My Pop's just called me, said the traffic was backed up for a mile or more, it was on the east side of Rice 2 or 3 miles, life flight helicopter was just taking off, they left one in a body bag. Said it was on the long straight section, couldn't tell if somebody was trying to pass an went headon or what, vehicles were in the desert.

Wonder if it's a head-on or they just lost control.

Shit my grandpa and his buddy were headed out there today. I called his cell but no answer. Hoping its just because he has a cocktail in his hand and is hanging by the water

Did they state what type of vehicles were in the accident?

EDIT: Nevermind, he just called and was down in the pits at bluewater

RIP. I don't worry about myself on rice, but I worry about others taking me out

Boy these threads just suck. I don't drive it often because of the risk of accident. Hardly ever with my wife and kids. I have heard of a few car versus MC, there was one a couple years back. Horrible accident.

RIP

From Desert Center to Parker via 177 / 62 = 85.2 miles

From Desert Center to Parker via Ehrenberg = 96.1 miles.

I've timed it before...that 11 miles takes about 10 minutes more than Rice...

<<< is not interested in exchanging 10 minutes for his life...

And a much more chill, flat ride. Much lower speed limits too. Some 25mph and 35mph spots.

Passed by around 5 and it was all cleaned up. Only see turn around marks on the fresh oiled pavement. Got pulled over so a oversize load could pass. Asked the CHP what went down as no skid marks. He was not sure said he came up on scene and 2 other LEO's were already there and motorcycle driver was covered in road deceased and driver of the car had been life flighted. Asked if Harley or street bike as I have neighbors who drive out solo. Said it appeared to be Harley style but was mangled and already on flatbed. RIP.

One of my friends two sisters went back to Ca. this afternoon, and I gave them directions on how to go the Ehrenburg way before I even heard about this. They left late enough they would have been safe but would've had to deal with the aftermath. I went Rice Rd. for years, but changed about a year and a half ago, I won't be changing back.

May the victim RIP.:(

What is it about Rice Road that equals so many accidents? I think I've only been on it once so I don't get why these things seem to be so common.

There is a sharp edge to the shoulder and most of the shoulder is soft sand. Lots of over correcting rollovers because of it.

The head ons happen because people get complacent and relaxed combined with higher speeds. Lots of dips in the road and long stretches of straightaways. People misjudge distance and/or can't see the other car while passing because of the dips.

Counted about 15 crosses today. Impatient people making wreckless passes account for most. Avoided a head on last year while Veedriven was driving. Guy passed a semi in a double yellow area with as turn. Luckily no soft sand where he had to go to avoid the heads on.

Alice is a nurse at USC says less than 1 out of ten rapes, abandon babies and murders get reported in the media.
News ain't a reliable source of stats.

We still use Ehrenberg rd.

Sad to hear of this. RIP fellow Biker That's horrible.

Patience is your friend on Rice Road. When I tow the RV and boat I take the Hwy 62 to Rice Rd.
Gives me some places to stop for trailer tires. :grumble:

I have only done Ehrenburg once, and it was probably over 10 years ago, time to re-familiarize myself with it. My last trip out I saw headlights on my side of the road, a bit too close, I started slowing, slowing more, slowing hard, slamming breaks on, and then about to pick my spot in the desert to drive into, and finally the dildo completed his passing move. Seems the two morons were having a dick measuring contest because I swear I saw what was going down a full 20 seconds before I was about to dive into the desert. First real scare I have had out of all my trips. :grumble:

My only concern with ehrenberg route is that your driving through the reservation. If a wreck occurs isn't everything overseen by CRIT not CHP?

Why bring this up? We had a friend hit head on and killed on a reservation in Florida.
Highway Patrol and Indian police were in scene. The Indian that hit her was clearly shitfaced beyond belief. He was loaded into a Indian police car and was never heard from again. Florida Highway Patrol basically said there wasn't anything they could do to intervene, he was protected since the crash was on the reservation.

I take CA 95 in Blythe up to Wilson Crossing (just past Lost Lake)and over into AZ. This way you're on Injun land for a shorter distance into/thru Parker.

When we leave early in the morning, we usually take 177 to 62, but I have always been sketched about that road. I have taken Amboy Road to the 40 at night before and hated it so will never go that way again. I have never taken Ehrenberg Road. Is that the road that you get on in Blythe that runs parallel to the river??

Wow, just mapped that out from my house and the route is literally only 10 miles longer. I will GLADLY take the extra time on the 10 Freeway then take the 177/62.

Smart. It's nice and flat too, an easy cruise. Just mind the posted speeds and you'll be fine. It's also in civilization, and not Land of the Lost like Rice. :thumbsup

Blythe to Parker has Indian cops that have no problem giving you a ticket for going 3mph over the speed limit. The only good thing is that you just pay a fine and it doesn't go on your record.

Erhenberg Road is a total shithole, you will get arrested, it's unsafe and you'll probably die first trip using it, I know this because I died first time I tried it :D

Not to mention and most importantly, it's fuckin closed :p

In truth, we've used it for a vast number of years after we got tired of all the carnage, close calls and EGO-ASSHOLES on Rice road. To date we've not had any close calls and haven't encountered any of the "Rice Road Attitude" either. But it's a road best suited for those who prefer to travel relaxed, who don't see themselves as the world's greatest race truck driver, doesn't give a fuck if he arrives home 15-20 minutes later, is patient enough to pass (Cars, trucks, some towing, Large Agricultural trucks and Ag. combines) when it's safe and doesn't tow his 28' boat at 80 mph thinking he's Joe Fuckin Cool. In other words, folks you don't mind sharing the road with.

I don't know how well the Indians treat you if you get in a wreck, hopefully we never will, in 15 years we've never even had reason to apply the brakes hard, would sure be nice to keep it that way :D We do always run it with our lights on for that extra bit of safety and we've never been introduced to any local Indian or Sheriff cops --- because we're quite content to roll that stretch easy, enjoy the green farms on both sides of the road and relax. When we hit the I-10, then I put on my "I'm an ASSHOLE" hat and it's peddle to the metal, in order to make up all that lost time :D OH Yeah, You really might want to read the speed limit signs and mind your speedo.

Seriously, I do cringe whenever somebody out of the kindness of their heart recommends this route, because once the Rice Road Assholes starting abusing it, they'll surely fuck it up for the rest of us, so yeah, if anybody asks, that road is friggin CLOSED

I began taking the CA 95 out of Blythe up to Vidal jct after being pulled over twice on the reservation while on the AZ 95. The second time the cop was drunk and pulled me over to "remind me what the speed limit was on his reservation" - didn't get cited either time but the drunk cop was sketchy so we stopped going that way.

And that is why we go that way. I will not drive Rice Road as there is no need to chance it.

If you don't think there is a checkered flag at the end of Rice Rd then you'll be safe as any other road. Driving at a natural pace it makes it easy to see the dumbasses ahead or behind you. Anyone wanting to pass graciously is let by easily.
Not driving out on Friday nite and back on Sundays lessens the traffic too. Weekdays I get the sense more regulars/locals are the road and not the nutty weekenders.

There are 4 spots where the speed limit drops on Indian; right as you get off the freeway, where the Poston WWII memorial is, where the school is, and finally the stretch from the city hall building past the hospital and all the way up to 95.

I have been driving Rice road for over 50 years. The first accident I saw was in 1962 when a guy driving a corvette was driving too fast and went airborne off one of the dips in the road. My wife and I have been driving it on and off during the week going back and forth between the house in Havasu and have had no problems. The last couple of trips we have gone back to driving across the reservation. Sometimes during the week we may see only one or two cars on the reservation and only once in 13 years have I seen a cop giving a ticket on the reservation. The extra 10 mins. it takes is not worth it to drive Rice road.

It's not the roads fault but the drivers on them.

I'm more worried about crossing the res. with the natives on Fire Water than the handful of speedy drivers on Rice.

The dips are fun, but my truck can't fly of them.

I now set the cruise at 72 and let the others around me go as fast as they want(albeit I have driven more than double that on stretches before).......I'm not worried, I often time see the same cars at the convenience store at Vidal.

That thought runs continuously through my pea brain but I've encountered drunk and dead-drunk Indians on Rice rd but neither ever on Ehrenberg rd.
I take the Indians to be pretty good defensive drivers too.

In addition to the extra miles, there is quite a bit of posted slower speed limits, 35 mph in some areas.

There is also a 95 on the CA side that goes up past Lost Lake and such, some dips but not the same as Rice Rd.

Although it is only about 10-12 miles longer it feels multiple times slower. After driving for hours on the freeway at 75+ going 35 anywhere feels like you could walk faster. The added length in time is somewhat just perception.
I still take Rice, stay alert and enjoy the views.

Did Rice road last Wed. Figured noon on Wed. no problem. Had to flash some guy down passing at me. Problem is you cant tell if they're closing at 150 mph or 200 mph. I don't like Ehrenberg, but I should get used to it. Since the time I was 3 wide on Randsburg rd on New Years day headed to Spangler, I'm a little more cautious.

Same with me. Been driving it for 10 years an never had a problem. Set the trucks speedo at 70 and get to Havasu when I get to the house (last time I checked the river was not going anywhere).
