Has anyone here ever had one of these engines fail?

There’s a few threads already on this topic.

I had my 6.2 lock up twice due to lifter failure. Luckily under warranty.

How many miles? Did they replace it or or build it both times? What year truck?

Did you have any type of cylinder-shutoff disabler installed?

Ya disabled AFM at 40k (Superchips tuner). Locked up at 83k miles. Out of warranty. Looks like I'll be putting a new factory crate in it, I just don't want it to happen again, wondering if I should look into the aftermarket.

What year was your truck?

2017

Accelerating from the stop light, loss in power, felt like I was pulling a heavy trailer, grinding sound, thought it was torque converter letting go, let off the throttle and it locked up.

Disabling the afm doesn't fix the issue. Gm lifters sux, especially covid Era built vehicles.

Gotta swap the whole motor to non AFM cam and lifters. And use Johnson lifters.

Sir - I must disagree....

If disabled at low mileage, It generally helps with keeping the problem at bay, as it's not activating the AFM and collapsing / re-engaging the lifters constantly, which is what wears them out and eventually causes them to fail. Lots of AFM disabled trucks on the road past 150k.

Disabeling AFM also helps save the 6L80 torque converter, as the computer commands it to "slip" every time the AFM engages / disengages, and also commands it to slip slightly when locked up the entire time the truck is in AFM to minimize harmonics while running in constant 4cyl mode. That is the #1 cause of 6L80 converter failure - premature wear of the lockup clutch, which ends up eating the converter and sending metal thru the trans - initiating the death cycle.

If the AFM stays on, and the converter fails - Then you have to go see this guy.....

Did it seize up? If so, it doesn't sound like an AFM lifter failure, sounds like something in the rotating assembly let go, or it possibly dropped a valve.
There does seem to be quite a few instances of L86 6.2 "lock ups", my friend's 2022 trail boss silverado shit the bed at 2,000 miles, randomly while cruising on the freeway. Entire motor trashed. Dealer hasn't told him yet what the failure cause was.

Was talking my neighbor about this I told him they have the plug in deals he said they don’t do shit need to swap lifters and cam. The lifters fail regardless of ecu mods he said. He was in market for new truck and this scared him and he was a former mechanic

Yea it sounds like rotating assembly. I would think it would start burning oil and making chatter if it was lifter failure, but it did none of that. They have not torn it apart yet.

I am thinking since I plan on tuning the AFM out again to go aftermarket on the valvetrain. Shop says they can get me a new crate or rebuilt, but I just don't want the same parts that fail. Other than building custom, I don't know what my options are.

I really love my truck and hope to get many more years out of it so I want to put it back together the best way I can.

GM is stupid. This is basic shit that that hasn't been new since the '60s, and they can't get it right. I remember the steering shaft slip yoke campaign in about 2000....how many fucking years have they been making slipyokes? Now they can't keep lifters together?

New cars are trash. Toyota has had cams banging on solid lifters for 30 years and they work fine, and don't even need adjusting for 300K miles. Why is this basic shit such a problem for GM (and Chrysler)?

Looks like I'll be putting a new factory crate in it,

$10,500 at the dealer for a new engine

aftermarket you could do it between 6-7 Per my buddy who just went with the dealer package for the warranty

Gone are the days of building your own and putting that in.

Anyone ever try smogging an CA Ultra Low Emissions Marine engine? I’d be curious what would happen if you put a catalytic converter on a TCM EFI engine and see what it’s output is and if it would pass a smog check.

If I did a crate motor I’d have a reputable engine shop clean it up and throw a few upgrades at it to make it live longer.

I did get to work on a severely neglected Toyota with multiple issues this week, not sure how much longer it will be running, but it's still running nonetheless.

The lifter failure is from that stupid screen in the oil pressure sender. That clogs and starves the lifters too.

My 1st non dod lifters failed because the cam was turning into a vtec cam and grinding its own profile. Then I sent it to the moon getting on the freeway one day.

2nd ls7 lifter set sized for no reason.

Random Lifter/pushrod failures and related issues are common on these engines , We look at them almost weekly for my mechanical damage inspection business I believe the lifters themselves are at the heart of it , Often these motors are clean and well maintained , no overheat or lack of lube situations . misfire codes, "jiggle" and "ticking" seem to precursors

On this day in 2008, a week after Senate Republicans killed a Democratic-sponsored bailout bill, asserting it failed to impose sufficient wage cuts on autoworkers, President George W. Bush announced a $17.4 billion bailout to General Motors and Chrysler, of which $13.4 billion would be extended immediately.

And then...

I'd like a refund of MY portion of 11 BILLION DOLLARS LOSS please.

In my best Jeff Spicoli voice...

Well, you know. 😉

I'm kind of torn... On one hand I'd like to build aftermarket and ditch the problematic parts, but on the other hand, I'd like to put a new GM motor in it and have some kind of warranty from the dealer/ mfg and I think it's better for resale.

I've had all three brands, gassers and diesels and this is by far my favorite all around truck. I plan on keeping it a long time. Played w/ the idea of taking the loss and buying a new GM product, but I like mine better than the new ones and I can't justify the prices.

Daily driving a Rubicon on 40s right now and she's thirsty. Can't wait to have my truck back LOL!

Since I have no such skills, now I need to figure out how much to un-AFM/DOD the 5.3s in our Silverado and Suburban and see if it’s worth the peace of mind.

In addition to the torque converter Im about to swap on the Suburban (already did the Silverado) since it just turned 90k and I know it’s when, not if…

I spent 25 years working with Toyota and Lexus carmakers in various capacities yet somehow I have two fucking Chevies in my driveway 😕

Highly doubtful.

But if you have the facts to back that up?

🤔
Ask Pat Purcell. He was selling ford's then and still is. He swore the 6.0 was the next best thing. And not to buy a 7.3 but wait for the new 6.0 to come in. Could of had a 03 7.3 still. Would be worth what it was new. Then the owner of South Bay Ford Gary told my buddy who was his friend. The 07 6.0 have all the bugs worked out. Bought a 07 and it was a bigger pile of shit. Ford could give 2 fucks about there customers.

"Customers service" is basically non existent from Any American car manufacturer.

And even today, that craziness still hasn't changed.

I worked for Ford/Lincoln-Mercury for eleven years. I'm well aware of how they treat their customers.

It truly is pathetic, compared to Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and even Toyota. There really is no reason for it.

My Buddies 2021 Trail Boss with 5.3 went through a set of lifters and they replaced them rather quickly.

Couple months go buy and they went out again.

He made a big stink and they replaced the whole engine the second time.

had a lifter go out on one of my work trucks last month, 2015 6.0 with 95k. Had our mechanic pull the motor and sent to JMS to be rebuilt. close to 10k to get back into service. This is the first failure we have had with the 6.0 out of 6 - 6.0L trucks with over 100k. Engine never seized just had a scraping sound, sounded like a pulley issue.

Rebuild was a little over 4k including cam lifters, rest is in the R&R including new mounts, hoses, water pump and bunch other stuff while the engine is out. thats 2k less than dealer and mechanic quotes with factory remanufactured or one of the jasper engines. GM and Jasper we’re over 6k retail for rebuilt unknown history engine.

IIRC, the 6.0 doesn't have the AFM/DOD, so it has all "normal" lifters, not 1/2 of them hokey lifters like the 5.3 & 6.2 engines. But I guess in occasion they apparently still fail

I called over there. They’re not in production
I wonder why not ? It would be the same rebuild, but with a late model 6.6 Cam, a normal set of lifters with the appropriate "buckets" that hold them straight. No other differences. Could it be they don't have the tuner device available ? If so, they could still build you an engine, and you could have a local tuner modify your ECM, or, send the ECM to Texas Speed, and they'll modify it for $400.00 IIRC.
