So my mom and sister drove out to stay with my 87y/o grandmother for a few days, and on the way back my mom's car starts acting up... The way she described it to me, the engine revved up but the car wouldn't go up the hill.
They were able to limp the car into Payson AZ and get it to the Ford dealership. Service department says they can't find anything wrong so the reset the ecu and send them down the road. Few miles down the road, happens again. Bring it back to the dealer and they tell her they won't be able to get a tech to look at it until next week.
Well, it's now next week and they called to tell her she needs a new turbo and a new catalytic converter at a cost of $5,400. This don't jive with me since she said the car revved up but wouldn't accelerate so I call the service department. Here's where I start to get upset. Dude tells me there was mud under the car and the air filter was wet so the turbo and cat are bad now. When I asked how he can explain to me how, he says the filter was so wet, it caused the engine to run lean and burned up both the turbo and the cat. Huh... I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but this guy is on glue. I ask to speak to his manager. Now Bobby jumps on the phone and doubles down on the claim. I tell Bobby that this doesn't make much sense to me, you're telling me that the air filter was wet and caused over $5k in damage to my mom's car. Yes, he says. The car was clearly driven "off road" because there's mud under the car and the airbox was full of water. Claims the filter weighs like 5 pounds it has so much water in it. I explain what she described the car did and guy says "there has to be more to this story". As if my 65y/o mother drove her 2018 Ecosport down some muddy road and into a fucking lake or something.
Now I'm sitting here trying to sort out making the 7 hour drive to this dealership with my trailer so I can load her car up and get it back home.

Don't sound right to me either...ask them for pictures of codes.

This is a common issue though
Another one Fords seem to get is oil leaking from the turbo, puddling in the intake tract.

Driven off road. Yeah right.

American car dealerships suck ass.

Do they have a BAR office close to this dealership? I would open a case there ASAP if so.

Go get the car and take to a trusted independent shop . I’ve been preaching this for years . Stay away from dealers and corporate shops like Firestone , quick lube etc . It’s only gonna get worse with the complexity of cars and massive tech shortage

Something stinks with the dealership.

Wouldn’t it run rich if the air filter was clogged with water? There may be water ingested into the engine, but that would hydrolock it, not do what it’s doing. Also, that’s a minor amount of mud.

Is there another Ford dealer or a good independent shop nearby?

Get it out of the dealer in Peyson.

Does your mom have towing or AAA? Tow it somewhere else or home.

And, call Ford. Let them know what a franchised Ford dealer is doing to Ford owners.

They better have visual documentation of all the water in that air cleaner as well.

I had a guy sink his 4Runner in the river in Azusa Canyon, and we took video as we were taking the vehicle apart, and watching the water run out of everything. Including the intake manifold! 🤣

Pics and vids don't lie.

I also suggest calling Ford Customer Satisfaction ASAP.

FUCK THIS DEALERSHIP, ANY WAY YOU CAN!!!

Based on the description, I don't have a problem with the diagnosis of a plugged converter. I have a problem with them blaming it on a wet air filter and also saying an allegedly wet filter caused it to run lean. Best to get that car to someone who knows WTF they're doing.

No, it likely wouldn't run at all because the air filter would be wadded up in the intake pipe....it would probably idle and run off idle but simply wouldn't make any power. This is not a carbureted dinosaur...it meters fuel based on the amount of air it sees (either via MAS or MAP...not sure what this uses).

I have a significant problem with plugged converter diag. There was no mention of CEL, which would be present if there was a severe misfire or other event that might damage the cat. Cats don't just work fine and then burn down and clog....it's a process.

I'd like to show up with a D44 longside inner shaft over my shoulder and line up everyone involved with this case to have them explain their bullshit. The air filter, turbo, and cat have absolutely fuck all nothing to do with one an other or the failures they're reporting. This is taking advantage of an elderly woman and/or incompetence.... I can't fucking stand shops that do this shit.

Well Atleast they aren’t trying to stick you with a rental bill and tow bill after your brand new truck broke down.

Ford is about to end up on my shit list.
this sounds like a good story...

Sounds like getting the car, back in your hands, is the best option.

A copy of the codes they cleared, and the freeze frame data, would help the diagnosis immensely.

I don't recall all the particulars, did you call the Ford Road Side Assistance 800 # ? Thought that was good for the first 5 years ? How about your auto insurance, I know my State Farm policy includes some towing, AAA as well, but sounds like that's Iffy in AZ.

AAA failed to dispatch a provider to me. I got a call almost 2 hrs later from a provider who said they only had my number. No name or location or vehicle type. So since the guy who towed me don’t cover that area for AAA they said no.

Ford does not want to cover the rental because it was not a Ford product. I am only allowed to break down when a Ford rental is available🙄

Can’t get reimbursed for Brett towing the trailer because there is no paper trail. Which I can understand.

Keep in mind I have AAA with RV Plus
Factory Ford Roadside
Ford Premium 7yr/ 100k with Roadside, rental coverage included.

Truck is a ‘22 with 18,000 miles.
I have spoken to countless people and they all direct me to someone else who can’t help.
I sent receipts to Ford Monday requesting reimbursement. But from the conversations I had the rental is definitely not getting covered and tow probably is t getting covered because I did not call Roadside.

Kind of hard to think of all this shit standing in the side of the road with crying kids and scared wife with semi’s zooming by inches away.

Where did all of this supposed water come from that filled the seal air box?
I have a Cold Air Intake on my 05 Cummins and have driven through some rain storms and yet to have a water filled air filter. Piss on stealerships…

I agree that your situation warranted exactly what you were able to accomplish and unfortunately the types of circumstances that can render most of these hyped "Marketing benefits" useless when shit happens in rural America.
I wish you luck and I do hope you can prevail to get some reimbursement, but the main thing is, you and your family were safe and made the best of an unfortunate situation.
My son's 2023 Powerstroke is getting a new transmission at 80K miles. He took it in because it was shifting strange, one dealer did a reprogramming and claimed that's all it needed, didn't help. He took it to a different dealer and they told him his transmission was toast. Thankfully he's got the Ford Premium extended Service Plan.

Don’t get all wound up about it being just Ford. Chevy tried to blame me for a blown motor at 12k miles due to service intervals.

Except…

They had done the service intervals at every 3500 miles.

That was an absolute glorious moment sharing the documentation. They quickly covered the motor under warranty lol

This was my question exactly. Where does an elderly woman in Arizona go to find deep flooded creeks to drive through?

Donitra really helped us on my son's ranger. When the front differential exploded on the freeway. Ford told us there was no parts available for 6 months and she was able to source the parts and have them installed in <3 weeks. She also added a 36 month maintenance contract on the truck. Hopefully, she can help you in your situation.

Seriously, she doesn’t drive at night or in the rain. She get anxiety just driving on the freeway… that’s why my sister drove her out there. If there was that much water in the air filter, I would be more inclined to believe the dealership filled it with the freaking water hose.

I could show you a couple of creek crossings 5 minutes from downtown Payson. But that's not the point.
From the pics, somebody is trying to pass the buck, so to speak.
That dealership is full of shit.

When @CLdrinker broke down, I was seriously thinking about driving from the ranch, 20 miles north of Williams, to BHC, and try to fire the wrecker up and tow the entire truck and trailer up to Flag. He was only ~50 miles from BHC, and I was only 175ish away at the ranch.
Mind you, it hasn't been on the road for quite a few years. Let alone regs and ins isn't up to date. But it crossed my mind.

Note to self- get the wrecker up and running. Donations accepted 🙃

My plan as of this morning is to shoot out to Payson and rent a trailer from U-Haul. I'm figuring it is worth the $250 to use their trailer rather than run the 900-ish mile round trip with my trailer. I'll pick up the trailer, then pick up mom's car and bring it back to CA so I can get it to my mechanic friend and have him pull any codes from the ECU. I'll figure out what is actually wrong with the car from there. If nothing else, the car is back home where I can actually help my mom get it sorted out.
Thank you for the input and for letting me vent about this POS dealership.

From the original description, sounds like another ford transmission problem. Revving up and not going anywhere does not sound engine related to me. But what do I know. I only work on old shit.

Clogged cats will definitely stop you from going up a hill or hitting freeway speed while it will start and run at low speed but not very well.

I fixed a few cars with clogged cats with no codes.

Removing an oxygen sensor ahead of the cat to relieve some pressure usually improves the running to confirm diagnosis.

That was my original diagnosis to her when she told me what happened. She says the car revved but didn't accelerate. Who knows... Once I'm able to get it home, I'll definitely get a better idea of what the car is doing.

Yeah, my old 1995 Ram 1500 ate cats like cupcakes. I burned one up about every 2 years. That poor truck was always towing more than it should.

Turbo issue could also explain the rev and no power behavior, but I believe it will throw a CEL if the computer doesn't get the PSI of boost it is asking for.

About 14 years ago, I had a Ford excursion with the 7.3 PSD and 4R100 trans. Right after I bought it, cruising down the freeway in park city, transmission went out and it revved to the moon and didn’t go anywhere. Had it towed and through a Jasper reman in it.

Same thing with an automatic transmission. If the input speeds and output speeds aren't within set parameters, lights go on as well. It really needs a look at by an honest person.

Wow! I’m with you, that story doesn’t match the pictures. Think I would be making the drive to pick it up.

Kind of confirms my reasons for not buying anything with a turbo. Can’t deny how great they run - tell they don’t.

Finally got out there to pick Mom's car up. I did not start any shit with the service writer, just paid the diagnostic charge and drove the car out of the parking lot. Loaded it up and made the drive home.
Got it home and drove it down the road. The car is definitely down on power so it may in fact be turbo related. I'm hoping to have some time to look at it this weekend. Oh, and as far as the "soaked air filter" goes, there's no F-ing way it was ever soaked with water. The guys at that dealership are ass hats!

I just put a turbo on a 19 escape ecoboom 1.5 . try a boost solenoid first
I was taking a look at all of the boost tubes and sensors yesterday. There's a ton of crap on that little thing. LOL. I'll check out the solenoid for sure. Thanks!

I honestly didn't ask them for anything. I will get the VIN to you, I appreciate your help.
If they actually performed and charged you for a thorough diagnosis they should have scanned the system for codes and looked at history/ freeze frame (or lack thereof ) and that should have been made available to you by a prudent and honest service advisor if not I can still help a bit LMK
