Looking to fully repaint a 95 Chebby extra cab Silverado with minor body work. Does anyone have recommendations on painters in the SoCal area (preferably) that are willing to take on a job? I’d even consider NorCal and AZ/NV if need be.

Not looking for show quality nor an Earl Scheib job. I know it won’t be cheap. This is the classic “you get what you pay for” job and I’m willing to pay the price for something decently nice.

Jerry at After Hours in Newhall will do full paint jobs, he’s not cheap but his paint jobs are much better than factory. I have four other friends who own collision centers that won’t touch that type of work for any price.

Talk to Grady Garrison in Corona. Smooth running shop and honest people who want to see you happy.

Simon’s Auto Body in Laguna Hills

Alternatively, if you or have a shop do the prep and bodywork, then remove all the trim yourself, you can actually get a decent job out of Maaco etc.

Something to consider.
You’re not the first person to mention the Maaco route. I can definitely remove the trim but would need the body work done.

Check with @Tank , he has a shop he has used that did good work with fair prices on his Suburban a few years ago. He recommended them to me, but I can't place the name right now.
I think its Pattersons ?

If it's a "driver" - $3500 will get you Maaco's best with base / clear and some body work included. My brother had his '99 single cab done there, truck came out great no compliants. The more you remove for chrome / trim / emblems, the better it comes out.....

Our Maaco in Prescott does nice work, friend of my just had his 2000 Dodge van done and it came out great. I’m picky about pant work and tried to pick his a part, looked good. I think he paid around $3k.😎

Yes, Patterson Collision Center in Valencia.

I believe @H20 Toie uses them to paint his vehicles.

Patterson’s won’t touch it, one of the brothers was doing side jobs but is done with it and the other who owns the shop won’t touch a repaint.

Not surprised. Have a friend that owns Yoshi's Autobody in Granada Hills and he will no longer do full repaints.

That is what I did on my car. Had a shop (Simon’s) do all the bodywork I wanted. I then disassembled the car for paint,

It worked out well!

So i guess I won't bother taking my Chevelle there......I heard they do good work on vintage cars. So that's done with now?

Yeah Jeff Patterson collision repair in Valencia. He did fantastic work on our Yukon. Don’t know why he won’t touch a repaint. Too expensive to prep it maybe?

Weird. Isn’t all paint jobs repaints?

curious. Why are the shops not wanting to do full repaints? Seems odd, turning away business in your field.

I have a 1990 K5 Blazer I need repainted. I will definitely pull the bumpers, lights, and other trim off when ready for paint.

repaints are way more work
Use lot more space and take to long is my guess
Hard for them to make money

… I need a complete repaint on my 97 Dodge Ram … Been panel painting it since I bought it in 2006 or seven… it has actually been about a five footer all this time… but a lot of peeling paint these days… due to the pricing having skyrocketed on these trucks …it probably is worth throwing a good paint job on it… the silver part is actually a 1963 Buick Riviera color…

A good paint job will cost more than the truck is worth
Only worthwhile if you want to keep it and have something to be proud of

Are you changing the color? Just curious why they pulled the doors and fenders. I’m keeping mine white so I don’t need the jambs done. That’s should save some $$.

And you’re absolutely right about paint jobs costing more than what the truck is worth. I talked with Pete Santini yesterday and I about shit myself when he told me what he would do it for. I know it would be perfect when he’s finished but it’s still way out of my price range and not worth it for anything but a garaged, weekend driver, which our truck is not.

Majic tractor paint.
$55 a gallon at tractor supply.
Works good for old bötè trailers and old equipment.
Brush, roll, or spray.
A buddy sprayed his '79 Chevy short bed white and looked good.

I sold my shops about a year ago. Any shop that does collisions will probably shy away from repaints. Try the smaller shops they will be your best bet and yes materials are crazy priced these days.
You had that shop for years

I'm another that would recommend Maaco. The repainted a buddy of mines Pathfinder. It cost $4700 and it looked pretty damn good.
There is also the mexico route if you can find someone you trust down there.

Let me know if you find anything. I have been waiting to do mine for years, but frankly being told 30k with a straight face slowed my efforts. My car is straight, the clear coat is just gone, needs some minor body work, and I'll pay to have something decent done, but not 30k :)

What is the reason for not doing this in general. Not enough profit? Too much headache and grief when it doesn’t come out show quality?
Or have enough work with out it ? Seems a shame to pass up on money/work.
Maybe not enough employees???

Profit.
It’s also paint. People will find flaws and bitch about. Then gotta redo. A good paint job usually starts at 10k and gets higher. Very rare that people will pay that.

I can see that, and the well paying insurance jobs are probably waaaaay more profitable with less labor and risk. Slap a fender on a new car, spray it and let it roll, collect the check

In their words "It's not what we're set up to do, we're set up to fix crashed cars". They have done many show quality paint jobs, in fact Geoff painted my drag boat.

I think it’s been 14 years, but a friend had his 1970 Chevelle painted at One-Day Paint and Body (similar to Maaco). Green to blue color change. $2600. Obviously that price isn’t comparable to today.

Here’s his breakdown of the work performed: “I pulled the chrome, weatherstripping, etc myself, and let the shop at it... The current paint was chipped, faded and stained but no bubbling or peeling (good adheasion). They scuffed the car, fixed some minor dings, filled a few holes, gave the car a once over with a long board, painted the car, clear coated, sand & buffed the CC, painted all the jambs (I changed the color) and the complete underside of the hood and trunk, and it was about $2600.”

There were some flaws that required rework. In the end he was super happy. He did all the assembly of trim, bumpers, weatherstripping. I’ll likely go a similar route on my ‘71 Chevelle.

I wanted power mirrors ( not available on an 89 dually )
So I bought a set of doors from a white 91 suburban
I thought he was going to do a quick job
But he tore the whole thing down
Did the same on my blazer and suburban
Came out Bitchin and 5 years later still looks awesome

People have no idea how much time it takes to do it right. And the sue happy world we live in doesn't help. People will say they want a decent paint job, not a show car. Then they start picking flyshit out of pepper. Not worth the aggravation for collision shops. It truly is a pain in the ass. And lack of talented employees doesn't help the situation.

Theses are the jobs I wonder how they make any money on. Just the time to do what they said they did the shop made maybe 10 cents an hour. Hard to pay rent at that rate,

… Don’t be fooled… These Gen 2 trucks can fetch up to $39,000… The good 12 valve Cummins…million mile motors…Extra cab,…4 x 4… of course that is 120,000 mile trucks… Mine has 190,000 on it…
…Tops I’ve got $15,500 into it including the $12,500 purchase price in 2007…
… i’ve been fixing up cars… Upholstery and paint plus since 1963… at one time, had it down to a guy doing the bodywork and prep in his backyard in Pacoima…The bodywork would depend …the prep was 100 bucks… we would either rent a spray booth… Or if it was a car I was going to sell it went to One Day… in those days paint was not all that expensive… Big difference now…
… I believe they are still using chemically-based PPG in Tijuana… That could be the cheapest way out here… But my truck being a 4 x 4 and a diesel the cartel would probably snag it in a minute🤷🏽‍♀️
…There is a guy who used to live next-door to me who has a friend that owns a first class body and paint shop in Tijuana….I corresponded with this guy over the Internet quite a few years ago… I do not know if he is still in business???… but the former next-door neighbor is still in the area… So???..,

Was surprised. Well not really when my mom sent me this. She got backed into the other day. Hood / grill. 2700.00

Cheap paint doesn't last long. Every vehicle I've seen get a full repaint for under $4k has had the paint fade to white or peel by year 4. To repaint a full size truck you're probably looking at $7500 just in material for a good paint job.

A friend who owns Star auto body in Glendale told me he painted a 61 Ford Starliner SEMA car that was brought to him body work done and done well, on a rotisserie. He didn’t take it apart, do the body work, or put it back together and said the $35K he charged to paint it wasn’t enough to make it worth it for him. Granted the bottom of the car was as nice as the top but that’s still a large number for just paint.
