My barber, Dennis, is a really cool guy. He's old and grumpy, just the way a barber ought to be.

He's also near deaf. He'll start cutting your hair with his world war two vintage clippers clacking away in my right ear and try to strike up a convo. That puts us both on the same playing field.

"HAAAAA????"

"NO VACATION."

"WHAT? I DIDN'T CATCH THAT."


I've learned to just say, "DAMN TAXES!" as I sit down and then I don't have to speak with him for the first 20 minutes of the cut. Yeah, a cut takes 30 minutes with him. He probably cut a head of hair in 10 minutes when he was young but his arthritis is getting pretty nasty so that adds 2 minutes. The rest of the 18 minute over-run can be accounted for with his grouching and wild arm gesticulation. It's down right terrifying when he's shaving my neck and starts to get himself worked up.

One of these days, there will be an announcement from one of my family that I passed on. Now you'll know what happened.
