So I was given a boost mobile heavy duty canopy with steel frame like 6 years ago, and have used the crap out of it at the river with no issues. I always fill a 5 gallon bucket with sand and water and tie it to the middle of the frame.

Well yesterday a Rouge wind gust got us. I grabbed the corner of the canopy and flew with it in the air until it tossed me into the rocks on the beach. Probably lifted me about 5 feet in the air and carried me almost 10 feet.

So canopy is now in the dumpster.

What should I buy? The boost mobile canopy was great but heavy AF.

Is there a canopy with a break away cover so if the wind kicks up it will just tear off?

Heres a pic of my leg after the incident. Tweaked my knee and ankle pretty good. too

If you’re in the Inland Empire there is an ez up place on the 215 between the 10 and 60. Sometimes they clearance out stuff.

I have this one, holds up pretty good in the wind because of the vent in the top that allows the wind to pass through.

Key is anchoring it. I've had shitty one and good ones. They will all fly away if you don't anchor them right.

I just buy the Coleman ones from Costco. I did return one that didn't hold up as I like, but their return policy is solid.

I know MotoCutz can make you a nice custom shade fly for about $600 or so. I am planning on trying one of those as they are more heavy duty and just plain cool, but it's hard to dump a bunch of coin into something that just gets destroyed.

They all fly but seen good success with weight bags filled with shot and used on the corner legs. One thing i did before was use the army mesh netting over an ez up frame lets wind blow through without lifting

I just buy the cheap ones on sale and toss em every year or two.

The EZ-Up brands are thousands of dollars for a good one.

So yeah. I'm cheap.

This wind just folded it sideways and twisted the frame up.

It lifted my 300lb ass, 5 gallon bucket of water with tie down (50lbs?) And yeeted us across the beach lol

When you strap it down to the ground, strap it further out. Not straight down. If that make sense.

I ditched the ez-up a few years ago after damaging two about a month apart. I switched to the Tommy Bahama umbrellas from Costco. I think they were like $30 and I have three of them. If it's just the wife and me, I break out one, if we have family line them up. They are super light, they screw into the sand and anchor well, and if the wind gets underneath it they just flex up and do not break. I have not lost one yet in 3-4 years.

i do the same thing, i buy 2 or 3 of the $89 specials at big 5 or the like, when one gets bent or beat up, dumpster it goes. i know a guy who spent 600 on one from EZup in custom colors to match his boat with the name on it. watched it tumble accross the beach into a folded mess one day in Havasu. he was almost in tears, it was the first time he set it up.

I wish they would make them out of the mesh material like my bimini top on my boat .

Ezup aluminum frame works for me. You could leave the corners barely folded over so the cover flops in a big gust.
I've seen one shoot straight up 50 feet in a dust devil on the shore (no dust), this was about five minuets after the gal unhooked her little dog from it.

I almost had an EZ-UP kill me once at Lake Powell. Big storm came up and the EZ-UP flew into my father-in-law's fifth wheel, making a hole in the side of it right by my head.

My daughter's club soccer team had custom canopy's made up. Not sure of what brand, but they were heavy. I was generally in charge of the canopy. Most of the other dad's had no clue how to set it up or break it down. They held up for years, in fact the roller bags that they were in fell apart and we had to get replacements. Coach kept them in the back of his pickup for years.

I bought one of the Coleman ones at Costco. While putting it together the first time, I pinched the fabric and it ripped. Exchanged it at Costco no problem, but have not used it yet. Will try it at Lake Powell this summer, but will remove the fabric if windy.

We have a cool cabana. Its only good for two people but its super light and compact. Has a single pole that is a spike and then four pockets in the fabric that you fill with sand to hold it down. Works very well.

If the wind is strong enough, nothing is going to keep a giant sail safely planted in the ground.

I think you’d have to rig something up with Velcro seams if you want it to be tear-away for strong gusts.

Interestingly, no one in TX seems to know what an EZ-Up is, everyone seems to call them gazebos. To me, EZ-Up is like Kleenex, that’s just what they’re called.

Same here, the two boats next to us at three dunes also did the same this weekend. All three of us had different pattern Tommy Bahamas.

Ez-up used to make mesh tops like a bimin. We had a 10x20 mesh top one that we used for years camping. After awhile it rusted out (it wasnt powder coated like they do them today) and it was a pain to setup since it no longer slid freely. We wanted to get a new frame to reuse the mesh top but Ez-up at the time had none of the rectangular ones anymore. It seems they’ve gone to the square only. And it doesn’t seem like they make mesh anymore. But honestly it’s been a long time since I checked.

Can you post your beaches ? Or Better Yet send Me a PM, we don’t want that info to get out….so I can get an accurate wind analysis ….

Id need to Know your Exact location where you perched on Lake Havasu then calculate the wind speed at each location, The Key Component to the Recommendations is your BEACH LOCATION - Some Beach’s are more windy than others… So PM me your Absolute BEST COVES and Beaches….👍

There is a ton of data that needs to be Inserted in order to get the CORRECT wind speed, Water Temp IS HUGE for My Chemical Engineering Students, we prefer at least 85 Degrees water temp - and a wind Temp in the 105-120. A correct analysis maybe take several weeks to Procure …

Then I’ll recommend you stop by the EZUp brand Store off the 10 or was it the 215 and what ever cross street ( corona Area ) or buy a cheapie one on sale for a $100 bucks

Thank you !

awaiting to data….

I picked up a cover pro at harbor freight for the boat for $50. Lightweight and packs up small. I have an ez-up I use at home, but it’s way too big and heavy for boat duty.

Just let me know if you plan on going Para Sailing again.
I have the perfect one for that, the easy ups don't do very well.
As for the canopies say seem to be hit-and-miss every time.
