Delta IV heavy rocket expected to launch from Vandenberg Friday — if weather cooperates

BY JANENE SCULLY
Updated December 06, 2018 11:29 AM

A behemoth Delta IV Heavy rocket continues marching toward liftoff Friday night from Vandenberg Air Force Base, but the launch team is keeping a close eye on the weather.

The United Launch Alliance booster, which stands some 233 feet tall, will aim for departure at 8:19 p.m. from Space Launch Complex-6 on South Base.

Since the rocket will deliver cargo for the National Reconnaissance Office — the mission is dubbed NROL-71 — the actual launch window remains top secret, but is not expected to extend beyond 9:38 p.m.

“We are proud to launch this critical payload in support of our nation’s national security mission,” said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of government and commercial programs. “As the nation’s premiere launch provider, the teams have worked diligently to ensure continued mission success, delivering our customer’s payloads to the precise orbits requested.

Thanks for the heads up. We have been spoiled by the SpaceX pregame and commentary. Could be neat to see if the trajectory in the video is accurate. Should be clear tonight.

If someone could post pics if they see it, I'd appreciate it. Some of them we can see way the hell out here, some we can't. This is one of the "Crowd Pleasers", the heavies. We can usually see them once they hit the altitude when sunlight hits them...probably a big science term. Weather may not clear up here in time though.

Intimately familiar design and fab of the CBC LOX and LH2 main feedlines as well as the POGO, recirc and vent lines for D4 Heavy + variants. Atlas too. Totally cool hardware - mechanical guys salivate at this stuff.

Awesome.

I helped design the main combustion chamber (MCC), Main Injector, Gas generator (GG) and Ablative nozzle in the combustion devices development group.
I did the design for the 2 sets of outriggers that are used to gimbal the engine also. 3" diameter 4130 steel 3/8 wall tubing. Machined after welding on a Vertical Turret Machine.
I worked 65 hours a week for about 3 years ('97-2000) on the original RS-68 then came back in '07 for the RS-68A upgrade then moved over to the J-2X upper stage MCC and Nozzle for the SLS program till Nov '09.

8:19pm Pacific Time?
Yes sir.

I use to do the final machining on that rocket nozzle (seen @ 1:40 in this video) from the onset of that program...

VTL? I can't remember if it was machined on a Vertical Turret Lathe?

I remember we did some ablation tests to figure out if we had enough material on the inside. We drilled some inspection holes to measure depth in key areas.
Kind of like the holes on a pair of drag slicks to see how much rubber is left.

Worked at HB during development of Delta 3 and 4 large composite assy before they moved it all to Mississippi. Went down there and trained the new hires on how to laminate all the different components

I’m working the launch tonight and will get a video posted up if I’m able. Pretty cool that there are members on here that have had a hand in making the Delta IV a success. I work for ULA at Cape Canaveral but travel out here to Vandenberg to support most missions.

Most of the machining was done on (G&L's) VTL and 5 Axis Horizontal Boring Mill. Lots of different types of materials used in the final nozzle assy...

Yes sir.

Its a much simpler design than brazing explosively formed tapered tubes into manifolds for the regen cooled types like RS-25, J2-X and RL10
I also worked on the braze tooling for the J-2X nozzle.

5:04 p.m. PST (8:04 p.m. EST; 0104 UTC) -- Delay
This is Delta Launch Control at T-minus 4 hours, 15 minutes and holding. Launch Director Lou Mangieri has confirmed that we will not continue with the NROL-71 launch activities today.

The team will set for a 24-hour countdown recycle to make another launch attempt tomorrow.

Launch Notes: This will be 132nd mission for United Launch Alliance and ULA's second Delta IV Heavy launch in less than four months. It is the 382nd Delta launch since 1960, the 38th for a Delta IV rocket since 2002 and the 11th Delta IV Heavy.

Launch Updates: To keep up to speed with updates to the launch countdown, dial the ULA launch hotline at 1-877-852-4321 or join the conversation at www.facebook.com/ulalaunch,

This rocket will be powered by the 58-60th RS-68 engine.

(Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., Dec. 7, 2018) – The launch of a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy carrying the NROL-71 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office was scrubbed today due to an issue with a redundant communication link between the control center and the launch site.

The team is prepping for a 24-hour turn around on Saturday, Dec. 8, from Space Launch Complex 6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base. The forecast shows a 60 percent chance of favorable weather conditions for launch. The launch time is 8:06 p.m. PT.

That's Badass! Shout out to Sacramento's Aerojet Rocketdyne Corp of Rancho Cordova, CA for their contributions to US Space Program. Though the Power linemen crews I worked with had nothing to do with building rockets, there was always an extra level of pride we felt and put into our work on AJ's electrical power infrastructure.

That was the falcon 9 from the other day that failed to land correctly.A pump failed and they aborted the landing so as not to wreck the landing ship and rocket so in the water it went.

I looked on YouTube for a live launch and that's what came up. Even said live on it!

Very confusing. I'm happy somebody posted the Right link!
