Why do people steal catalytic converters?
Catalytic Converter theft has become popular because of their value, relative ease to steal (unbolt or cut out), and their lack of identifying markings. ... Thieves take the stolen Catalytic Converters to metal recyclers. The recyclers pay up to $120 for some converters for the precious metals inside them
The top three most expensive precious metals found within a catalytic converter include rhodium, palladium, and platinum! They're extremely rare precious metals. Not only that, but they're also commonly used in everyday products like: Jewelry.

That sucks. I hate thieves and wish we could cut their hands off like they do in some countries.

They steal them because they are very expensive to replace when they go out and I think junk yards aren’t allowed to sell used ones. If you are trying to pass a smog check and your car is bad you need to replace it.

How/why do you not have an alarm??

I keep reading these threads where people get their vehicles stolen/broken into and just shake my head. There are so many quality alarms out there that will detect just about anything!

Viper makes systems that rival factory installed systems. Phone apps and everything included.

Cheap insurance, no??

most alarms are just fancy relays for intercepting the starter relay wire signal... that being said, its a deterrent. once they blow the door locks out and trash the inside trying to start it... do you really even want the car anymore? just let insurance deal with it and move on.

Well yeah, that Could be a function of any alarm system, but I don't have that option wired in on any of my alarms. As you said, they Could possibly trash your vehicle trying to by pass it. But didn't the ability to hotwire a vehicle go away with most newer trucks/cars? Coded keys eliminated that ability on import vehicle a couple decades ago. Have the domestics STILL not caught on???

On systems I've installed for customers, we put a siren Inside the vehicle and out. It's difficult to get any work done with an alarm siren blaring 6 inches from your head!

Thieves aren't stupid. It's what they do for a living. That little red flashing light is usually enough to get them to move on to the next vehicle. You know, the one without an alarm??

The thieves are the first part of this shit. But they need to start going after the metal recyclers that are paying these fukers for the stolen parts.

Factory alarm was armed. I make sure if it every night before bed. Not sure why it didn’t go off...will investigate that later.

That’s beside the point though. The point being...how much money must we spend on preventative measures and insurance to “save ourselves”?

My answer? $12....box of 00 buck.

I’m fucking done. The next person to set foot on my property that’s not delivering a package or invited is getting shot. If anyone has a problem with that and steps foot on my property to tell me about it, they’ll be shot too. Idgaf.

All my accts were transferred into the wife’s name this morning.

I bought a 69 Road Runner from a buddy back in the 80's. Six pak car, white with a black vinyl top. Maybe my favorite of all my Mopars. Anyway, he had somehow gotten a metal bell with a clanger stolen from the hallway of a school somewhere, and installed it as an alarm with a motion detector setup. That thing could be heard for miles when it went off.

Good luck mang. Nothing worse than having your stuff messed with. I had a house broken into one time. Worst feeling EVER!

The cops told me "they will be back in about a year, they know that's how long it takes to get your insurance work done and your stuff replaced". Sure enough, they came back almost a year later to the date, while I was on vacation. I had a good alarm installed during that time. They did break a window glass, but that's about it. Same f'n window too.

Fuck thieves.

Friend just had the Cats replaced on a f150 so it would pass smog $1700. Few days later he went to start it to take it to smog it and battery was stolen. Bought a battery and fired it up and both cats stolen. He just towed it to Havasu to register it there last weekend. He fired it up on the trailer and it sounded like a boat. Luckily he has a address in Havasu and going to leave it there. Not worth another $1700.

Most of the domestics have coded keys now as well. My dad's 96 impala had a chip key. Still all of that is easily bypassable on older vehicles. Alarm is still a deterent.. if they want the car they are going to take it.

Another reason why I tell people to spend more money on a house in the best possible neighborhood. In the long run the better neighborhood is cheaper than drug rehab for your kids and paying attorneys fees.

I will disagree. I grew up on the hill. More than half the kids I grew up with are addicts now or dead from it. Several are currently in prison and could be living the rich life instead.

Man that makes my blood boil.. Didn't even bother to turn off their headlights while on your driveway.

Woulda been great to drag em in the garage, tie em up and let your big dog play with his new chew toys

No worries. The $1,000 you'll be getting from GrandpaCrack should cover at least some of the repairs. 👍
