!)

It is not a couple years from now though and it is detracting. Just because something is commonplace doesn't mean that it is correct. It is entirely too commonplace to spell incorrectly and use improper punctuation (other than the ellipsis of discussion here) but it doesn't make it correct.

Because you called me out and asked,
I think you write well, your articles are good, informative, and fun. But, just like a newspaper, you could use an editor/proofreader. Not that what you put out is terrible, but to take it to the next level.
Just my opinion.

So I'm not in business? I'm not gainfully employed?

Not to rehash burns of recent past Phil... but you couldn't hurt my feelings with a deer rifle. You sell hubcaps.

I specifically asked about your boat business and my intentions are not to hurt feelings.

And yes I sell hubcaps, wheels, center caps, wheel repair and wheel re-chroming, we have nearly 40 Hub Cap Annie's nationwide, started in 1975 in Memphis, TN. I've been in business since 1997 at my same location.

So again I'll ask, what happened to your boat company? How long did it last? I mean big deal you tried to build a boat and apparently failed, considering just about anyone can and has made boat building their weekend hobby it's weird that you failed.
