I'm thinking of setting back my motor and pump on my Elite 20.5 to give more interior room. What would be the process for it and would it change the ride and handling in the hull (good or bad). Any suggestions please.

Carrera Elite... you're talking 50-60 max with the jet unless you put some big HP in there. I really don't think you are going to see much of a performance change. Not sure what year you have by my 89 was set up similar to yours. I think the later years had the pump/engine set back (access hole outside the transom) and I know my buddies 06 - 08 Ultra had it all set back. You will probably only see about 12 - 18" of gain in the cockpit area though. All depends on how much that space is worth to you. Tom or Josh and Jet Boat Performance might be able to get you better info.

I was wanting to get the access hole outside the transom and figured it would give me a little extra interior room. Planning on redoing the interior and motor and pump within next 2 seasons. Just trying to figure out which one to start on first.

The helms are in a slightly different location in regards to my old Elite and my buddy's Ultra but not that far off. Both were right at about 20' 6" long. Difference in interior room behind my set up and his (both forward facing seats and large bench)was just about 18" more leg room behind the drivers seat.

Definitely do the engine/pump set back first if you're sold on it. No sense in doing your interior and then having to redo it right after. If you do extend it and are truely looking for more room... I've seen a couple Elites with a "L" shaped bench with a small rear facing seat behind the driver. Pretty muck like your modern version of a V-Drive Ski boat. It makes the interior look BIG and is pretty useful for storage and hanging out. I was seriously considering doing a interior change to the L shaped seating before I sold the boat for something bigger.

I love the boat. And want to make it a family/sleeper. I can't afford to get what I really want so I'll just redo this one.

Nice boat, but I wouldn't do it, by the time you're done it will cost more than you planned and be worth less. Spend a little more and you'll get something nicer and finished. I'm done trying to be a designer of anything. :p

The set back process involves removing the engine., the jet and the jet intake then some machining of the intake casting and some mold/fill work ahead of the intake , the engine will be repositioned and re mounted , were in process of a couple of these right now , will try to start a thread to add some "visual to the process over the next few days Tom

Thanks. I'm not sure if it will be worth it or not. What would be the estimated cost for something like this.

IMO keep it as it is your not going to win many races and in the end your still going to get beat by the same boat with a big block bravo combo that is stock.

If you just want faster you would be better of just selling it and adding the money you would have put into it into another 20.5 with an outdrive.Its a family cruiser so enjoy it for what it is and its a nice boat.

I doubled the HP in my 90 20.5 Elite and gained 10 MPH... 63MPH with 620HP lol. I'm thinking of removing that motor and throwing a 330HP stocker back in. Dennis Wenzen, the guy that built our boats, said no matter what the HP you will not break that mark.

All of them that I have worked on had some 'hook' in the area around the jet intake . Hull bottom and strakes that have 'hook' in them will effect the top straight line speeds, regardless of the power applied . If you have TOM (jetboat performance) do the work, he will know where the 'hook' is and what to do about it .

If Youre moving it back for room, go for it. if you want performance... save your coin.
I threw 600 HP at one of those hulls and ran low 60's it was set back with an SD 309 pump, bottom was straightened, pump was tight. just a big boat to get out of the water.
