Shit...I was three years old....my dad had a 42' converted landing craft (clipper bow, deck, and cabin added on) and ran a (bootleg) charter boat out of Wilmington, Ca.
My addiction to River boats started the first time I saw a Campbell in the channel at Havasu.

I would if I could find it. Mom showed it to me a couple of years ago in an old box. Can't find it now. :(

My dad was a CWO4 Bosn in the Navy. He was in charge of the Crash Boats at Alameda NAS when I was 5. I used to go down to the boat house at least once (sometimes more) a week and he would finish up his paperwork, have one of his enlisted guys throw off the lines and we would take one of the crash boats out for an hour or two! As soon as we were away from the pilings...I had the helm! The ol man would have a few beers and sit in the seat on the port side and call out the turns. The SanFrancisco or Oakland Bay or whatever it was, was MINE!!! I don't remember how long the boats were, but if I had to guess, I'd say 40ft+. I learned about the channel marker bouys, right of way, turning into the swell...all while I was in Kindergarten!

My dad's buddy had a sailboat with a Zodiac with a 10 HP whacka. He would let me take it so I would stop bothering the adults.

I cruised the sum-bitch up and down the channel at Pete's Harbor in Redwood City, CA until it was almost out of gas. Good times.:beer

I let my son idle my boat at the lake when there is no one around (big lake) He has to stand on the seat to see and drives like a drunk but he has fun.:D

About 1956, Lake Elsinore ( 2 lane road, one in each direction, thru the orange groves, now the 91 fwy/ I 15 out of corona ) Our dad's just finished the 1st "inboard" from a Glenn L kit. The Hughes boy's took Pop Hughes's 8 foot skiff with a Johnson 12 HP outboard and we skied behind that thing while "the grownups" messed with the big bad inboard, "The Madam Queen" :D

My dad has always had boats. His first was a Mandella long deck. so I am not sure the first one I rode in I do remember driving his 78 twin turbo Schiada when I was 7. He ruined me for any other boat from a cvery young age.

Like most everyone it started with the whole sitting on someone's lap behind the wheel. My Grandpa would let me drive our whaler (still have), in Huntington Harbour when I was about 2-3 years old, didn't get to drive it by myself until I was 12. But when I was 9 I got a 12' Avon Inflatable w/ 5hp Mariner outboard, that I was able to drive around myself.

Dad used to race/hotrod cars in high school. He built a plywood boat and was trying to figure out the braking sysem...when an old guy offered to help him...and let him take his 8" hydro around puddingstone. He quickly understood that a braking sysem was...stupid. He struck a friendship with the old guy, got into racing boats (marathon outboards) in the early 60's.

I'm sure I was pointing one of his boats at the dock at an early age. What I really remember was the first time he let me pull a skier. 16' Raysoncraft with a 115 merc. Neat light boat that would jump outta the water and turn on a dime.

My Grandpa would take us out on the river in his 1978 21ft Manta Ray (I think is was a copy of a Spectre or something very similar) . It had a Hardin Marine 454 and an ungodly Stern Power outdrive.

I guess my fascination started after I was hired as a tour guide at Disneyland's Jungle boat Cruise.

I carry an elephant gun while boating on Havasu in case of an attack.

I dont remember the exact age but it was behind my grandpa's HEAVY ass Spectra (was told it was one of the first 5 Spectra 20's out of the mold) in his lap when I could barely see over the bow. The thing was about that boat though was it would NOT turn right. lol! So he always had to reach out and help me turn it. Since then Ive been hooked.

I remember my Dad helping my Mom get the steering wheel through her vagina, up to her uterus so I could do a few hot laps in my second trimester of mitosis.

I think your mom & dad went a little too far in and caused a little damage which now explains a lot.:D:beer

16' "Big Jon" jon boat in the Kenai River in Alaska. I was 16 and we took the boat (Dads) without him knowing. (He was TDY somewhere) I had rode in it alot, it had a Volkswagen airboat assembly previously, but had a 40 HP short shaft Johnson when we took it. We camped on the bank of the river for a week, getting stoned and catching Kings. It was different then, very few people. (1977 or so)
After a week the State Troopers came by in their boat and told us Dad had reported it stolen and wanted us arrested.
We went home with a bunch of king salmon and we were forgiven.
He kind of gave me the boat after that.

First fast boat was a 76 Sanger Hydro, A friend owned it. I was a machinist and My buddies and I raced cars in super gas and super street. I drove that sanger one day at Big Lake, north of Anchorage. BNAG!!
Sold the car that week and bought a Miller. That was 1992.
That is the main reason I had to have the Sanger I just bought.

I was about 6 or 7 and got to drive under the London Bridge. Must have been '76 or '77 because we moved to Oregon in March of '78. Couldn't have been completed for more than a year or two. When did they finish the channel/bridge?

Anyway, we went back and forth, all of us kids got to drive under it. I remember my little brother asking if it was going to fall down. :thumbsup
