Commander Boats Business Update

2/1/2011

We are addressing this forum, as one of our valued customers just brought the reports on this thread to our attention.

It is important that we present this information to our loyal customers and interested patrons, whom we credit the Commander Boats' rise to the top of the custom boat industry.

At the present time, we are running a low-cost and low-profile operation, in keeping with the challenging economic times. We expect to emerge out this contracted mode of operation, once the economy affords better opportunities.

Following are the relevant facts in this context:
I. We did NOT go out of business.
More importantly, Commander Boats did not cease its operations even for a single
day.
We undertook a drastic downsizing of our operations, in keeping with the
economy.
II. We closed our sales showroom in Corona, off 91 FWY, before the start of the
year 2008 and we moved out of the Perris Factory location in April 2008.
III. Following are the relevant details, concerning our relocation and downsizing:
1. Our sales and business office is presently located at 1011 East 3rd Street,
Corona, CA 92505. We are also performing service work at this location.
2. We have an additional service and storage facility in Perris, at a different location.
3. We are storing our molds at another location, near the Corona showroom.
4. We are still contemplating to consolidate the operations at one location, when
we have the opportunity to do so.

Thus, we are trying to piece this puzzle together, as the economy would permit.

Thank you.

Sy

Nice 3rd party hersay.

Like I said Bullshit.

I towed my buddies boat to SY myself. So I have 1st hand knowledge unlike you...seems that anything posted on a board is some kind of proof, wrong!

I tell you what. If I get SY to post again that they never went out of business would that be proof
for you?

Notice your 2nd hand info was 3years before SY made his statement.

I still get a call from Sy every two or three months -- he says he is at his office (most likely in Corona) and wants to know what's going on in the local boating industry. Not sure if he's planning a comeback but he's still interested in what's going on. I think he still has some of his original molds, just not sure which ones.

Didn't a thread appear sometime back that Sy's molds (blanks/plugs) were sitting stored or abandon out in the open in a seedy, weedy lot someplace and some of them were bought up or stolen?
Credible people that knew what they were looking at confirmed they were Commander.

I seem to recall that because Danny was showing interest in buying one model.

If they are abandoned y buy them?

Commander seems to be almost as mysterious as Cole was.
Almost.

Most that dealt with Sy had a fuck story experience at some point in purchase or ownership if they even took delivery. Some were OK.

Yeah,, it's all starting to come back now,,,,

Sy was building his last sale with money floated from his next sale went the tales.
A few board members were furious.

http://www.commanderboats.com/new.html

It has a different phone # and an explaination about downsizing.

I just got off the phone with SY. He says one new boat ready to deliver and one in the mold. He said he will come and post an update here.

This is from Facebook: Commander Boats will be the official boat sponsor for the upcoming film Highway to Havasu Official. I will cameo a long with three other Commanders in the movie, one of the three will be featured as the main boat threw the whole movie. We start filming in march we will keep you posted. This is going to be a big year for Commander, in this month a lone we already have to brand new 2015 custom 2800 Party decks on order and we're currently building. Two custom ordered boats in the 1st month of the this year. We're off to a good start. Stay tuned for all of the updates.
Our Production Coordinator Mike Anderson locked down Commander Boats today as our official boat sponsor for the film! We are so excited to have their gorgeous boats a part of this project!!

I don't understand. If a boat company has such a bad reputation, and a history of bad build quality, why reopen under the same company? Why not start a new company and build under a new philosophy?

From another thread:hmm....

"As we had posted earlier, Commander Boats has been NEVER stopped doing business, Commander has been in business since 1981 and under the current ownership since January 1988.

2015 is going to be a big year for Commander, in January alone, we started building activities on two new 2015 custom 2800 Party Deck boats, for our customers. Our first 2800 is presently in the mold. The second one will be going in the mold within two weeks, the gelcoater has already been given the boat graphics for it.
We are extremely thankful to the Commander Boats' patrons and the Commander family for having strongly supported us all long and having unflinchingly promoted Commander Boats in the past.

Commander family will be happy to note that Commander Boats will be the official boat sponsor for the upcoming film Highway to Havasu Official. Three Commanders will be filmed and one of the three will be featured as the main boat throughout the movie. We start filming in March.

Please feel free to contact Sy or Steve, if you have any questions or like to get more information."

Yep, crystal clear. They are back in business.

Like most Mfg's they were in a kind of state of hibernation. They weren't "active" as in employees and payroll, but they were ready to build a boat if an order came in.

Dana
Carrera

And several other Mfg's are either in or pulling out of that same status right now.

Here the problem is see... I'm a buyer right now, like in the next few weeks. There is zero chance I buy one of the boats from these manufactures just waiting. Buy the boat have issues and they are back in hibernation. Tough way to to biz, I know it's the only option right now, but as a buyer I wouldn't do it even at 25% less than the other guys.

A Industry clearly driven by the Economy! Wonder if these guy's have full time jobs to keep them afloat when things get ugly? Are most owners financially set and do this as a hobby. I hear how Bob is always at Eliminator where one would think he could retire with all the builds they got going on and the prices Shueman posts. LOL

While I'm all for conversation on the boards this thread seems ridiculous to me.. Wouldn't it just be easier to call commander and ask? Lol.

I'm glad it got Sy on RDP though. At least now those that are wondering if he is still around know that he is and available to build boats.

Any free advertising is good advertising.

If I remember correctly, when I was looking at boats in 1994, Commander seemed to have easier financing connections. I thought their jet boats were kickass. Lots of billet. By that time, not to many builders were interested in the spec high performance jet boat market. :cool

The economy is growing and at some point in the future you will see the Baby Boomers retiring and buying Boats. Also people with more disposable income. If the Boat Manufacturers can hang around a little longer it may be good times again.

Yes, Commander Boats is in business and is doing well!
Thanks to Commander Boats' loyal patrons!!

As we posted on this forum in the past, Commander NEVER went out of business.

We are very appreciative and thankful of our patrons and the Commander family at large. Your strong support makes it all happen and your continually promoting the Commander is what makes it the BEST in the custom boat industry.

Commander Boats' patrons would like to know that Commander will be the official boat sponsor for the upcoming film Highway to Havasu Official. Three Commanders will be filmed. One of the three Commander Boats will be featured as the main boat throughout the movie. We start filming in March. Yes, this comes at the heels of Commander's active participation in the remake of Piranha.

Um, that's me. And a bunch of people I know. Already own a 2001 35 Nordic. Couldn't buy one
now if I wanted.

Retirement will come in the next 10 years. All I will have is social security for income. Less
than half a million in real estates and assets.

Me and many of my kind sure won't be buying high dollar boats in retirement. Most retirees won't
even have it as good as I do.

Since WWII the U.S. has experienced a recession, one every 4.5 years on average. No president in the last 100 years has left office without passing on another recession. They very in strength. Obama will be no different from the other presidents before him. His economic policies however will result in a massive recession when his bubble bursts. Retirement incomes are at a historic low for the majority of the baby boomers. They won't be buying toys.

Not trying to speak to individual situations.

I am saying the downside for Boat Manufacturers is probably behind them and the future is brighter.

? In 2013, the RV industry shipped 321,127 units, a gain of 12.4% over the previous year. This was nearly double the total in 2009, and marked the fourth consecutive year of growth since the end of U.S. recession.

? Shipments history. In 2012, RV manufacturers shipped 285,749 units, an increase of 13.3% from 2011, and the highest total since 2007. In 2011, manufacturers shipped 252,300 units, an increase of 4.1% from 2010. 2010 shipments reached 242,300 units, an increase of 46.2% from 2009. 2009 shipments totaled 165,700 units; down 30.1% from 2008 because of the economic downturn economists have dubbed the Great Recession. Manufacturers shipped 237,000 units in 2008, down 32.9% from 2007 due to the recession. For a historical chart showing RV shipments by year, go to: RVIA Historical Glance.

Boat Sales Ride a Rising Tide into 2015
U.S. recreational boating industry estimates new powerboat sales up 7-8 percent last year; Sales expected to increase another 5 percent in 2015 as boat shows open nationwide

CHICAGO (January 8, 2015) With the start of a New Year, the U.S. recreational boating industry is estimating 2014 will see a 7-8 percent* increase in sales of new powerboats with continued growth of an additional 5 percent in 2015, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). This is the industry's third consecutive year of steady growth coming out of the recession.

In addition, total 2014 retail expenditures which include retail spending on boats, engines, marine accessories and services?are expected to see increases by as much as 5 percent, which would eclipse 2007, one of the healthiest pre-recession years for the industry. In 2014, the strongest sales came from new ski/wakeboard boats, pontoon boats, aluminum fishing boats, fiberglass runabouts and personal watercraft. Sales of larger cruising boats also started to see an uptick.

An improved economy with GDP projected to grow 3 percent, an improving housing market, a stronger job market, increasing consumer confidence and a multi-year low on fuel prices have bolstered people?s financial outlook, which bodes well for new boat sales, said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. Should these economic indicators remain positive, we anticipate sales growth of new boats to continue over the next three years.

Hi River Royal,
Commander Boats was NEVER out-of-business or in hibernation.
We have been building boats all along, although at a SLOW pace, for a few years in the recent past.
Our Customers have always liked us. No doubt, there have been a few whom we could not get in our corner. No business can bet 100%, but we can confidently claim to better than most and a long list our happy customers are the living proof.

Every industry was saying the same thing going into 08. Sales in everything looked to be positive and growing. Its in industry associations best interest to post positive info. I've never met a rich economist or industry analysts.

Just a couple of comments -- the RV industry has recovered at a much faster and more robust rate since the "big" recession compared to the recreational boating industry. According to industry stats, the market for new RV sales is within about 8 to 10% of what it was ten years ago. Conversely, the boat industry is still 40 to 45% down from its peak years -- we've still got a long way to go. As for Thom Dammrich, president of NMMA, he's a great cheerleader and is doing his job, and he's right, new boat sales are slowly showing signs of improvement but not in the southwest market. And I whole heartedly concur with Grads -- Bob Leach has got to be the most determined and hardest working guy in the boat business -- the past 7-8 years have had to be a living hell.

Not sure how the RV and boat industry is putting lipstick on its economic pig, like the government does. But I know this, my wife works at the
biggest boat dealer in the Tucson area. There is no money to loan on big discretionary purchases like boats. You have to have an outstanding
credit rating and pretty much secure any loan yourself, if you're lucky. Not a recipe for great growth. Lots of service business but boat sales
are pretty slow.

As for me if I hear something from the mainstream media pertaining to anything economic I don't believe it. If I hear it in the alternative media
I believe it even less. If I hear it in both media, something is genuinely happening but who knows what exactly.

Grads being a douche as always. Why was he let back again?

Originally to discuss his friends that had passed away..

He had kinda behaved himself for quite awhile so we never reinstated the ban. The life bar is getting low again though.. Not only for him but a couple of guys actually.
