I sold my Superduty April 5 2023, we immediately went to the DMV website and submitted the Release of Liability online that night. The DMV still has me as the owner. It doesn't help the the guy didn't put it in his name either but the Release of Liability should have cut me out of this as I'm not liable for anything that truck does any longer, hence "Release of Liability".

We have copies of everything Bill of Sale, back of pink filled out with the new owners info... Copies of everything and Afadivit are being mailed tomorrow.

I texted him a this picture and said he needed to take care of this and to put the truck in his name

Since he didn't transfer it, you are the last known owner. It's beyond stupid we have to always prove ourselves to these "Agencies" even though we've followed their procedure to the T.
.
I will say, I've seemingly had better luck using/mailing the handwritten form attached to the title and supplement that with the online form.

If the new owner registers it in a different state they really get f'd up since no new fees come in on that vehicle. I had a dirt bike i took to AZ and they hounded me for 3 years then took the money from my tax refund anyway.

Definitely been down this road a few times , had one where I would just send back the information showing proof I sent the release of liability in each time with the proper information who owned it. Well thought all was good till I seen CA deducted the fee from a paycheck 🤦🏽‍♂️.it was for a quad so was $75 but still was BS. Since then, been using AAA to turn them in, they stamp and make a copy for you when you turn in through them.

Don’t forget about boat sales too, the luxury tax don’t stop either if new owner doesn’t register in Ca and takes it out of state. Unfortunately learned that lesson too.

Well since it’s still in your name….

Do you have a spare key for your truck?

Go get it and let him know he can meet ya AAA to transfer title and to bring $100 bucks cash to pay for the toll !!

In the pass I just sign the release form .
Mail a copy .
Make sure you keep a copy and the bill of sale with both of your signatures.
Done
Once parking ticket came in the mail . Mailed DMV the copy that’s it .
On the old classic car I never mail it in .

I'd been living in AZ for 5 years, and still received a renewal notice for my 87 f350. Now, I moved here in 12...the truck was totaled in 05! F'n 12 years in a row they sent me this notice. There is nothing quite as efficient as the DMV 🤣

I don’t know why AAA cant handle everything but administering the drivers written and in person tests and taking the license photos. DMV needs to let AAA handle everything else.

DMV is the poster child for government apathy and how a private entity can run circles around them.

Yup, they're promoting all these new online service offerings.... I attempted to renew mine and you can bet they were real efficient at collecting that $45 on a card but when I checked if my new address had been correctly uploaded it had not.... so I went on their BOT chat service and eventually chatted online with a real person who assured me it'll all be fine. Its still just a government agency functioning as they all do... ineptly.... as for receiving my new license in the mail .... thats a negatory after 3 weeks.

Its been a few years, but last time I received a ticket in the mail for a vehicle I'd sold, I went and got it, then applied for a duplicate title to replace a "lost" title. Sold it back to the same asshole again but for more $$ the second time.

Back more than a few years ago I went in for my CDL Firefighter DL renewal. Basically a fee and new picture. Long story short, I had tp go back 5 times because my license kept showing up without the FFTR Endorsements. This was a renewal mind you. They finally said every thing was good they just needed a new picture! My department gave me one week to get it corrected or I would be put on leave without pay for not having the correct license to drive the fire engine. I called Senator Leonard’s office and explained the situation and what Mr. XXXX told me. He called back that afternoon and said my new CORRECT license was being overnighted to me. I said but Mr. XXXX told me he needed an new picture. Senator Leonard say, “For crying out loud, they have 5 pictures of you, and Mr. XXXX no longer works for the DMV!” My new correct license arrived the next day.

When we moved to Idaho and re-licensed the vehicles I sent the change of address and the physical license plates back to California with a tracking number! So far, 2 years later, all is good!

If release dont mean shit and the guy can’t pay his toll I’d go get the truck back. Tell guy you have it bring the money down show proof he paid. When he does you go to transfer

If he doesn’t tell him you are selling to someone else to cover the cost.

Story time.

Sold a car shortly after high school, guy never registered it, got arrested in it and the car was impounded. Got the notice of intent to lein sale from the tow yard…. Since I’m the registered owner still, I went and got my car. Never heard a word about it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Exact scenario happened to a friend as well. Went & got it out of impound. Like reuniting with your old girlfriend.😊

My girlfriend had a second car that my Gardner said he wanted to buy. The fucker shows up with his wife and what he says is his wife's cousin. The cousin speaks no english so the Gardner is doing all the speaking and says when we go to fill out all the paperwork that the cousin is buying the car so he wants my girlfriend to put a higher price on the paperwork since the Gardner is making money off the deal. I told the Gardner we are selling the car to you at the agreed price. We aren't playing that game. That car was going straight mexico 🇲🇽.

Good timing on this thread. I am about to move all my shit over (except boat and boat trailer in Az) moving everything else to Utah from CA. I hope they realize it’s gone out of the state. Any advice here?

Lmao I’ve been dealing with the same shit just with a boat that I sold in 2021. Got a county assessors letter after I sold and turned the release in as I do it religiously because of prior issues. Back tracked everything at the time so I didn’t have to pay the tax as I hadn’t owned the boat. This was in 23 (for 2022) found all the info for the release and submitted everything again on the form as you couldn’t do it online yet.

Just got another one. For 2023 and apparently it’s still in my name according to dmv.

I found out it’s acceptable to put unknown on the release of liability and better to do online now that you can as it goes into the system right away if you complete it and the site says it’s completed to the end.

You guys should try the dmv in the south. They are so nice, friendly and helpful. No I am not kidding. Went to renew the truck as there is a glitch in the on-line renewal. Went in with no appt. Walked right up and less than 5 min later had the new tag. 2014 GMC 1500. $29 for the year.

I live in Oregon and traded in a Ram for a new Ford last year. A few months later I get a CA toll road invoice just like you showed us, from the bay area, with a front picture of my old Ram. I follow the directions to contest the charge, and provide the bill of sale/trade in paperwork from the Ford dealer dated well before the incident. I get a response letter in the mail that it isn't sufficient proof I don't own the vehicle.

Morons. Same thing with my wrecked '70 C10. Toll Ticket in the mail. I sent a pic of the wrecked truck, front plate from the side, due to the 90% T-Bone...

Just HOPEFULLY finished this same deal, sold boat in 2021! New owner registered it in AZ, I sent in release... Get notice the next year on taxes, correct it with everyone after weeks of back and forth. This year I can't process anything through the DMV, they have a lean on me because of the boat!!! Even send them the notice from their own department and they still need to investigate! Three years later I finally get the paperwork and my name cleared!!! THEY SUCK!!! When I called the assesors office the lady was a total bitch when I was nothing but nice and it was their mistake!

They stole a refund I was due from an old quad I sold.

Currently I am waiting 56 days for my stickers. Paid the fees on time, did the smog late. Unable to renew online, I suppose due to it being in process. Website says two weeks for tags, been two months.

I usually get a notarized bill of sale when completing the transaction and always visit DMV in person with a completed release of liability.
I remember the Calif DMV nightmares. Here in Co, there is never a line at our local DMV.

If you move out of state, can you write up a bill of sale to yourself, showing your name and CA address as the seller and the buyer as your name and the new state address and then put that with a release of liability and mail the whole thing into the DMV (and retain copies)?

Or, just throw them in the trash?

How did they get your new address?

I sold a boat trailer to a guy last year. I never realized he didn't register it until I got the renewal (of the perm plate!). I contacted him and he said he would get it done asap. He went to the DMV in Laguna Hills and somehow was able to register my jet ski trailer in his name. He contacted me to let me know he got it registered and attached a photo of the pink slip --- wrong trailer bud. Took him a few months to get that straightened out and for me to get a new title to my jet ski trailer.

And I just setup up an appointment a AZ MVD for tommorow at 8am to do a title transfer. I will be out of there in under 15 minutes total. I can be done easily if they tried or cared.

Right?
I literally walk in. No appointment. There might be one person in front of me. When I went two weeks ago, I walked straight up to the counter. Did not have to circle the parking lot looking for a place to park. Parked right in front of the courthouse, walked across the lawn and up the steps. Our MVD is part of the county revenue department. I'm not sure how it all works, but it works. The clerk smiled at me and asked me how my day was going. We chatted for a few minutes about the farmer's market and the weather before she handed me my new plates and I walked out the door. It was a pleasant experience and I left there smiling. I love living in Mayberry, USA.
