Anyone elses utility gas bill sky rocket?

Our gas utility bill tripled during the last billing cycle, I thought I missed a payment. Looks like this is the talk of the town on Nextdoor, but still not totally clear what's driving the rate increase. Some people mentioned Newsom is behind it- I wouldn't be surprised if that idiot passed a new bill of some sort to move away from gas appliances and use electricity with our stable eclectic grid. I figured we all have to help pay the 1.8 Billion in settlement money for the Aliso Canyon peeps. WTF??

I received a letter months ago about tier plan changes. Said something about having an option to keep current tier, but I had to sign up for my plan to stay the same or it would go up automatically. I filled out the form and mailed it back; Bill is about the same. You may want to login and look to see if they changed your tier.

Natty Gas prices have tripled from lows earlier this year. They have retreated in the last month, but will remain higher than historical prices through this winter.

Hey Neighbor, mine was actually about a hundred bucks more than normal. But I've been using the heating since it's been so cold in our area. I think my bill was like $110... Is yours more than that?

Ours was over $300, In all the years I have been in this house it’s never been that high. Fucking crazy

I lit a fire in the fireplace almost every morning and set the thermostat at 65 at night and my was a third that. Even though you have a bigger two story that seems high if you ask me. Hmmm..

Problem is natural gas prices rose because everyone was more dependent on it due to a colder winter and less production of alternative energies like solar and turbine. Hoover dam can’t produce because there’s zero water flowing… so we rely on gas as an energy to keep warm. Also here in California SCE has switched to “time of use” pricing models which means even when we try to get away from fossil fuel energy we get fvcked in the ass with price gouging when demand is usually higher during the day from sources that refuse to improve their infrastructure to support pushes towards “renewable energies.”

This makes no sense at all. How would solar and wind power lower gas bills? And why was production of renewables lower? Do you mean to say the weather affects their production? No kidding. Welcome to logic.

How will "renewable energies" lower your gas bill?

Natural gas prices have increased substantially in the last 24 months. Most of it is due to decreased production of fracked natural gas. Many small operators shut down when oil prices collapsed.

For those of you in California that have been sold a bill of goods about renewables, consider Germany. Merkel ordered the shutdown of all German nuclear plants and handcuffed the dozens of brown lignite powerplants in response to the Fukushima disaster. She was afraid that the voters would defect to the Greens Party because of it, so she politicized energy to stay in power.

Now Germans are paying five times the average EU price for electricity and natural gas.

That's your future. My gas bill has doubled, but the state government isn't involved in dictating what my choices will be.

solar, hydro, and wind will be depended on going forward over nat gas. is the current infrastructure we have in place good enough? obviously not... we cant even keep the lights on. but hey the blue's plan is maybe if you toss enough gas onto the fire... heh.

I have PG&E for gas only. I noticed a out couple weeks ago that came out and put a remote meter reading device on my has meter (pictured below). I haven't had a chance to call them yet, but I assume it is for time of use billing.

I agree that time of use, and availability of renewables, has absolutely nothing to do with gas. Absolute bullshit.

That's great. You must look forward to replacing your HVAC with a heat pump, and paying 70¢/kWh to heat your water.

Go back at least three or four billing cycles and check usage and rate. We have found a water leak under the slab and a gas leak outside under cement by our usage increasing each month.
Both pin hole leaks getting worse thus the usage increases.

Hold on to your shorts, this may fluctuate down for a moment, but be prepared for even higher prices coming with the little bit that bidumb has already done to the American people. Were still living off of "President Trumps" economy. Wait till next fall when we will probably be completely away from his economics and dealing with bidumb and his administration. Hopefully midterms can turn the house and senate significantly republican to block some of this nonsense.

I know we are not talking apples to apples, but our Nat gas bill last month was
Payment Amount: $20.10
(shown as "PNS*WEST TENNESSEE UTIL" on your statement and includes a $2.50 Pay N Seconds Convenience Fee)

1600 sqft house, Temp set at 55 as we are not there. Last bill I can find from early last year was January's bill. It was $39, so not seeing a big jump in price for nat gas.

Just for fun, California is not allowing new NG installations in commercial or residential buildings in some areas.

Natural gas price is a free market. In the power industry we would buy natural gas a contracted price for years out to protect us from market swings. Natural gas has been very low over the years.

Knowing that we were going to get solar, last winter we installed a new heat pump and retired the 28 year old gas furnace. So far, glad we did. We also have AC for the first time in 28 years at the San Clemente house.

Payback for the solar system is on track for 5.7 years, although that should go down once figuring in the extra savings over nat gas.

Our bill on average is $28 per month but last month it jumped to $96. We’re like WTF? We have a gas stove & water heater, and rarely use the furnace unless the outside temps dip below 40F. (We did not use it even one time last month). I’m about ready to move off grid. This inflation these days is going to kill the economy!!! #FJB / Let’s Go Brandon

Standby... We should know in 2 weeks what is going to happen to NEM! I am on NEM 1.0 and they want to knock off 5 years of my 20 year contract.

The CPUC has now issued a proposal that would revise current NEM rules and create a Net Billing Tariff. The proposal will be on the CPUC’s 27 January 2022 Voting Meeting agenda.

The new proposal, formally called a Proposed Decision, determines that NEM must be modernized to incentivize customers to install storage paired with rooftop solar to help California meet its net peak shortfall and ensure grid reliability.

The proposed new Net Billing Tariff has four key components:

  1. Pays Net Billing customers for the electricity they export to the grid based on its value, determined by the avoided cost to the utility of buying clean energy elsewhere.
  2. Charges Net Billing customers for the electricity they receive from the grid based on high differential time-of-use tariffs, creating more benefit for customers who install storage and incentivizing them to store solar energy and shift exports later in the day.
  3. Creates a Grid Participation Charge based on the size of the solar system to ensure that Net Billing customers are paying the same fixed costs of the electric grid as non-Net Billing customers.
  4. Provides a Market Transition Credit so that customers can pay back the cost of a new solar plus storage energy system in less than 10 years, ensuring that the solar industry in California continues to grow and rooftop solar remains economic. The credit will phase out for new customers over four years.
The proposal also creates an Equity Fund with up to $600 million to improve low-income customer access to distributed clean energy programs.

It was around 2.000 for a long time, thanks to Texas fracking. That's the same industry that Biden and the left are trying to destroy.

Guess what will happen if they succeed. There's already a preview in.progress.

In the early 2000 time frame natural gas went above $10 and then back down To record lows. They even had to shut down 100s of wells because there was no place to store the gas. I have spent some time on gas trading floors and is all market driven. These traders are sharp and get paid by their daily profits. Markets are all driven by supply and demand. Who ever thought people would be paying above MSRP on a RV!

This.
And it's funny how, on FJB's first day of office he canceled a pipeline.
We've got more than enough gas to power North America for the next 100 years .... and we'll store it for you too.

This is what everyone needs to be looking at. Some peeps don't realize that they use alot more gas in the Winter...lol. Check your THERM usage peeps. Was there a spike?

No. There was a spike in price. I used less than a year ago and the price was about double.

Peep post #34. His price per therm didn't double to $3 plus per therm....it jumped 30ish cents. Nowhere near double.. That's a feasible rate increase...a little high imo, but feasible...haven't looked at the details of mine. Mine was higher cuz it showed I jumped up in usage. Might be questionable. I don't feel like I used more than normal. I need to start reading my own meter every month and checking their shit....lol

Natural gas is traded just like grain. In the power industry we had very sharp people buying, selling and putting hedges on our fuel exposures in the market

Yuuup...so I peeped mine....rate increase was 6%..... but a commodity or transmission fee can fluctuate with market changes. So naturally, just like everything else.....things are going up. 😂😂
When will the torture stop...lol. When will our wages follow cost of living or all the other increases? NEVER.....fuck the world my friends. 😂😂
