Go an hour south to playa del carmen...stay at Hotel Xcaret or Hotel Arte owned by the same company...Best place hands down...all inclusive and all fun inclusive...do the Sunday Brunch it's off the charts...Stay at Casa Fuego at Xcarat it's adults only, Arte is all adults only.

Been there a bunch of times, but not in the past 10 years. It absolutely was an option for this years vacay but Cancun lost to Costa Rica... One thing that tipped the scales for me is the Sargassum Seaweed warnings on the Costco Travel website. Not to scare you, and I didn't see a lot about it in the reviews of the resorts so it doesn't seem to be an issue to travelers, but putting it out there as an fyi.

The "island" is shaped like a "7" and if you stay on the top of the 7, those will be calm beaches, and the beaches on the right side of the 7 will be facing open ocean and a bit rougher. All-inclusive is the way to go, not always gourmet food, but after a couple days of food coma, it's nice to be able to just nibble at the salad bar. There's also good restaurants around that you can go to, even if you do an all-inclusive, it's nice to get out.

Couple of the cool things I've done there over the years has been Chichen Itza (the Mayan pyramids), sea-doo tours of the lagoon and mangroves, snorkeling, diving at Cozumel, Xcaret, and Xel-Ha...

Star ratings for the resorts are accurate, but a Mexico 5-star is not a US 5-star, it's a bit slower, so just chill and enjoy. I see a lot of reviews about musty hotel smells, but hello, you're in a rain forest... The activities at the resort are not 24/7, they're on fixed schedules like once a week (eg scavenger hunt is every Tue afternoon...), so plan accordingly and make sure to put some chill time on the calendar since it's easy to come home needing some rest after the vacay...!

Moon Palace is a nice place to stay. It's not in the city of Cancun but on the water. I love it down there.
  1. Go see the Cenotes & float through their underground river & caves
  2. Chichen Itsa is cool & one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It's a long bus ride into the jungle so don't go if it's summer. Too hot & humid then.
  3. Hang out in Playa del Carmen just bumming around
  4. Take a ferry to Cozumel for a day of snorkeling (we prefer diving though). The best diving in the world IMO. You can take courtesy dives without being certified if you want to try it (El President Hotel & Scuba Club Cozumel offer them & that's how we got hooked with our young teen aged boys even).
  5. Xel Ha is a great day of lazy floating & drinking.
  6. Tulum is a tourist trap but pretty cool.
  7. There's also a couple water slide parks but we've never been.

Go to YouTube google it and you’ll see the automatic machine gun fire on the beach and the tourist area over the last year. No place in Mexico is safe and I mean no place. You’re looking to go south Costa Rica can be a good spot.

XCaret is silly but awesome, too. Further south is less touristy. Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Akumal.

My last few trips have been to Puerto Morales, All Inclusive.
Less touristy, older crowd, better food, excellent accommodations and staff. But the beach isn’t as good.
The food quality is what made us stop going to Cabo.

Next month is Punta Cana. First time there. I hear good things.

Take a look at Puerto Adventuras. It is a huge gated master planned community, about 20 minutes past Playa Del Carmen. You can stay in hotel, but I would recommend vrbo. You can find beach front or marina front rental properties. There is a bar/restaurant row, with plenty of choices. Here, you can rent a golf cart for your stay, and use it to cruise all over the place. You can also charter a fishing boat at marina to go fishing. They also have a dolphin show at marina. Golf courses too. Nicest part is that it is a gated community with out the rift raft. You don’t have street vendors hounding you. Google it.

We like Excellence Playa Mujeres. Adults only, all-inclusive. Great food/drinks. We prefer the swim up rooms.

It takes a right minded woman, but if you want to party and take the “good time” up a notch, check out Temptations. We’ve been there a few times, the place never disappoints.

I just wont spend my money in Mexico, such a screwed up country.
Sure the resorts are great but so are the resorts in other areas of the world that don't send millions of invader's top our borders.

That is a wild part that I never travel to, not even Jakarta. I worry more about volcanos. And just about no one in Indonesia had guns, at times sentenced criminals get whipped in public.

Went in Feb. it was great! No issues at all, did Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza. We did a group on the Isla tour and it was cool, we did private on the Chichen tour and it was worth it but a long drive and long day. We felt safe the entire time and had a blast!

Been there many times. The best times were in the early 80's, before it got big. Went there with my buddies, we partied like maniacs all week long on less than 400 bucks. Bars & restaurants were super cheap, case of Dos Equis about 5 bucks and cab rides $1 for wherever you wanted to go.

Have some friends that go every year, but they say too many shady characters around to go out carousing downtown bars or stay out real late at night.

I say stay at nice hotel with lots of activity and dining options. That's what i did last time...but I'm a lot older now.

We go to RIU Palace Los Americas for 8 years now but not during covid. Don't go after 1st of June due to heat and humidity. It is in the middle of the Hotel Zone and never had any problems. Great food and service. It is All Inclusive and adults only. A lot of veggie dishes if wanted

That’s a great choice. Adults only. I think it was the highest rated hotel in the area when we went.
