Whats the difference between a red sticker and a green sticker?

I am gonna buy the kids dirt bikes and found out some have red some have green....WTF??? I need two crf150's. Looked at a 150r red sticker, 150f green. Need a 250 for the oldest kid, do they make one that is not all race? We just wanna do some trail riding. Any recommendations on nice trail bikes that wont break my wallet? I'm gonna have to find two bigger bikes for me n momma too.

Go to DMV site and learn......I think Green is year around use and red is limited to partial season, just don't recall which season....

Green can be ridden year round. Red has restrictions as to when you can ride. If you can get a green sticker go with that.

Red stickers limit ur riding areas. Greens u can ride anywhere. Red stickers are for 2 strokes also. Thats what I know. Forest trails = no red stickers. Glamis u can ride anything.

The reds you can't ride in certain areas during mostly summer months when emissions are worse. For us So Cal (middle of the winter)desert dorks it hasn't seemed to make any real difference.

so for the times I would ride, red sticker would work fine. Another question is, we like to ride the big bear area (jeep trails). Can a red sticker bike ride around up there?

Last time I checked california red sticker was only limited to a few months and as ziggy said they were the hottest months.

If you want to expand to track riding you don't need any sticker

I would think Red sticker is probably ok in any "legal OHV" use area this time of year.

As far as I know the red sticker can't be used during the months from May to August. I wasn't aware of the no forest trails deal, so I would check into that if you want to ride big bear. They all used to be green, don't know which year they switched out, but the 4 strokes were obviously involved, as well as the 2 strokes at some point. :thumbsdown

After a certain year, we have a 97 KTM 360 (2 stroke) and it is green sticker. I just don't remember what year the cutoff is.

I think it was around 96 when they implemented the Red Sticker.

I haven't owned a bike for a while, so things may have changed...But when they came out with the Red Sticker it meant you couldn't ride trails, OHV, Forest Last, etc... You could only ride in an official enduro race or on the MX track. It was mostly for 2 strokes, but when the YZ 400 came out it was 50/50 whether you would get a green sticker or a red sticker. The non MXers that got a red sticker were pissed. Eventually they all started getting green stickers.

My YZ 450 (2005) is red stickered. i ride it out in octillo wells all winter but cant ride it thru the summer months. it has to do with the type of exhaust.
I.E. no spark arrester on it.

2003.

The way I see it is that the months that Red Stickers are prohibited, you should be on a boat.

The bought a new bike in 98. I wanted a YZ400, but didn't buy because other's I know had gotten a Red Sticker for theirs. I ended up buying an XR400 and modded it up the best I could for both trail and MX track.

its not just the spark arrester deal. by law you have to have a spark arrester on any bike riden in the desert OHV areas but a red sticker bike can only be ridin in the winter months as mentioned. putting a spark arrester on a red sticker bike will not make it legal in the off season. in general if it has a kickstand and lights it will qualify for a green sticker and no lights will usally be a red sticker bike. obviously there are exceptions but in general this applies. The only place in CA that you dont need a spark arrester by law is on a closed competition course like the tracks.

You got a set of black spokes hangin on there?

New rim. The current rim has a small crack. Holds air but needs to be replaced. It will be done before buyer takes delivery. No spokes on that rim, need to drop the bike off at a shop and have it assembled.

If you go to Arizona you can get the out of state sticker they don't care what you ride where and it is for all areas all seasons. I used this to ride my banshees up at fawnskin and down crab flats etc. They honor the stickers out of Arizona.

I think it was with 98 models....I bought the last year a Banshee could be green stickered(97). Or it could have been by calender year but not sure.

Ok here is the list I made so far to purchase...what are your opinions?

Me CRF250R Red sticker
Wife CRF150F Green sticker (she doesn't ride much and just wants to putt around)
13 yr old boy CRF150R Red Sticker
12 yr old girl DRZ125L Green sticker (girl is just like her mom, wants to ride but not aggressive)
10 yr old boy CRF150R Red sticker

the 10 yr old is the tuff one. He is too big for some bikes and too small for others, I figure I would put a throttle restrictor or something on the 150. He has sat on one at the dealer and CAN touch the ground with both feet.:thumbsup

Buy the bikes you want and ride them when you want regardless of the sticker.

The Green Sticker indicates vehicles allowed to operate on public lands open to motor vehicles all year. The Red Sticker is issued to motorcycles and ATVs model year 2003 through 2021 that do not meet the emission standards established by the California Air Resources Board (ARB).
Pretty sure he’s got this handled by now.
