Technically there is a horn blowing sequence that is supposed to be followed. It actually goes all the way back to England and the queen.

I feel his pain

I'm at minimum 1/4 mile from a RR crossing and about 1/2 mile from the station..

These horn are so F'n loud everything audio in the house gets drowned out and put on hold (I do like to have my windows open when the weather permits)

It's very common to get 15 second one blasts which I guess is within the restrictions.. but seems like forever when you're watching the tube or on the phone or just having a conversation with somebody

I get it... Safety First.... but these are all controlled crossings unlike the agriculture fields nearby

For years we had a guy that would lay on it at 2:15am every Wed, so fucking loud that sometimes I would find myself standing next to my bed. I figured he had an ex living in our neighborhood or he was just being a dick. I was afraid to complain as maybe he was doing it by the book and everyone else wasn't and I damn sure didn't want every train doing that

I bet that bastard doesn’t put his shopping cart back either.
Well AMR's SOP for code 3 driving is sirens on until you turn onto the street of the call, just because I was up didn't mean that everyone else needed to be up, I rarely turned my siren on after 11pm and I only put my carts back most of the time

Under the Train Horn Rule (49 CFR Part 222), locomotive engineers must begin to sound train horns at least 15 seconds, and no more than 20 seconds, in advance of all public grade crossings. Sounds like 10 seconds too long. Whatever, he's the one that chose to live next to the tracks.

The sequence isn’t supposed to be longer than 20 seconds and this guy goes 17 longer at 5 PM. Karen needs to stop being such a little bitch.
Karen shouldn’t have bought a condo by train tracks.

Is the same as buying a home by a pig farm then complaining it always smells like shit.

The simple answer is

Move away!

Have they fixed the tracks or are they still running slow with minimal trains.?

Thankfully riverside passed a rule a few years ago where they no longer sound the train horns at crossings. All crossings have the arms that come down and blinking red lights. Not sure what the point is of the horn anymore, unless there is something / someone on the tracks 🤷‍♂️

The engineer can't always guarantee the guards went down or that the lights are flashing would be my guess. The horn is redundancy

Is there a second crossing just past the one shown on the report? If so, the engineer is probably doing it right.

Is the train horn obnoxious, you betcha.

Was the train track there before this guy bought his condo, see above.

Further, the Train conductor probably knows what he’s doing.

More you cry, the more I toot.

Now which RDP member drives a train?!

He was chauffeuring a congressman around the valley today.

I don't know all the details of this crossing, but the CFR also says, "shall be repeated or prolonged until the locomotive occupies the crossing". So there's that.
EDIT: Just saw the video, not sure what the dude's trip is. Maybe he got in trouble for not whistling once and now he's captain overboard.

Those are quiet zones that the local municipality pays for. They have audible warning devices, but aren't nearly as far reaching as the train horns.

The conductor is busy sleeping, the engineer is sounding the horn. Unless they have PTC, then the computer is doing it.

We must blow for at minimum 15 seconds (or start at whistle board which is 1/4 mile from crossing) and there is writing in regards to not to exceed 20 seconds, however there’s no actual rule to stop us from blowing the whistle all we want even in a “whistle ordinance” (some call quiet zone). There’s many reasons to blow extra, and my honest assumption would be one of two things, he’s had one/or more fatalities at that location or he’s gotten in trouble at that location or others so makes sure not to ever not blow enough. Also sounds more like he hits the sequencer button.

The back of my friends house is right at 60' from the tracks. I've yet to hear them complain about the train. The only complaint they have is neighbors guests parking in front of their garage.

That intersection is super busy, especially on a weekend. I can totally see why he hangs on the horn longer than normal.

It’s a federal process where the application is 29 pages long and must be submitted and approved from the city/state/feds for every single crossing. It’s 100% a federally regulated rule that the state or city can not alter without federal approval…

My dad is retired BNSF 33 years. They have this problem in Flagstaff. Residents get pissed but the Railroad will also punish, fire, etc for not blowing the horn long enough so some guys just blow that shit all the way through town. People will complain and say they need to blow less but If there is an incident someone will say they didn’t blow it long enough and a guy loses his job.

My co-worker lives west of these tracks. pedestrians hit by train and vehicles on the tracks at crossings are an issue there all the time. Last time I was at his house for a weekend of debauchery there was a pedestrian hit by a train lol

It’s been at least 8 years probably closer to 12 that Flagstaff is a quiet zone, Fanning and Steve’s have there own horns and then Ponderosa Beaver and San Francisco are just gates and lights, we still have to ring the bell, there’s still 8-10 fatalities a year however. Who is your father?

Jerry really let me down.. I'm mean, he's wearing a shark tooth neckless, Cabela's shirt.. Could've been a legend with that attire... But he ended up a sniveler.. So sad

Buddy lived in downtown Sacramento and had tracks right behind his house. I mean you could almost touch the train off his back deck being he was on the 2nd floor. Sunday freight train would roll out early and toot at each crossing, but it had become a bit of a feud with my buddy and he would lay on the horn for the H street crossing just for him. I was over there after a long night one morning and as the train approached he got out his paintball gun. Was entertaining to watch, but I left shortly after assuming the cops would be there in a few minutes. They never showed, but the following Sunday the conductor had also came prepared with a paintball gun and the two exchanged fire as he passed. The next Sunday my buddy had a breakfast sandwich ready on a pole in which he handed the conductor while flying a white flag. 🤣
