As much as I believe in total freedom, I honestly would support 2 years mandatory military service for the youth of America at this point..

There should be an aptitude test first. Do you think your kids should go? I'd wager yours and mine would be instructors not participants.

I'm guessing you didn't serve 🤔

You are correct. My reference is a comparison to today's 18 year old "adults" in general.

The current military I can only speculate on from what I've heard through friends and family.

Unless you enter some special ROTC or Preparatory Academy, everybody starts with those aptitude tests, followed immediately by basic training.
What the aptitude tests reveal in addition to intelligence is how that intelligence can be best utilized by whatever branch you're serving in. In other words, in general, what happens following basic training, in terms of continuing education, training or assignment.

Coddling and granting special treatment to the brightest, won't make them better adults. They, just like the dumb-asses, need to be toughened up, learn the discipline of taking and following orders, and how to function in a team environment.

Maybe for wayward kids but otherwise a complete waste of 2 years imo.

@Taboma is pretty much right with the tests. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is an interesting test. It's about the amount of questions you can answer correctly in the time given. Broad range, not much time per segment. My daughter's SAT scores were great, her ASVAB scores were not as flattering.

I don't know about 2 years as a soldier...I don't know if that would make for the best force either. I wouldn't be opposed to two or more years in the Guard, doing things stateside. Mostly the same gear and training, but no out of country deployment (if things go well). Use that group instead of FEMA for things here, with better oversight and training.

I disagree. Military service teaches discipline, work ethic and love for country which is lacking in today's generation.

You just described a parents role, not a governments.

Unfortunately not all parent's are doing it. Trump speech, 40% of high schools in Baltimore dont have a single student than can do basic math.

Well then some of the RDP people's just flap jawing here daily aren't to old to join the Air National Guard --- ages 17-41 🤣

It's all shit's and giggles until your reserve unit gets activated for reals.

I agree and my two daughters are proof of that. Oldest is graduating in May from UT with a civil engineering degree and already secured a job in DallasFtWorth for big bucks and full benefits. Youngest is finishing her first year at Penn state Pre-Med. My wife and I raised them on the premise that we are their parents not their friends. We have a great relationship with both of them and they are succeeding in life.

What do you propose we as a country do with the majority of our youth in this country that don't want to work, are lacking in education and or skills and are generally lost in life? My personal opinion it should be mandatory for kids once they turn 18 to do one of the following. Get a 2 year AA degree, serve and finish a 2 year apprenticeship in the trades, serve in the military for 2 years or another government entity like the forest service.

Sadly, I'm too old to be seen as useful by my government, but still apparently a risk of being a problem.

It is sad however, not just the lack of discipline and respect the youth have. What is sadder to me, there is no way a 48yo with spinal surgeries should be in better physical condition than any normal high schooler...and I'm in shit shape.

I like the idea of the 2 year degree, trade or service. The service can get you a head start on knowledge for a degree or trade if you're undecided as well. I think the country is headed towards a lot of changes, some good, some bad, but for the most part, the stagnation is ending.
