What and how much was you're first automobile ?

I had an ugly ass 61 Falcon my dad spotted sitting in an orchard. Bought it for 20 bucks less engine and tranny. (Had a donar ) this was in 1975ish. I learned a hell of a lot putting it all back together with my dad's guidance.

'56 Ford big back window. Bought it in '72 for $1500 when I was 16. Had a stock 272 Y block in it and I replaced it with a 394 Olds, vertex mag, 2 fours, fender well headers, Clay Smith cam, 3:56's in the reared, B&M 4 speed hydro and so on. I was working at the Tahiti shop after school and Saturdays making I think 3 bucks an hour. I could barely keep gas in it but it sure was fun.
33 cents a gallon for gas and 35 cents for a pack of Marlboro hards at the Mohawk gas station across the street from Mr. Weiman's boat shop.

My first car was a 70 GTO Judge. My first new car was a 78 El Camino SS that I payed $4559.00 cash for. Sold my Goat for $2200 and saved $1000 working. The rest of the money came from making slide plate brass carburetors for glass bongs. That and a few other things...... is why I can never run for Congress. :D

Bought it New Year’s Day in ‘94. Black on Black leather, sun roof, fully loaded. 17 years old— wtf were my parents thinking! Lol!

68 Ford F-250 410cid FE Mercury Marauder police interceptor punched 30 over to 418cid and cobra jet C-6 (1 extra clutch and steel in each pack). Had C8AE medium riser heads and medium riser aluminum OE Ford intake, heads were ported and polished, blue racer cam, Holley 750dp and hooker super comp headers. Had a best of 15.33 at 99mph at a weight of 5400lbs in 1996 at LACR. Just to put that in perspective stock cobras were running 15.50's at LACR and stock Z28's were running right along side of me, that's fast for a P/U of that size. I was 17yo when I built it the pic was taken when I was 19yo. And 2 first place wins with it.

I had an 86 Turbo Coupe. Fun car to drive and handled pretty good. My mom had a Super Coupe as well. That car was more fun to drive. :D

1956 Chevy truck with a big block and then a 1956 210 sedan. And this wasn't in the sixties but the late 90's.

We had the family Ranger my brothers and I shared through high school. 2.9 V6 with a 5 speed (gutless monster). After i graduated I had to buy my own car. I bought my grandparents '95 Thunderbird V8. It was between that and a 280Z. The chicken was $1500 and the Z was $1K. I decided the bird would be more reliable to get me to and from school in Pasadena. Wow! Was I wrong. It solidified the Mantra of Fix Or Repair Daily. I had fun in it though and it turned some heads...... Kinda.

1983 Nissan Pulsar just like this one. Hand me down from my brother. Had to warm it up 15 minutes before I could drive it. I can’t count how many times it would stall when I was making a left hand turn. Good times lol.

1971 Jeep J4000. 4 speed trans with a 360ci motor. 3" lift with 33" tires. My Dad bought it to use as a hunting truck and paid $600 for it. When he bought it, it had four different wheels and four completely different tires on it. The previous owner had painted it with a roller and a spray can. Dad bought it home on a flatbed and got to work on it. We cut out the rust and replaced the fenders and sprayed it in my Grandpa's workshop. Hunter Green Rustoleum. New wheels and tires and we never had any issues with it after that day. It ran like a scalded dog! :D

You guys had some cool rigs for sure!
Mine just led me down the path of working on and fixing things, which I think was my dad's main goal.

1966 Alfa Romeo Guilia Sprint GT.

Paid $2500
Put $2500 into it
Sold for $2500

This could be a $40k car if clean/restored today...but mine was a daily driver.

It’s not a good daily driver for a broke 16 year old.

Mine was silver but otherwise the same as this:

When I got my license I drove Dad's '86 Chevy Celebrity wagon....then graduated from that to a 1979 plymouth Horizon (orange) that my dad picked up from the neighbor for $300...the carb kept falling off every few days, which resulted in a flat spot from idle to WOT. A few days of snugging up the carb fasteners and I finally glued the fucker down with yellow weatherstrip adhesive...the nuts still vibrated off, but the carb stayed stuck.

The first car I picked and owned myself was a '72 El Camino...350/350/2bbl. It was rough, but no rust and ran OK. I de-smogged it (air pump) and noticed that it was leaking oil everywhere...so the motor came out and got re-sealed....only to continue to leak oil like nuts. Little did I know at the time, the upper hole on the passenger side of the balancer in the block, previously holding the air pump on, went through to the crank case...and that's where the oil was coming from. I did burnouts in that thing for about a year before I crashed it into a telephone pole.

53 Chevy 2 door businessman's coupe, didn't realize the rarity until many years later when I no longer had it.:(

My biggest mistake though was my 2nd car, 56 Chevy 2 door Bel Aire.

1980 Mercury Monarch, 4 door, white in color. At 16 I was pumped, one of my buddies had a flashing red light that we could plug into the cigarette lighter. Used to roll up to parties and hit the light and watch them scatter.

1976 Chevy Luv $400 aunt gave me $200 and pitched in . It was stick shift and the guy lived on a hill. Dad hoped in the passenger seat said there is your brake , clutch and skinny pedal . This what they all do this is how to use them , good luck. Went in his truck and drove away. Thats how I learned how to drive stick.

I was told by my parents that they would match what I had saved for a car. When I was 15-½ in 1979 I saved a $1000 and found a 73 El Camino 454SS. My old man negotiated it down to $1800. Biggest piece of shit ever, but it was mine and was saving up for engine and trans work. A few months later the gas prices went from 55 cents a gallon up to 95 cents. My birthday is in August and a week before, I came home on a Saturday night after being out with my friends to find out that my El Camino had been traded in for a Ford Fiesta! I was told that I wouldn't have been able to afford gas for the El Camino. I was so pissed. I had a job working at Ralph's at that time, I saved enough money, sold the Fiesta and bought another El Camino, also a piece of shit, but it was my El Camino.

Dad bought me a 68 Mustang coupe for Christmas when I was 14 for $250.00. Floor was all rotted out and was a 6cyl car. Spent the next 3-4 years fixing it up and and swapped in a 302. Had a lot of fun in that car and spent every last dime I had on it.

My first car was a rusted out '70 Plymouth 'Cuda w/383 4-speed. Paid $350 for it. It lasted about 3 months. The rear leaf spring mounting rusted off and was deemed unrepairable by a mechanic. Next car was a '69 Rustang 351C-Auto. The upper control arm rusted off the unibody. Had that POS for about 2 months and paid $400. I didn't have the tools, money, or expertise to fix either and had them hauled off as junk. Got $25 each in scrap value and a valuable life lesson about cars.

A 1967 Camaro for $475. With one exception, I don't think I ever paid more than $500 for any classic or muscle car growing up. The early 80's was a great time to pick up gas guzzlers on the cheap.

Love seeing the diversity of vehicles and years on this thread.

Mine was this 1970 BOSS 302. Bought it from Carson Brummett in November 1972 when I was 16. $2,400, my dad had told me if I had a job he would split the cost of my first car, but he also had veto power.

We had a Mandella at the time and for some reason he was at their shop one day. He came home and said Carson had some kind of a Mustang for sale and that I’d probably like it a lot. So we went over there and Carson took us for a ride. Bingo! I was sold and so was the car.

Loved that car like no other. Especially on Fridays when I’d take it up to Lake Arrowhead and on Sundays coming home. Sold it when I went to college in 74.

At 15 I bought a 68 Bronco for $1000, had some rust, but had a 289 and a Warn winch. Sold it and bought a 66 Bronco a couple years later, painted, lifted it, did the interior and loved that for a few years. Sold it and bought a 74 Bronco (power steering) and still have that 28 years later. You could say I’m in to Broncos!

I inherited our Jeep Grand Wagoneer in 1988 when turned 16. It was an 85. I drove that until Sept 1989. My birthday. My Dad ordered me a Miata when they first came out.... Drove that for almost a year. Sold it and used the money to buy an 1985 Corvette for $10k. I consider the Miata my first car, as the Jeep was a family spare vehicle.

My first truck and boat in the same picture.
1966 International Scout.
Found the truck on a residential street in San Clemente with a for sale sign. Knocked on the door and a old guy 70-75 answered and said it was his hunting truck. We agreed on a price and a time frame to pay for it. Month or two. When I called him to tell him I had saved up the money to pay it off, he said sorry Brian I decided to keep it. I couldn’t believe it. So I gave it a few days. I knew I needed to talk to his wife. I called back a couple times and each time he’d answer. So I hung up. Finally on the third day she answered. Boom. I told her I had saved the money and was ready to get the truck. She said come get it. I said are you sure Lou said he decided to keep it. I could hear her screaming at Lou in the background. Lol
20 minuets later I had the truck.
One of those I wish I never sold
First picture is me pulling the boat out of the original owners garage in Orange,Ca my 18th birthday.
I had just received enough cash as a gift to pay off the final $200. Lol
Great o’l guy let me make payments to him for 7 months. Purchased for $3,300 in 1986.

1966 Sanger Wooddeck Flatbottom 425 Nailhead for power.
Just recently got the boat back and doing a full restoration.
It’s crazy looking in the boat seeing parts I made when I was 18. I’m now 50

Now if I could only find the truck

Great thread !
