Just got word that our neighborhood in the Keys is being evacuated, as a Chlorine tank truck overturned on the California side of the river. At this time it is just a precaution. When I learn more I will let you know.

From the Moovalya Keys HOA website. Did someone get their calendar screwed up?

MAY 14 EVACUATION DRILL:

The Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a comprehensive emergency evacuation drill on Wednesday, MAY 14. It involves a hypothetical haz-mat catastrophe at the gate, blocking that escape route. The Sheriff’s Office has asked for volunteer evacuees, including those who are mentally and physically challenged. They want to see how quickly they can evacuate people from the Keys via boats, and transport them upriver to the boat house where other agencies will take over their food and shelter needs. FEMA, Homeland Security, Red Cross and many other agencies, federal, state and local will be involved. On the morning of 5/14, authorities will be knocking on your doors, so if you do not wish to be involved, the Sheriff’s Office would appreciate your putting a note on your door to that effect. Those who wish to volunteer for the drill in advance should fill out an Actor Waiver Form which you can get from the Keys Business or General Managers, or from the Boating Office upriver.

What are the odds of that? A hazmat situation happens on the same day they scheduled a haz mat drill?

As for how something in CA affects the keys.. Chlorine is a poisenous gas.. Good wind guest carries it across the river and into the keys where the wind dies in between the houses down and now you have a problem for the residents.

It says Business Route 95. I think the actual 95 is open. Just Riverside Drive down by the water is closed.

Tanker truck overtuns near Parker

Thursday, May 8, 2008 10:23 AM MST

Local emergency services are on the scene of a tanker truck rollover on the California side of the Colorado River north of Parker. Sometime before 9 a.m., a tanker truck carrying a chlorine solution overturned on Parker Dam Road approximately five miles north of Earp.

Volunatry evacuations are under way in some areas along the river on the Arizona side. Evacuees are being sent to the Don T Pavilion at La Paz County Park. Traffic has been stopped on Riverside Drive, which was formerly known as Business Route 95.

As of 10 a.m., there had been no reports of injuries.

I am sure that the Calif. side is closed. I just spoke to Tow Truck Mark at Parker Towing. He said that they are planning on bringing in another compressed gas truck, and pumping as much of the clorine off as possible into the second tank truck. He said that they would then fill the damaged tank with some type of foam, before he could move the truck and tank out of the way. I would assume this will take some time.

If I learn anything about the road opening up, I will post it.

You are right. Unless they let you go over the Parker Dam (not gunna happen), you are not going to be able to get to BM Landing...

A truck carrying Hypochlorite Solution overturned and started leaking product near Riverland Resort on Parker Dam Road (California).

Safeguards call for 1/2 mile buffer zone, which is why a VOLUNTARY evacuation on the AZ side was established. The evacuation was discontinued at approx. 11:00 AM.

Currently AZ 95 and Riverside Drive are OPEN. Parker Dam Road on the CA side is CLOSED. Parker Dam WILL NOT be allowing trailers or oversize vehicles over the Dam.

The River is closed to all boating traffic 1/2 mile above and 1/2 mile below Riverland. This is expected to continue until the hazard is mitigated (cleaned up). HAZMAT and clean up teams are on scene and should be completed with the clean up some time later today.

The truck was delivering to MWD.

Wish it was a gas truck;):skull:fsakes

What are the long term effects of a chlorine spill?:hmm

With the amount that was spilled, probably about as much as pouring a few gallons of bleach on the ground.

The danger isn't in what's been spilled, but what MAY happen with the remaining product in the truck.

thanks for the info.

Do you know if the truck crashed and if so where? The reason I ask is our place is located on the only turn on the road. We have always thought that one day someone coming around the bin might jump into the trailer.(we have the last perm up river from the dock...next to the bathroom)

I just might. I'm having a hard time asking an old friend of mine that I don't even really talk to anymore. Haven't decided on it yet. Plus it would be good torture for the ole Tricklstein. :skull:skull
