I hate it when people use larger words than necessary in an attempt to sound smart

I refer to those words as $7,000 words...

So it’s your contention that she is purposely obfuscating her intelligence quotient projection by utilizing an advanced level vocabulary in an attempt to “fool” smarter people than herself that she is of equal (or superior?) intelligence than those reading her text strictly based on the number of syllables in her chosen prose?
Interesting.

I agree 100%. I was going crazy reading the review letter in the Boat Show thread. It was very overcomplicated language, to sound smart.

With all due respect. . . increase your vocabulary rather than complain because others don't dumb theirs down to communicate with the masses on their level. Our language skills are dismal. Young people have a difficult time reading text from 100-150 years ago because modern writers write to the lowest common denominator and teachers teach so that the most kids can pass. How many times I sat in meetings and was told that we need to make our tests more “accessible” so that more kids can pass. That means dumbing down the language and the questions.

I applaud this woman for refusing to reduce the level her language for the masses. She probably wrote this several times, choosing her words carefully. Rise to her level instead of expecting her to reduce herself to yours. Get a dictionary. Learn some new words.

In our efforts to reach everyone when we speak or write, we have lost the eloquence of our language. Watch some movies from the 1940s or read a book from 1910 and you’ll see what I mean. Dumbing it down is not the answer, IMO. Instead, we should be pushing the envelope.

Absolutely.
Don’t even get me started on today’s complete disregard for proper spelling, or worse, improper grammar and prose.
The rampant misuse of homonyms literally makes my eye twitch. No one even cares anymore about accuracy.
It doesn’t matter how “smart” a person is if they can’t talk, spell, or write at least somewhat proper.

No watt eye meen?

Don’t be afraid of those big words!
Look for root words, prefixes and suffixes.
Sound them out and break them down and it’ll all make sense!
