I will start this off with I LOVE TO DRIVE!

My 2011 Silverado 1500 hit 300,000 miles (chassis) Friday the 14th and the 2nd motor (160k miles) let go on Father’s Day.

Anyways, I flew up to Twin Falls yesterday and bought a new truck from a good buddy I met back in college.

2024 GMC Ultimate 1500 3.0 Duramax with Super Cruise. Truck is loaded to the gills with options including super cruise which is why I bought this model.

I feel like I haven’t really heard much about the super cruise option, only seeing the black guy on the commercials clapping his hands while pulling a trailer driving down the highway.

This feature is insane. I splurged to get this option because I drive so much for work and I am very impressed.

For you road warriors like me, I highly recommend you look into a similar option for your next vehicle. If you don’t really drive much I wouldn’t waste the money.

Not the best video but the truck is driving itself around a corner going 75 with no input from me. If following someone, it will come to a complete stop, continue back up to the desired speed as well as pass people on the highway (if you want).

It’s incredible.

You lost 2 engines in 150Kish miles each and bought another from the same brand?

I bet this one will be even more dependable since they improved things by putting a wet gilmer belt in the back of the engine to drive the oil pump.

100,000 mile warranty. We’ll find out!

Was debating on a new tundra but they are having major engine recalls. Toyota dealers arent event accepting them back on trade ins. I like the new f150 but they’re fucking ugly. I would buy a raptor if it would fit in my work parking garages but it won’t. 2500 is also out of the question due to the height…

This 3.0 diesel gets 27mpg, 600 miles to a tank and drives itself. Sold!

Thanks! I was way overdue but the truck upgrade kept getting delayed- bought a stoker, house, full remodel, wedding, all within a 3 year span. New truck has been on the list for a while but unfortunately at the bottom. 😂
How is the 3.0 diesl? I would resist buying that small of an engine.

Our BMW X5E has similar, but it has to inform you that the roadway that you are on is available. is the GMC GM the same?

They didnt have the full super cruise available yet on the HD trucks yet when we got the 24, but I have to say the adaptive cruise control is pretty badass also.

I picked up my parents at Ontario airport a few months ago and set the adaptive cruise at 75 when we got on the freeway, didn't touch the gas or the brakes until we got off the freeway in Hesperia an hour later. That was with a bunch of stop-and-go traffic multiple times on 2 freeways.

Super Cruise. . . . . .

Be ready to pay Blonde Star for the rest of your life for that option.

Its really, really nice but it don't work without an OnStar subscription. And, it don't work worth a hoot on 2 lane country roads where GM has not mapped. Or roads with lousy stripes (Colorado where all the painted stripes are torn off in the winter)

And, you need to continue to pay Blonde Star for just the basic connection.

But, it's really, really nice if you you like paying a monthly bill . . . . . . FOREVER.

The 24 hours that I have owned it has been amazing. It has the strong low end torque that just keeps pulling like the 2500 duramax with a lot less excitement. It’s still very strong. I won’t be towing anything crazy, mostly a 20’ stoker or a couple dirtbikes.

Yes it is. Took some 2 lane backroads from twin falls Idaho to mammoth mountain today to watch my nephews race. About 50% were available for super cruise.

It’s free for 3 years then it’s $25/month. That’s $300/year for a self driving truck that goes 600 miles on a tank. Gotta pay to play for anything these days it seems.

Some cars brands make you pay monthly for remote start and heated seats which seems super gay.

But yes, some roads do not work. If it’s not programmed and If the road lines aren’t visible it’s not going to gamble which I guess is reassuring.

I drove some pretty remote 2 lane roads today from Twin Falls to Mammoth. I was surprised how many 2 lane roads it worked on.

We had a ‘24 Yukon Denali with super cruise. HAD. Turned it back in 6 months after we got it. To many damn safety features that drove my wife nuts. It’s beyond overkill now. We should have kept the ‘21. Super cruise was nice, not perfect but certainly made road trips better.

Dropped 10k to get rid of it. That’s how much we disliked it.

It's freaking awesome man. It may be small but it pulls hard. Plenty of get up to make a pass and pulls better than any of the V8 gasser we have had.
Is yours getting better mileage as time goes on? and how about oil consumption?

Nice truck!😎👍
I simply can not give up my need to be in control of my vehicle, period.
After nearly 40 yrs in the car biz and easily a million miles sitting on my butt behind the wheel Ive avoided multiple accidents with proactive decisions.
I feel I'm still 100x more intuitive of my surroundings & other drivers than a handful of sensors while on the road.
I'm not against autonomous cars, they will have their purpose, but it just won't be me browsing YouTube on I-40(etc) while taking a nap(e) in the left front seat.

kind of surprised you only got 150k miles out of that engine.

I had 2 work trucks with the 6.0 go over 300 easily my last one was at 325k and was still strong and no check engine light ever. New trucks are nice but for me too many electronic features i dont care for and the emissions really can harm them these days.time will tell how it last

May I ask what safety features bothered her?
Automatic rear braking was the big one. You can turn it off but have to each time you start it. We could back out of our garage without it hitting the brakes. Super annoying.

The first one was running fine but had the lifter issue due to the 4 cylinder mode. It ticked so loud it sounded like a Cummins.

Second motor I ran the 4 cylinder deactivation plug so it wouldnt have the lifter issue. It never did, but it just completely grenaded at the river idling, just when we’re about to head home. lol

Don’t hesitate. That motor is awesome. I’ll be buying my third 3.0 very soon. Went to an 3/4 ton truck and going back to half ton now.
What is the rear end axel ratio?

Makes sense hear a lot of bad on those. I wouldn’t trust them either ones I know who have them have replaced the lifters and deactivated the afm.

Devils advocate -

Imagine rewinding the clock 50 years, and complaining that you only got 160k out of a motor / trans :p

The Ford Coyote V8 and 2.7 ecoboost offerings are the same deal - wet belt driving the oil pump. They're at the front of the motor, but due to the DOHC (and turbos on the ecoboost) I think the labor hours to swap it are higher than dropping the trans to service on the GM.
Either way - retarded! But i think they upped the rating on the '24 trucks to 200k for that belt

Joe, did you get the truck or SUV? Just curious how this 3.0 would pull over the mountains...

Don’t those need to come apart for cam phasers or some such at about 80K typically?

Can’t speak for Joe but I’ve had a 1500 Denali truck and also my wife has a Yukon. Both have pulled out trifecta with ease. Braking would be an issue way before power.

When did driving become an onerous task?

It’s not. But I drive a lot for work. I cover 50 bankers from LA to San Diego and spend at minimum 2.5 hours a day in my truck, driving to meetings. Last Tuesday I was in my car for 6 hours.

Having a computer take such a brainless activity off my plate is a win for me.

That is correct. New gen 3.0 engines have 200k service life on that belt. I believe its ‘23 and ‘24.
