So I’m trying to remove my bad gimbal bearing from my bravo one. Have the removal tool, tried to pull out and broke the bearing. All that is remaining is the outer ring and ball race?? Can’t get my 3 jaw slide hammer to budge this thing at all The boat is a 99 and just saw online that earlier bravos can possibly have a snap ring I can’t see a snap ring but damn this thing isn’t moving. Anyone have any tips? Heat? Drilling holes in outer race?

Got a mig?
Had to pull one a couple weeks ago on a wheel bearing.

If you can hook the back side with a slide hammer, it'll come out pretty easy after you shrink it with a bead...even an ugly, blind, popcorn "bead".

The race is aluminum @monkeyswrench

Ive only ever had 2 do this to me and its probably been 8 years since my last one. I do know I had to completely remove the bell housing and I may or may not have pulled the gimbal ring too. I then drill relief holes in the race in a couple places and crack it out with a set of chisels and drifts. Its very delicate and time consuming work. Be very careful, a slip or drill in the wrong spot and thats an engine out and new transom assembly. Good Luck

Hacksaw blade by hand. Take it down nice and easy with three relief cuts about a quarter inch apart. Ya don’t need to go all the way to the housing…just about three quarters of the way through…then tap a small flathead in the center cut. Should be able to work it out then. Take your time…don’t be a hacker with a hammer be a surgeon.

Is there a clear relief anywhere behind it, or is it a relative blind? It being aluminum is a plus, at least in terms of working one the piece itself...but since it's housed in aluminum you'd have to be really patient.

A couple years ago I had a fight with a pilot bearing. It came out in pieces, leaving the hardened outer shell somehow fused in the crankshaft. Being a complete blind hole, I ended up carving 2 reliefs opposite each other with a Dremel tool. A couple of sharp taps with a smaller ball peen, and a damn hard chisel, and it cracked in two. Pulling the crank to take it to the machine shop was not an option:oops:

Thanks for the reply’s. This is what I get for thinking it would be easy like the last one I did many moons ago.
Isn’t it amazing. it looks to be a job , at the start . that should be hard , but not impossible. Turns into sitting down staring at it.
And trying to find the meaning of life. .

Good luck

That ridge/lip can be very deceiving...Ive made the mistake of grabbing it with the gimbal tool multiple times...dont cut into it!

I win! I feel like I got hit by a bus from sliding the damn slide hammer so much but she is out and new one installed and aligned.
Nice! That looks like it was a Mullapucker!
