School me on props. Looking at either the merc max 5s or the Hill Cleavers. Boat is a 29 Nordic deck with twin 400r outboards. It’s currently set up with 28pitch bravo 4 blades. What are advantages/disadvantages of cleavers over max 5s or vise versa for the ones who are knowledgeable.

What’s the goal you’re trying to achieve? More low end or top speed? Maybe someone can chime in.

Easier time getting on plane. I’m nervous as hell to break a prop shaft 😂😂. I’m not after top speed. With a 2 and 3 year old that’s not in my cards. I know the Nordic will do north of 90 and that’s faster than I’ll ever go lol. But sometimes having to have a big dick contest I may want the top end speed also 😂😂

I thought it was the 450r that broke prop shaft? Or it’s the same lowers?

Same lowers 300Rs, 400Rs, and 450Rs all have the same issue. Even with new revised one piece shaft.

So the new shaft breaks too? Is it usually when getting on plane?

Yes I’ve heard let it sit at about 3200 rpm and let it do its thing till it rolls over. I let mine do that but usually have to throttle up slowly till 3500 as soon as I hear it start to rev up I back off and we are good.

Yes, the cavitation when getting on plane kills them, but running at speed with a cleaver will also make them snap. There is a member here with a 300r on a 21 Liberator who snapped so many shafts under warranty Mercury threatened to stop sending him new ones lol.

For your boat I don’t see the need for them, especially if top speed isn’t your main concern. The short comparison between Max 5s and cleavers is prop slip, the cleavers have less prop slip which equals more top speed.

Another thing to think about is how sharp cleavers are and your kids needing to go in-between them while using the swim step.

They look cool and make the motors sound better though😎

Yeah cleavers sucks for taking off. At least for my boat. I would go with the max 5.

That’s true. Sounds like max 5s are the way to go.

You can also try the Hill Signature 5 blades to save some money.
Agreed i have a hill signature 5 it is a great prop.

I only have one and have never run a cleaver but my holeshot is really nice.

I dont use it as much as i would like. I tent camp on lake Powell and its to much prop when we are fully loaded and i dont switch it out. But for pulling people on the rope it rocks!

I was thinking about the Max 5 for my 29 lavey. But I also seen cutting edge has a series III 5 blade labbed propeller. I am also looking to improve the hole shot but at $2500+ I Wanna make sure it works for my boat.

I’m gonna go with the max 5. The mention of the obvious cleavers being sharper did it for me with 2 young kids. Didn’t even consider that at first. Thank you everyone.

Is this much play normal for this type of hub kit?

Isn’t there a place you can rent props and try them out for like 40 bucks?

I’d like to think no. I’ve only changed a prop on my old drive a few times but I remember zero play.
That's kind of what I was thinking too I only have experience with a Bravo One out drive and the one on the new boat is an Imco SC

Max 5 for the win. Someone I know broke a prop shaft this weekend with a Signature prop on it. Another buddy has Max 5's. Super smooth getting on plane. No question in my mind.

Don’t want to thread jack, but…

Anyone here able to give a comparison between a Max5(bravo 1) and a Bravo 3?

Love my bravo 3 for the holeshot but obviously loose a few mph on top. Would consider swapping to a bravo 1 and a max5 if the holeshot is good enough.

It’s not just holeshot but midrange efficiency (cruise) that a B3 benefits you.

Using a 5 blade on a B1 is close but not the same. But if you want top end, a B1 with a 5 blade will always trump the B3.

Additionally, there are other 5 blade props for B1 that might work better for certain boats. There is the 5 blade Maximus as well as the Max5. So it’s boat and user case specific.

Found it

Awesome thank you that might work 15 days though including shipping time might be kind of difficult and the $55 fee that does not get added to the prop if you buy a new one.. but if it saves me from buying a prop that doesn't work maybe it's worth it.

Can you just rent from BB for the purpose of trying them out and then you don’t have to buy if you just return it?

To me it’s more about identifying the correct prop so you know what to buy. Then save up to buy it from whomever can get you the best price (or find a used one sometimes).

This is more about the high dollar CNC cleaver props than the round ear Bravo styles. $7k prop is a bit of a hit to the wallet.
