Coast Guard Mascots

A lot of you know that I'm former Coast Guard, retired in 2002. Many of the places I was assigned had a dog as their station mascot. At Channel Islands in the late '70s, we had a white shepherd named Chump.

Now I'm all for progress in the Service and the changing of attitudes, and I may be a little bit traditional, but I do firmly believe that they should stick to dogs.

When I was stationed in Mobile we kicked around the idea of a a croc as the air station pet as one was found in a local pond. It never happened because nobody would volunteer to feed it

We had a big ass iguana running around the hangar in Miami one day, but he was a mean fucker. Not keeping that asshole.
The snowflakes got rid of the dogs. What if someone at the unit didn’t like dogs...?

Years ago on St. Paul island on the Aleutian chain some Coasties pulled over by me and 4 or 5 of them jumped out and tried to catch an Arctic Fox. Little guy got away easy, when I asked them what they planned, they said they were going to throw him on the C-130 and take him to their base and make him a pet.

That's no lie. He was so fun to watch, I truly think that most people tuned in to his show to see if he got bit that week. LOL
