Sorry if I missed another thread aka Vin.
As many of you know I live in San Bernardino Mountains and have been here my entire life. Owning a generator isn't always a luxury, many times it's a serious necessity. Especially with Edison constantly shutting down our power due to maintenance and high winds and major snow events. Anyone know what the hell the idea came from to get rid of a life saving machine?

I'm looking into a new one. Mine is older than I am. Looked at Lowe's last week for a buddy of mine and everything was special order... WTF!?. The store is in Highland right at the bottom of the mountain... But I wasn't surprised when they stopped carrying snow blowers and heaters in the winter time... Corporate and middle management bullshit at its best.

Most of the people on this board, have a very good idea of my profession, and what I do for a living. Lets just say I know alot about the Utility world. Lets back way up… Nuke Submarine which had a Reactor, a Diesel Engine and boat load of batterys. I got out of the Navy in 1996.

When it comes to Back Up generators. There are several things you need to know.
They are typically rated at peak power, not steady run time.
So rough red neck math… says you need to size the generator 75% of your peak load.
But that does not allow for loads that have high start up duty, like pumps or A/C compressors… if your trying to back those up then 75% will not be enough under “start up loads” conditions.

Regardless, for those of you that are truly looking to back up there house, then dont look at that stupid shit your gonna buy at Lowes/Costco or Harbor Freight. That stuff allows you to plug in some loads via long extension cords, and make sure they have plenty of gas..

If you truly think have a problem that needs a whole house back up generator, then quit fucking around and solve the problem correctly with a whole house back up generator and a transfer switch.

APPLES….. ORANGES…. BANANNAS…

Define your needs, then put the proper equipment in place to solve those problems.

Get a professional, call a local Generac or Kohler dealer if you truly want to solve the problem.

If you dont, your fucking with shit that can burn your house down, or kill your family with carbon monoxide.

I can keep going, this is alot more than going to Harbor Freight, and some extension cords.

Is there any rules about buying out of state and bringing them to CA?
Or is this basically, just going to make it harder to get one?

You have to dig into the different language of the rules between portable and emergency standby.
CARB has made it that complex.

Emergency Standby - is more lenient than portable for the most part. But most retailers are selling portables. And they dont have much supply.

I know I being a bit vague here. But I am doing so for a reason.

When it comes to this subject.
You have to do your own research
You have to determine your needs
Please factor in my post above. Dont ever try to back up your house with a portable.

Apples and oranges.

As a professional general building contractor and also the son of one. We have dealt with this thousands of times over the years. Even being "against the rules" I know how to back feed the pannel. I know the risks if I miss a step. I also have a generator that has double the max capacity of what I need to get by.
I also understand your point of view regarding the general public of using a gas generator to power the home and how dangerous it can be.

All I asked was a simple question about why we now have this ridiculous ban. Nothing more than that.

Or will they just run “welders” lol

The Ban.
Its 100% political. Ca is governed by a huge majority of Dems and controls the Gov, who has a major hard on for meeting “GREEN AGENDAS” regardless of the price to the rate payer, or the reliability of the grid.

These goals of 100% renewable by a defined date, are not realistic. But these goals dictate the lower regulatory bodys to make the stupid rules that you are seeing. Regardless of the fact they make the grid less reliable, and drive the cost up alot.

In there mind, either meet the green agenda of the world ends. PERIOD.

To regular folks who are trying to keep the lights on and earn a living, then we are left in the middle ground.

I promise you one thing. The grid will get alot more un reliable in the future. So if you are remotely considering back up generator, then now is the time.

I am not joking. If the equipment that I have provided to the west coast fails prematurely, then you will see major blackouts. I have dug up the Las Vegas strip our front of Ceasars palace, and 12 other locations in Vegas over the years and many many more in the PG&E SanFran area. I have supplied over 1,000,000 ft of HV Underground cable to the West Coast 138kv ,230kv, Hundreds of Large Power Transformers and Generator Step Up transformers, etc etc etc.

This is what I do. This is my world, and has been since I turned 18 in boot camp. I turned 50 the other day.

So saying all of that… Put a few pieces of the puzzles together. I am an insider who knows how the systems operate, and the reasons why.

I am not happy with the current policy‘s and regulations. They all lead to a less reliable grid for many many reason.

Remember, I am about to leave CA an move to another state, the grid is a part of of my decision, but not the defining reason.

So I wonder how many portable generators this is going to actually stop being used?
like how else are you going to get electrical power
as a contractor I have 4 generators and I’m thinking I need another one Before the ban!

the grid gets shut off all the time!
You either need -
1-
solar and a battery back up (that will power your house )
2-
generator back up full house or partially ( a few outlets )
3-
power from grid

then throw on say Ele cars, pool pumps and AC & multiple freezers / refrigerators ….. a full home back up generator is the ticket

wife and I were just talking about this on our way back to San Diego earlier today!
good thing we have a house in podunk - havasu ! The water is cheap! Electrical is fairly cheap ! And the internet is the problem - Damm Suddenlink!

You have to dig into the regulations between Portable and Emergency Backup.
I know most dont have the time. There are several major differences in todays regulations.

But take note of a few things that have passed but will take effect in the future.
Alot of city’s and county’s in Ca have regulations in place that will not allow a new home or commercial building to have a Natural Gas line on the property. They have to 100% electric. Unless you have a “special permit” for a “pizza oven“ or ______. But its a special permit.

So the bottom line of future regulations is no Nat gas… so they are regulating the future ability to easily install a permently installed back up generator in homes that will be build in the next few years. Unless the new home owner installs a propane tank and runs off that.

In my industry, the first of its kind “Industrial Portable BESS” Battery Electric Storage Systems, will be hitting the market in the very near future. Trust me they exist, but they are in short supply and they are very expensive. They are in the infancy of the entering the market. They will become the standard in the future, but they are not cost effect today.

Butt regardless all BESS have a finite amp hour rating. Once you discharge them, then they are worthless untill you recharge them.

Thats where the regulations are heading, forcing all consumers (utilitys and consumers) on the BESS band wagon, regardless of the cost.

PM me if you want a quote on a industrial or Utility scale BESS. I will rake in the $$$, but that doesnt mean its the right thing for the overal price to the rate payer on the grid.

Bottom Line… meet the green agenda or the worlds ends. Thats the regulations regardless of your situation.

Is so, then please correct me where I am wrong.
Many citys in SoCal have already passed ordorance that prevents new construction of as of 2022 or 2023 (pending that community) from installing Nat Gas in new construction of private residences and commercial buildings..

This shit is serious, and the stupid voters of CA have allowed this shit to happen.

Just google, what citys have banned Nat Gas in new construction, then get back to me.

FACTS BROTHER…. I AM NOT JOKING.

Easy brother, I don't think he was debating what you said. He was just saying that the idiotic lawmakers in California are treating our state like it's a B rated action movie, with no regard for the future.

The clueless lawmakers in California have no interest in being environmentally friendly, they just want us all dependant on electric everything so that they can control us via the grid.

Outlawing generators? LOL, yeah okay, let's see how that works out for them. They are pressing too hard, and pretty soon their bulshit agenda is going to get ignored and then they will throw a hissy fit. Except nobody will care, and they will be crying into the mirror.

I am done with this thread for awhile.
Banter all you want.

Trust me one thing. The more the Gov and Regulatory enforcement agencys, force BESS down the Utility’s and consumers throat, I will make alot of money.

I know for fact that is can solve alot of problems that have been created by the Gov and REg bodys, but that does not mean its the right thing for the rate payers and the end consumer. Because they don’t understand the grid and the long term impacts of these requirements.

Which is why a solar/ bess/ generator at your house is something you should truly consider, if you cant live with a long term power outages.

Go back to my posts on this subject in the various threads..

Black starting a Grid is almost impossible with out Intertia, there are aspects on the grid that create inertia. Meaning large base load power plants, like 1000MW Nat Gas plants , large Nuke Plants, things like that strategically placed at certain distances apart. Allow for a re energizing a dark grid.

With out them your fucked…

Why is Ca not allowing the older power plants to repower? Why is SONGs shut down? Why is Diablo Canyon shut down? Why are the vast majority of the power plants on the west coast going dark in the coming years?

Huntingbeach? Redondo beach, El Segundo? I can keep this goign all day. Why because I already know the answers. Its not in the rates payers best interest. Yes, green house gas’s will go down, but good fucking luck charging your IPhone or Telsa after a major power outage.

Why, because to re energize the long transmission lines. Your have to have interia on the power line, to get the power to flow. Without it, POWER DOES NOT FLOW.

The regulatory bodys, are hoping that Micro Grids and BESS are there to save the day.
They absolutely can IN THEORY, if they where cost effective, integrated into a smart grid, and had 300% redundancy. But they are not and have many limitations.
Which is not a topic I have the time to get into this pm.

Thanks, that's the thread I was worried about Vin. But seriously? A battery backup described as a "generator" makes zero sense. It lasts less than two hours and then your fucked. Here there are occasions when we can be without power for several days if not longer. Most cannot afford the natural gas permanent setup. And a two hour battery backup ain't gonna fuckin cut it.

In my county in TN they are running new nat gas lines all over the county. Very rural area, so I was wondered why. Electric Co guy told me, so people could heat their homes cheaper and to run back up generators.

So CA is expecting FAUs to be only electric as well? That’s news to me.

Same for water heaters?

Edit: of course Berkeley would lead this charge 🤦🏼‍♂️

From some short reading it looks like it is happening in some localized nor cal areas. I’m reading there are cooking exemptions but that they want all electric heating in 4+ unit new construction by 2024.

Massachusetts passed no natural gas in 2019 in some cities but the Attorney General walked it back due to the cities over stepping their authority.

Edit 2: add Sacramento to the list no natural gas for new builds 3 stories or less starting January 1 2023.

By Jan 1 2026 they want a ban on all new construction.

Existing buildings would be allowed to buy new natural gas equipment for replacement and expansion

I did read your post!

i think it’s absolutely insane what’s happening !! The direction that some are going - passing laws and regulations ( betting on, doubling down - ALL In no matter what the cost is )

Is Simply GROSS!!

down the road it will be looked back on and it won’t be good

natural gas has stayed fairly consistent in residential applications

but electrical power generation by burning natural gas has bumped big time, Here in Escondido they open 2 power plants that are nat gas fueled.

not sure how things will pan out 15-20 years down the road when all you have is electricity

im not arguing with you or your information. I think it’s a GROSS NEGLIGENCE to rely on tech that isn’t even produced yet.

stupid voters are also need to take some responsibility for this

Well another step forward, two steps back --- Portable Generators gone by 2028 --- although just maybe they'll perform a bit more due diligence before actual implementation, Sayeth the Air Gods.

I was impressed with the representation by the various concerned industries, to bad CARB won't listen. Loved the part when the RV industry reps told CARB how everybody will just go to AZ to purchase their new RV's and generators. 🖕 😂

thats the problem. carb and epa at this point have so much power theres no point in having discussions with them, they wont listen they dont care. they have to justify their own existence every year by more and more restrictions. the only way any of this will ever "go back" is by removing CARB completely.

This is the loophole the state uses to implement far overreaching laws while lawmakers can appear to keep their hands from getting dirty.

These people sitting on the board of these organizations are not voted in, they’re appointed, so they have no interest in hearing the public’s opinion. They’re sole job is to do what the government wants regardless of the pain or economic impact it has on voters.

It’s the same reason that the government is solely using OSHA to manage the vaccine mandates for business. It’s shameful.

“Podunk house in Havasu” “The Water is cheap”…
What happens when they continue to reduce the water in Co River in 2022 and 2023?
What happens when Hoover Dam quits producing electricity?
You may not have a problem today, but all indications say, you will in the near future.
I would not be buying property on the Co River right now.
As a matter of fact a good buddy of mine sold his house in Mohave last month for these reasons.

Short sighted is right. What is the answer given by political leaders, just use less power. lol

I was watching a documentary that states with current technology that we cannot meet 100% of our energy demand with only renewables. It is just a dream with no real solution. And batteries don’t help as they cannot store enough power to meet demand.

The problem is the large numbers in terms of demand. Our demand is huge and the supply by renewable is very small by comparison. ( less than 10%) We won’t be able to super size renewables to meet our current demand without something else. The problem is too large. Plus our demand will continue to grow over time. Renewable supply will never meet demand, not even close.

Bottom line is 100% renewable supply is a dream with no real practical solution and destined for failure.

The problem is our leaders know this and they are pursuing this nonsense anyway.

So renewables should be supplemental only

“Podunk house in Havasu” “The Water is cheap”…
What happens when they continue to reduce the water in Co River in 2022 and 2023?
What happens when Hoover Dam quits producing electricity?
You may not have a problem today, but all indications say, you will in the near future.
I would not be buying property on the Co River right now.
As a matter of fact a good buddy of mine sold his house in Mohave last month for these reasons.

Article from Sept 2010 when water was at 1084... Its now at 1065...

Curious as to how this affects motorcycle sales for off-road etc? Everyone keeps calling it the generator ban, but I understood it to be all off highway small engines?

Note the sentence in the second image

Havasu gets water from wells as a back up to the Colorado River Aquifer.

if the Colorado River stop flowing So Cal with be in HUGE hurt! And if that’s the case California will die!
if ca does De sal then then won’t need water from the Colorado River….

and then we will get rain and fill up all the lakes and life will be good again along the Colorado river- yea!

Arizona also sells electric to ca. they like coal, nuclear, nat gas they won’t run out!
California will be in a world of hurt they are relying on other states to provide for them, plus no small generators!

lol

How are contractors supposed to build a job that does not have utilities in yet? I have many jobs where the first few months are built with portable generator power until DWP/SCE actually show up ands gets us power.
