A woman has died after what is believed to be the first fatal elk attack in Arizona’s history.

The Oct. 26 apparent attack happened in the woman’s backyard in the Pine Lake community in the Hualapai Mountains about 15 miles southeast of Kingman, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

The death was investigated by the Clark County coroner’s office after the woman died in a Las Vegas hospital, the department said in a news release Tuesday.

According to the department, the woman’s husband returned home to discover her on the ground in the backyard “with injuries consistent with being trampled by an elk” and a bucket of spilled corn nearby, the news release said. There were no witnesses.

Bucket of spilled corn... like she was feeding them?

Don’t Feed Wild Animals. “A bucket of spilled corn was near her body,” She was trampled. Those elk didn’t bring that bucket of corn. I’ve seen those elk up there. Typically docile. But, don’t feed them! They are survivors.

Wild animals are called that for a reason.

A couple of days ago I saw a video of tourists with phones out running to get a closer look at a female black bear and her two cubs. People in Yellowstone try to pet bison. It's a wonder more of these idiots aren't killed.

Yes. Here’s the rest. I messed up the copy/paste. Behind a paywall
The feeding of wildlife is “suspected of contributing to the attack,” the news release said.

The husband called 911 and his wife was taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center before she was transferred to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas. Kingman is about 100 miles southeast of Las Vegas.

Citing the husband, the news release said the woman was put in a medically induced coma. She died eight days later.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department said it didn’t learn of the attack until the next day, when a resident informed a department officer, the news release said. On Oct. 28, a game and fish officer went to the community and put warning signs on residents’ doors telling people not to approach or feed elk. He also spoke to the woman’s husband and other residents.

“While at the victim’s residence, the officer observed multiple elk tracks in the yard,” the news release said.

After the woman died Nov. 3, game and fish officers went door to door in the Pine Lake community, putting up more warning signs on doors and two roadside signs telling people not to approach or feed elk.

“This is believed to be the first fatal elk attack in Arizona,” the department news release said.

Here’s a photo of a healthy, large female elk, lounging under the trees, not far from the Pine Community. We didn’t bother her. Introduce a ‘pot of corn’ and it all changes.

Feeding the Deer and Elk is really common with the residents of Pine Lake. I would guess 80% of the homeowners feed them daily. Had a house near the lodge for several years, hauled bags of corn up nearly every weekend for the neighbors. Would leave corn out for the animals but never tried to feed them up close. The oldest known Elk that was monitored by AZ Game & Fish lived in an enclosure a few houses from mine. It lived to be twenty nine years old.

Sad deal...but feeding / interacting with wild animals like this is not a good idea. Losing your life like this is horrible.
I don't even like it when Cindy throws apples down in the pasture for the deer...

Many moons ago I was working swings, about midnight, minding my own dang business, when I happened upon a fresh buck vs. pickup truck T/C.
The driver of the truck was standing at the front of his rig watching the antifreeze spill when I walked up. I asked if he was OK or needed a tow.
"Oh, I am OK, but you should keep going towards town, that crazy woman is in trouble"
"ahh what crazy woman..??"
"Some nutcase came up behind me, looked at that forked horn that was knocked cold and said she was gonna take it to a vet. She loaded it up in the back seat of her car and took off"
Oh crap.
Well, I went down the road apiece, about a mile, and here is a woman standing in the middle of the road, her car was off in the ditch, and she was clearly...distraught.
"Help me, help me, there is a BUCK in the back seat of my car, I am transporting him to a Vet, but he WOKE UP!!"
The ruckus coming from the car was pretty amazing. It was a small sedan with the requisite whacko stickers on the back...you know, "Another woman for PEACE" etc.
""You have to do something, HELP IT!!.""
I was explaining to her that there was nothing I could do for a pissed off buck (in her car) when it kicked the rear window out, climbed out, and got on all fours on the roadway. It looked at us, and wandered off into the brush.
I walked over to her car, and she followed me.
The interior was destroyed, buck piss and poop and gawd knows what smeared everywhere.
Apparently, when he woke up he had ta go.
The woman turned, looked at me and said "I need an accident report, I think. I need to contact the people that clean cars out and get a tow out of the ditch.
She was serious.
I got her the tow, waited for it with her and had dispatch contact a ride for her. She did not get her accident report.
"Ma'am, this was no accident. Trying to load a full grown buck into your car caused this. you can call your insurance company and if they want to talk to me I will be happy to talk to them...also...we don't have a business service that I am aware of,that cleans cars."
She had no clue.
They walk among us, folks....

We used to get elk at our vacation home. They’d sometimes block streets or stroll through our property. Never did I feel it necessary to feed or challenge them.

By the way, these pics were taken through a windshield and a mud room window. Nope, not going out there. 😊

We see it a lot at our house in northern AZ. People putting out water and food for the animals and then wondering why they continue to come back and eventually become a problem. Then animal control has to remove them or kill them and people freak out. They don’t understand if you fed that animal you are responsible for its death.

Well, there goes the “Elk got her” defense. Kinda like she slipped off the railing on the cruise ship deal. 😬😏.

I have pics with the grandson petting them up there as well. They are either on my old computer or 3-4 iPhones ago. The elk basically just stand there.
3 years ago I hit one at night near the animal sanctuary on 66 in a Ford ranger. Hit so hard it bent the metal bumper into the tire and shredded it. $4700 to Chris’ auto body. He came flying out of nowhere and I hit the front half. A direct head on he probably would have gone through the windshield. I was doing a job in Peach Springs and the next day there was an at least 12 foot circle of blood. I had to drive a mile to get cell service. Called dps and left it at the sanctuary for State Farm to pick up the next day and had wife come get me. Fun night.

My Mother was out on a walk on my brothers ranch some years back by herself. Hours went by and my brother couldnt find her.
He finally did, She had been Trampled and gored by a male deer (Buck)…. She spent two weeks in the hospital and survived, but eventually Slipped away. After much investigation into what happened, it turned out that trhe people on the neighboring Ranch had been Feeding the Deer and this Buck regularly… Mr. 30-06 took care of him real quick. What a Bad Deal. When you see those signes that say (Dont feed the wildlife) There is a reason behind them. I hope this woman in Kingman didnt suffer too long. After seeing my 100lb. Mother after the attack i couldnt believe she was still alive…..

I read the title and got so excited since my ex-step mom lives up there in a house my families trust owns. One could only hope…… Maybe I should send her some corn. 🤔

Saw my first elk maybe 10 years ago. I had my Husky shouldered, walking down a draw towards a pitchy pine. Firewood cutting, about this time of year. Heard something, and turned to see this giant buck coming up the draw, not 25ft from me. He must have known I wasn't a hunter, just looked at me with a "S'up?" nod and kept going. He was the size of my wife's mare, and giant antlers...he could have ended me and no one would have found me.

So you're telling us that a whacko like that would have the strength to load a large buck into the back of a small sedan on her own....lol

It was a female.. she was a little nervy at first but calmed down pretty quickly.. by nervy I mean it took a minute to coax her up to eating out of my hand.. and she would be ready to run if I made a sudden movement. After the second or third handful of whatever Walt fed those things it was pretty chill and I was petting it and had the kids feeding it etc

Fixed it for you. ;)

They are giant animals. Came around a turn a few years ago on the dirtbikes and almost ran into one, scared the crap out of me. Thankfully he just turned and sauntered away.

Bull, buck...big MF'rs 🤣
We very rarely see them in my area. My neighbor is a deputy, and was called out to an accident. "Deer vs Honda". He gets there, and there's a totaled Civic and a messed up bull. He said that's the only one he's seen down here in his 20 years.

It wasn't that big a big deer.
I dunno, maybe she was loaded with adrenaline from her "must help this poor creature" mindset, you know, like the stories of people lifting cars off of others trapped under them.
It was in the car, that is a fact. Until it came out the back window anyway.
She was alone. I know the old cowboy in the truck didn't help her, he was was too smart to do that.
I don't think it went in there on it's own.
I never ask crazy people how they accomplish things. Generally, it doesn't lead to rewarding conversation.
