There is something strange about that straight coming back into the harbor running along the seawall that cause blow overs. There have been many over the years in that exact spot.

Damn that sucks, but glad they are ok. I’m surprised that no one has developed a Gurney flap ( if you will.. ) on the front of the boat that deploys if the boat exceeds a certain angle of attack. A large panel with electric or hydraulic rams that would act as an aileron or control surface. Computing power would make this pretty simple.

The turbine boat from Dubai I think had some sort of avionics type stuff to keep the bow in check. I remember something about that in the video from LOTTO.

Running #6 out drives with a single main rudder? I don’t see much offshore racing, is this a common set up with those drives?

It was insured

😁

Glad the crew is OK.
I am not sure of that… Yes I know who the sponsor is…

But typically in the “racing” arena, you cant insure the item thats being raced, (plane, boat, nascar, drag car, etc etc)
Maybe thats was just the old days and times have changed.

Even if you can insure, I cant imagine what the rates are? 33% of the replacement value / year? Or more???
Then factor in a deductible… LOL…

Most of Class 1 runs fixed trimmable BPM drives with a rudder. X insurance is one of if not the only 1 that run #6 drives with no skeg & a rudder

Interesting. When I was looking at the picture I thought the skeg had snapped off too clean. There was no skeg makes more sense.

The way I understand, I'm NO EXPERT, is the #6/8 drives in this racing application are basically a crash box that trims up or down & that's about it.

Well the speed they go and the stresses of turning a big boat probably are too much for gimbaled drives and skegs. So makes sense they lock them down to trim only and let a big ol rudder at the farthest point aft do the turning duties.

You're not wrong. Racing insurance is history. I know in the late 90's, IndyCar teams could still get crash damage insurance. It was expensive, but could pay off. That began to disappear after 2000.

To give you an idea of the exposure insurers had, in 2004 during Friday practice for a Sunday race at Chicagoland Speedway, a 5/8" NAS bolt on the right rear upright broke on our car as it entered turn four at an estimated 209 MPH. A photographer actually got a shot of the broken bolt the instant it snapped and flew into the air. The driver was unhurt, but the car certainly was.

We stripped the car down to the tub in the garage, and there were literally just a few dozen good parts removed. The tub had to be shipped back to Dallara in Italy for repair. It cost the team over $400,000, and that was 20 years ago with Honda paying for the destroyed engine.
