So with no actual destination in mind, left Cortez Co and drove to Sumner Lake State Park south of Santa Rosa NM. Not impressed, one and done. Lake is down and stained kind of muddy looking. Campground isn’t too bad and hardly anyone here. Next stop Lake Colorado State Park in Texas.

Thursday morning breaking camp early to head to Clovis NM to buy 2 new house batteries. Apparently one is going bad and won’t keep enough charge for the fridge to run on propane even. So I checked them and one is getting pretty warm and smelling. Not a good sign and even set off the CO/propane alarm last night. Had to open the vent above it and turned the fan on. Seemed to work as the light is now green on the detector but you can still smell the battery in the coach. Not a good thing. Jeep stands for Just Empty Every Pocket, Boat stands for Break Out Another Thousand, but I’ll have to figure out what Motorhome stands for. Journey continues.

Ok new deep cycle batteries installed and got on the road. Just pulled in and got hooked up to 50 amp service thank god because it’s a 100 fawking degrees right now. Both a/ c units cranking. Couple of pics of the campsite, more later when Charley and I go see more of the lake. This one looks way better than the last one. Nobody here either, nice and quiet.

Going to start 3 rd leg today. Will be leaving Lake Colorado Texas State Park today and head to Hilltop Lakes to see a keeping buddy that is recuperating from a near deadly mc crash where a distracted driver decided to take the off ramp forcing him to hit the ditch at about 70. He woke up as they were loading him in the ambulance with badly broken legs and other injuries. Spent a couple months in ICU, now home but hasn’t yet been cleared to start trying to walk again. Very lucky to be alive. Driver of p/u pulling gooseneck trailer didn’t stop. Guy was on his phone go figure.
Anyway, this lake and campground very nice for an out of the way location. Tried a little fishing from the fishing dock but didn’t do any good. Last of the pics from here.

Pretty cool when you have the campground to yourself!
Not always. One of many years in Kernville CA and weather was wet and cold. Only 3 spots in place full when a skunk got the dog. I am sure the skunk usually didnt make it that deep into camp looking for food, but he had very few choices.

Enjoy

We have (2) 50 amp hookups at our place if you wanna hit LOTO for a few days. Just know it's VERY conservative republican where we live
I would fit in then as long as there are some cold craft beers and maybe a shot or two of Pendleton. May look into that when I get done with Arkansas. Different way home. Thanks for the invite.

Got to say it’s a hot humid sob here in Texas Hill Country. Running generator to run a/c going down the road. Gas is cheap (being relative) just gassed up for 2.89, diesel under 3 as well.

Safe travels. I always enjoyed finding places that were very few other people at. I was never a KOA type traveler. You use Harvest Host? If not you should check it out. Some fantastic stops along the way. I usually stayed at ranches farms and wineries.

Ok if you haven’t heard of Hilltop Lakes like me, here are some pics. South of Waco close to a small town of Normangee. This one of the prettiest places I have been so far. If I was younger I would consider buying here. 3 lakes, 18 hole golf course.

4th leg update. Left Texas and now in Arkansas. Will post up pics tomorrow or the next day of the lake. One thing I will say about Texas is the roads, especially the back roads I mostly took, are pretty damn nice. Just cracks me up though to be on a 2 lane road in the middle of nowhere and speed limit is 70 or 75. Although I rarely drive the Moho over 65 still cool to see. Kind of liking the gas prices as well. Lowest I’ve seen so far was 2.41 and diesel is under 3. When you get about 7 mpg, it really helps. Stayed at my buddies place that had the bad mc wreck and good thing he was wearing his brain bucket. It’s deeply scratched. Cut his leathers off him and the bike was totaled. Still has trouble walking but at least he still has the leg and should recover most if not all movement. Has more screws and metal in him than most hardware stores but glad he is still alive. Now almost 2 weeks of fishing to do and spread some ashes at the lake. Just doesn’t feel the same being here without her but I know she is with me and Charley in spirit.

Ok this is my home for the next 5 days then move to another cove for 10. Little libation first. 10 bucks a day full hookups with 50 amp service. This is with senior lifetime pass and for you youngsters it’s 20 which is still a killer deal.

Thanks Tom. You are a very gracious host and enjoyed pounding a ”couple“ of beers with you and Justin. Landed in Corpus Cristi, hooked up and both a/c pumping. It’s a hot sob here. Staying for 3 days so will do some exploring with Charley tomorrow and get him on the beach.

This has to be the most relaxed I’ve been in the last 3 years. The ocean and waves just are relaxing. The ocean is really

blue but the sunlight washes it out.

Just got home after driving over 1200 miles today from Fort Sumpter Texas to Cortez Co. Reminded me of the truck driving days but without the white crosses and black beauties lol. Glad to be home and will update and close out this adventure tomorrow.

To finish up this travel thread, I have named it Nina’s Farewell Journey in honor of my best friend and wife that cancer claimed June 28th. We always liked going places in which ever motorhome or travel trailer we had. So that’s what this became, Nina’s last ride. Figured up the mileage this morning and close to 3500 miles, afraid to total up gas bills but will do that after cleaning out the motorhome. She would have loved the places Charley and I went and sights we got to see. She especially would have loved Padre Island as we had talked about going there. We took some of her ashes and spread them at the lake in Arkansas where she is from and we went twice a year. Thanks to my friends (new and old) I stopped to see for their hospitality and even feeding me. Thanks to all for riding along may see some of you in Havasu this winter.
Bob
