I picked up a long deck 18 Nordic V drive and am getting ready to go through and rebuild have a few questions as I always used jets.
1) Has Halibrand in out and reverse freshly rebuilt should I stay with this there is no Whirlaway. Going to build around 750 hp and have 250 shot Nitrous.
2) should I use a transmission like a Lenco or should I just trust the drive for in out and reverse.
3) should I go to a Casale and transmision and get the benefit of shifting while running.
I planning this for a river cruiser and little drag boat for beating jets and thats it 2 seats or maybe a bench.

Reverse is highly overated in a v drive...the prop tries to pull the ass end underwater.

Most of the V drive guys us a transmission in a cruiser...21' and over. Littler boats just gear it for the job and save the weight.

If you want to go over 75mph or have more than 500 HP then a whirlaway would be a good idea.

I have heard that the Halibrands are louder than a Casale but will be stout enough.

The Halibrand will be very hard to get different gear ratios for. And you need some kind of prop release with the power you have. Reverse and prop releases don't usally work together and the release is pretty much a must have.

Look for a 10 degree quick change casale (with whirlaway).

I agree with Superdave on this, put the money into a split case Casale 10 degree box.

Funny, the two-speed powerglide in our flatty, with reverse, works just fine.

Always wondered about the Powerglide thing. Does the tranny allow the prop to freewheel when you lift or does the output stay locked up?

If the motor locks up with an automatic trans i believe the pump stops turning, so the pressure bleeds off and the clutches slip. However i don't have any personal experience with the happening (thankfully :D) so i couldn't tell you how fast that occurs, and whether or not it occurs fast enough to be safe... My guess is probably no, it's gonna slow that boat down wayyy fast until it finally releases...

A whirlaway is a much better deal for safety, and reverse is not that sweet in a flatty, all it takes is one wave and that sucker is under water, they are so small and maneuverable that it's not really necessary, just keep a short paddle in the thing, ditch the reverse, and go with a straight in-out on the shaft. it will give you way more room in the boat, and save a ton of weight.

This is what it looks like. I am tearing all the riging out now and I removed the fiberglass tanks going to splatter the inside and powder coat all the motor rails. I think I am going to ditch the bucket seats and go with a bench.

I had a Velvet trans in my flat. Did not really use it much to back up. More to stop and to have that soft neutral.

Please please please please think twice about splatter painting the inside of that thing!!!!!!! It's not the bilge of a hallett, splater painting looks like doggy doo doo, and once you do it there is no turning back, let's see some pics of what the inside looks like now.

I agree about painting the inside...although mine was. I have a weird boat that has a solid floor...so if there is an issue it'll be with the stringers...and there are 4 of them.

If you need a velvet drive (72C) let me know.
