Just curios, lets say you have a 1500HP engine at full throttle how much fuel would it burn per hour?

I don't know the math involved, but it all has to do with the BTU's created. From past experience and not math, around 90 gallons per hour. In the old days it was common to use 90 gallons per hour in the Parker enduro with a blown or turbo engine.

A Merc 500 EFI they say will burn about 64 GPH at Wot. A pair of them isnt much fun to feed wallet wise.
I cant imagine something with 3 times the HP :skull

I have read that a top fuel dragster uses more fuel than a 747 to go the same distance...And the fueler only turns about 400 revolutions in a 1/4 mile pass....

I'd guess about 12 GPH at WOT but it would vary with temperature and barometric pressure.

By the way, some cite 1 GPH per 10 hp is about the maximum achievable efficiency with gas. That would point toward 150 GPH for 1500 hp.

Soupersonic has some quality real world data. If it takes 64 GPH for 500 hp, you'd be looking at 192 GPH for 1500 hp with an engine of triple power and identical efficiency.

... but I'm sticking with my 12 GPH position. :D

Roughly a gallon a minute skiing @ 80, so 90 gal an hour flat out is realistic.

Mr. Brown's estimate of 1 GPH for every 10 HP at WOT is a good base point. If you have a 525 EFI, theoretically it would burn approximately 52.5 gallons of fuel at constant WOT under a full load. It's also good to know that an engine (i.e. 525 HP) would consume approximately the same amount of fuel at WOT whether it was carbureted or fuel injected (assuming both were optimally tuned). The fuel savings for a fuel injected engine (compared to a cabureted engine) occurs at throttle settings less than WOT, during acceleration and at idle speeds.

a forced induction engine needs about .6 lbs of gasoline per hour per hp. gasoline weighs about 6.2 lbs per gallon and we want to make 1500HP.

1500 x .60 = 900lbs per hour (fuel flow in weight)

900/6.2=145GPH

So my guess is 145 GPH.

Just my guess...Anyone else?

I was told mine gets about 3.6 gallon per minute :swear

216 gallons per hour, ouch but getting close to the numbers I was guessing in my head.

what HP is that thing putting out?

If I'm not mistaken James told me his 1450's are 123 gallons per hour WOT. (sterling dyno)

x2 @ $14.00 per gallon on a poker run such as SCOPE = A LOT OF MONEY!

I believe Jay used to burn up 300+ gallons just to catalina and back. Roughly 40minutes round trip with 1450's.

They guy in the slip next to me has a 65ft Hatteras. Took it for a spin up the river at 5.6 gallons per minute. Ran for 40min at 27knts. Here is a picture coming into the fuel dock. Rick, the fuel guy, held up his fucking welcome sign. Two v10s 4 turbos and 10" exhaust. I'd do it again.:D

to accurately know the answer to this, all you need to know is total engine power output, and a term known as BSFC.

Brake Specific Fuel Consumption is a measurment of how efficiently an engine converts to mechanical energy from the fuel it consumes.

this "levels the playing field" for any tyoe of four stroke engine.

for example, normally spirated carb engines have a BSFC of .5

if it made 500hp with BSFC of .5

500*.5 = 250lbs/hr of fuel

a supercharged engine has a BSFC of about .65

so a 1500hp engine consumes 975lbs of fuel per hour

975lbs/6= 162 gallons per hour

162*7.00$= $1,137.50 per hour at full output.

better find some slower skiers

to find BSFC for a custom engine (assuming it is in good tune and working order) you need a dyno.
