I was traveling every week for a few years, and use SW airlines almost exclusively. I always bought my tickets same day except for my Monday flight, which I’d reserve waiting for my flight home Friday afternoon.
Most of my traveling was during peak Covid lockdown down. Masks were required at all time on the airport back then.
American was my other choose, but for a last minute traveler, all the Aisles and window seats would be full, and only rear seating available. The prices were near Identical to SW airlines last, and SW seem to have more options.
I stopped flying in 2022.
I tried using the Expedia app, but found those apps were worthless if you fly all the time, and buy tickets on short notice.
I must have gifted over 50 flights on my rewards program over those 3 years to kids, nieces and nephews. And also gifted rooms using my Hiltons rewards. Hawaii has a few nice Hilton resorts, and we always got the better rooms with spectacular views.
Search via Google Flights, book via specific carrier's website.
A branded credit card (example: one of the United Mileage Plus Visa CC's) are good if flying a lot on a specific carrier. Otherwise, AMEX and Chase have CC's that earn points for flight miles.
The Points Guy website has a lot of good info and strategies on maximizing rewards when traveling.
