Every now and again you gotta fire up the machines just to keep them lubricated and help a friend out.. 02Howard26 got some new batteries and the original battery box is too short..

So my son is out here and he wanted to learn how to do all this stuff.. So we had a lesson on how simple adding and subtracting works in everyday life.

we measured the battery. We measured the insets, we measured the pluses and minuses And then add the insets to the poles

There was a thread recently where a guy was asking what tools to buy getting started. A magnetic base and an indicator setup is a must IMO.

here we set the indicator on the lathe and then straightened the tool holder.. when the indicator doesn’t move when you are swiping back and forth you know it’s straight.

You should teach him about electricity by having him measure between the terminals with a metal ruler

Just saw this. Was going to add to my thread, glad to see this tho.
I’ve been around lathe and mill when i was young, but was very different than how Dave did these poles. I showed up a little later than I’d liked to and missed the cutoff of the parts. But the square bottoms I’m sure he will explain was bad ass watching then when he later had to spin the edge of the square.
Wish I’d taken photos while he was at it didn’t even think about it but the parts came out perfect.

I have this same problem with my battery boxes.
time to hit up Kyle @ WOT and see if he can resolve it. Looks like crap with the spacing off

Could have gone all fancy but they are just the upright posts, and not really even visible. So they are simply the extra length, I’ll clean and polish them before final install. But the bosses birthday today so doubt I’ll be able to play today and gotta work tonight.

Look at that dirty tool box. Do you use it for work or something?!

So we faced the end of the material, put a part off tool in it, pull it out a little past the length desired and touch the end.. now you offset the width of the cutter so that the backside of the cutter will end up being to the length of the part and part it off..

Drill and tap

Pro tip, throw the lathe in low and put your chamfer tool in it and wave it running.. throw the tap in the tail stock and leave the tail stock floating (don’t lock it) when you feed the tap in to the material the floating tail stock allows for a lot of room for error without breaking the tap. I generally will power tap 1/2-3/4 inch into the hole before tapping the rest by hand on a one inch depth.

by leaving the lathe running between the chamfer and the tap you just eliminate one step.

Now we make the ends square to go into the recess and we are done. My collet master is all gummed up so I need to take it apart and clean it.. so out comes the spindex

You did get a pic of the squaring of the part. I didn’t see you snap that. That part was pretty cool to watch.
again thank you greatly for your expertise and time.
