Whats up with my dogs chewing/eating wood?
I have a one year old Canekorso and a n 8 month old boxer and they love wood. Steal it from my firewood pile all the time. Just went outside and the wind took down a good sized branch and these two are going to town LOL

HOLY SHIT, RIGHT? My 4y/o lab has been doing it since he was around 10 weeks old. Some wood, he just crunches up and leaves a mess, some he eats, some he eats so much of that he'll throw it all up in his crate the next morning.

I'm thankful though, that he's not a shit eater!

Puppies are more likely to chew on wood. They chew on wood for a couple of reasons such as, instinct of sharpening their teeth or they are bored or want the mental stimulation they get out of chewing. I have a three-year-old husky and she loves to grab my wood that I use to smoke food with as well a small branches and twigs. Luckily she has never gone after gates, fences, siding, or furniture or we would have a problem.

Lets see what Chat GPT Says
Dogs often look for wood to chew on due to a combination of natural instincts, behavioral tendencies, and possible underlying needs or issues. Here are some common reasons:

  1. Teething (Puppies): Puppies chew on objects, including wood, to soothe their gums and alleviate the discomfort of teething.
  2. Natural Chewing Instinct: Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs. It helps keep their teeth clean and their jaws strong.
  3. Boredom or Anxiety: If your dog doesn’t have enough mental or physical stimulation, they might chew wood as a way to relieve boredom or stress.
  4. Curiosity or Exploration: Dogs explore the world with their mouths. Wood is a common material in their environment and might seem interesting to them.
  5. Nutritional Deficiency: Some dogs chew on wood or other non-food items (a condition called pica) due to a lack of specific nutrients in their diet.
  6. Attracted by the Texture or Smell: Wood often has an appealing texture for chewing, and certain types of wood might carry scents that intrigue your dog.
  7. Lack of Appropriate Chewing Alternatives: If your dog doesn’t have suitable chew toys, they might turn to wood as an alternative.

How to Address It:

  • Provide Chew Toys: Offer safe, durable chew toys designed for dogs to satisfy their chewing needs.
  • Supervise and Redirect: When you catch your dog chewing wood, redirect them to an appropriate toy and praise them for chewing the correct item.
  • Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Ensure your dog gets enough physical activity and mental engagement to reduce boredom.
  • Limit Access to Wood: Remove or restrict access to wood items your dog might chew, such as firewood or wooden furniture.
  • Check Their Diet: Ensure their diet is well-balanced and provides all necessary nutrients.
  • Consult a Vet: If the behavior is excessive or new, consult a veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical or behavioral issues.
It’s important to address this habit because chewing wood can be harmful. Splinters can cause mouth injuries or become lodged in their digestive tract, potentially requiring medical attention.

Olive loves wood . But she has never gone after furniture . She also love pinecones . We just had artificial turf put in in our back yard . Olive was trying to chew on the edeges . We went out of town for 4 days last week . I was worried she would chew up the turf since the dogs would be in the backyard all day from 7:00 AM till 5:00PM . Our neighbor feeds them in the morning and after she gets home from work . Then she lets them in later in the evening to sleep in the house for the night . Anyways I cut up 10pcs of 2X4's 12in long and spread them all over the area of the turf . When we got back they were all chewed up into pcs all over the turf . But she didn't eat it .🤣

Max chews on the whole fucking tree. If you yell "GET IT"....he'll find a tree and fuck it all up. We have an orange tree that we had to zip tie plastic shit around so he doesn't kill it. If he gets excited, he tries to eat the tree. Nervous?...he tries to eat the tree. We had a small apricot tree that he tore outta the ground and left in the driveway for me.

I have two Chihuahuas, one eats sticks the other eats her own shit. I'll take the mess of the sticks all day long! The one that eats shit is tiny and she has a knack for going out through the doggie door, taking a shit, eating it, coming back in without anyone knowing and then jumping on you and shoving her tongue so far up your nostril it touches your brain all before you realize what has just happened, and by that point it is too late.🤢🤮🤮🤮

I looked out back once and noticed my dog in the poop position. A minute later I looked and he was still at it with a foot long turd dangling.

I went out to see what was going on and he was shitting my wife's panty hose. 😁

I used to make sure the was wood for my Rott mix. People got upset I was giving him wood.
“He’s eating the fucking gate! What the difference?”
Smartest mellowest dog I’ve ever seen. Come home and he’s laying on the couch.
WTF he figured out how to open the back door.
Recycling all over. He figured out how to open the 1 liter soda bottles and get the left over soda out.
Did give 2 shits about a cat, but a Raccoon, holy crap he’d go beast mode.
