I know we have several veterans on the boards. Anyone spend time at Fort Irwin - National Training Center?
It’s the place right before Barstow on the 40 heading West. I was talking to a coworker earlier this year that used to work there. Like most, always saw the military hardware Turns out it’s a massive war games area. They actually have, or had, tours available.

My buddy from the military said that’s where they take armored vehicles and disassemble them for scrap.

Fort Irwin appears to be the place where how to win a ground war is spec'd. Not sure how the future of drones will quickly send that to pasture, but I watched an unbelievable drone light show at the WI/OSU football game last night!

A buddy of mine works there. He observes, evaluates, grades their performance in these war games. He has to do the 21 day rotation with them.

Fort Irwin is 30 minutes north of Barstow in the middle of nowhere. The yard you see off the 40 is the Marine Corps logistics base, and the yard you see off of the 15 just before Ghost Town Road is the GOV planet surplus auction yard.

Thanks. I thought my coworker said that’s where they bring in and pre-stage each teams hardware. The simulations sound pretty legit. Teaching war games from A-Z. I figured it was on the other side of the mountain but didn’t realize how big it is.

BNSF main lines run right through MCLB Annex, so I would assume they offload a lot of the military equipment at the annex and then transport it out to Ft. Irwin on trucks or under its own power.

I’ve delivered some equipment out there and they took me into the middle of the desert to drop it and the cities they have built they look like Iraq cities is crazy. Bad ass training stuff

I think the loading/unloading is on the UPRR out of Yermo.

Back in the day, when Afghanistan and Iraq were in full swing, before deploying you would either go to NTC or JRTC. I went to JRTC, its in the swamps of Louisiana, fort Polk specifically, yes to get ready to go to the desert lol.

Basically you go out there and play army, you’re “fighting” against the unit that’s stationed there permanently, you wear sensors on your body armor and helmet and they can “shoot” you with a laser or something. They get you used to armored vehicles, also “roughing it” in general, there’s no walking alone, they surprise attack you at night and have to run out to the bunker or fighting position, things like that. There’s also role players out there, basically actual Iraqi or Afghans and you interact with them, they act like village leaders etc.

I did allot of HVAC work out there around 2006-2008

Lots of training and big booms.

Also hot as fuck. It’s down in a valley and the heat just sit there and cooks your ass.

Also they have a full Iraq type neighborhood built out there. I built some of the sheet metal props.

I worked at the Goldstone Deep Space comm site in the summer, around 1989. That did that suck.
