This might be the first post here about someone moving to CA. We're leaving in a few weeks for El Dorado Hills and are pretty excited. My long-term girlfriend and I have been trying to get out of the Florida Panhandle for a while because we’re really bored. I’ve talked with her a few times about moving to Cave Creek, AZ, where I lived for several years, but I was worried about introducing her to the desert (she’s from Michigan and Tennessee) and not knowing anyone there. She has two sisters in El Dorado Hills, both married to brothers who grew up there. The sisters have been living there for 40 years.

We visited Northern California for the first time about a month ago and decided that’s our spot. Snowboarding in Tahoe, motocross at Hangtown, downhill mountain biking at Northstar—it all sounds great to me. I’ve also been wanting to get into karting and found a track nearby. There’s a community for her, and plenty of outdoor sports for me. I’ve always wanted a jet boat, so maybe there’s a scene for that on Lake Folsom as well.

I know the politics there are a bit ridiculous, but I actually saw more Trump flags during our visit than Democratic ones. Her family is all anti-vax and right-wing, so we’ll have like-minded people around and will probably be introduced to their like-minded friends.

Who’s the best Chevy dealer in the area? I’d like to get a Trail Boss as soon as we get there.

No Chevy dealers I can recommend in NorCal, but outside of the liberal cities, rural NorCal is pretty red, it should be enjoyable.

Buy the trail boss in fl where the sales tax is lower and will actually be used for something more decent than some purple haired lesbian studying the impact of toxic masculinity on the price of tampons....

I suggest Mammoth over Tahoe. But try both.

Buy a truck in Montana and stay there. Jk it's cheaper. You will never explore all the natural beauty of the state in a lifetime. Welcome

It's great that you will be moving to a red area but you still have to deal with the blue decisions and bullshit

Would be better off moving to Reno/Sparks area and be a short drive for visits. Rural CA is def Red, but will be out numbered by LA/San Fran votes. Dems hold a super majority and don’t even have to bring most things to a vote since they have 2/3 majority. Dems hold all state wide offices and have for several years. It is a beautiful state, but just make sure you do your homework

I also thought about moving to rural Nor Cal before we decided on Havasu. It's great up there. Like others have said, mostly red, but surrounded by blue.

The problem with me is that I would be pretty out of the way from my customer base. Havasu has really become a hub for the offroad powersports market.

I am just east of EDH and I hope you like crazy high utility bills and stupid high homeowners insurance (if you can even get it) or be forced to get it through the state.

I was born and raised here and all of those things that you like are not worth it for me to stay and actively looking at KY.

I am a few miles from EDH. It is mostly Republican. The Sheriff has always been “Shall Issue”. The lake (Folsom) is a zoo on weekends and very accessible the rest of the time. You bill be minutes from a ramp. There is also the Sac River and Lake Tahoe nearby.

The Hangtown Track is operated by Marysville MMX and there is a separate charge to ride it. The rest of Prairie City OHV, including a nice practice track is open Thursday- Tuesday. I pay three bucks to get in. There’s also Mammoth Bar OHV and the National Forests to ride. I see lifted trucks flying Trump flags daily.

Lake Oroville is 90 minutes away. Below is a video taken on Memorial Weekend.

This entire region is not that liberal. There are places to shoot nearby in the Eldorado National Forest. It gets cold in the winter. I’ve gone snow skiing and water skiing on the same weekend. NorCal beaches are cold. It can be 105 here and 65 at the beach 90 minutes away. I was born here. I am literally five minutes away from EDH and my home owners is $550.00 a year. My electric bill runs from a low of $60 to a high of $135 depending on the season. Gas is $20 to $100. I know I’ll never leave.

Dribble thank you for encouraging words. We're going to be about a mile from EDH Town Center. Leasing a place for a year, seeing if it works for us, if so setup for the long haul. I know prices are high in CA, but we live in a resort, and this entire area is a vacation spot, so we're used to being gouged everywhere we go. I think we're actually going to be living more economical, or if nothing else it will be a lateral move.

My Best friend growing up moved away to El Dorado hills area probably 30 years ago. It's been a long time since I drove up there to visit him. I think 2007 was the last time. He has a boat docked in Monterey. I think 1 house is actually in Shingle springs the other Cameron Park. He always talks shit about SoCal. And how much better life is up there. I can't disagree I lived in Chico for a while. I could easily live on the central coast also. If you don't like it I would check out Atascadero or close by on the central coast. I often think how life would be if I stayed in Norcal. Or moved to central coast 20 years ago when I was a regular at Naci. Now I am stuck in the rat race. Working 80-100 hours a week to live above my means in a tiny house.

EDH is better than Reno/Sparks. Hillery Shieve (Reno Mayor) wrecked that place. If you can afford it EDH is pretty awesome. I'm a Calihater, but NorCal has some damn nice spots with some cool people.

@SPYLIFE - I am somewhat in the area. The Kart track at Prarrie City is awesome. I used to be a club member there. Ron Emmick (Emmick Karts) designed the track within off camber chicane and a decent length straight. He did a great job. They also have a mini sprint car track.

I don't know the Message me when you get here and we can try to meet up for a beer. I don't know much about El Dorado Hills, so I can't really provide any tips or insight.

I've never driven a kart before, but at 54 years old I feel my level of some of the other things I like to do are going to need to be slowing down a little bit in the next few years. Ho humming down a mountain on a bike/board will get boring quick. I have to imagine driving a Kart 60+ a few inches off the ground is rather thrilling.

When we went out to CA last month I was expecting it not be too pleasant. Almost like another country. It seems the consensus here is NorCal is pretty nice. We'll miss the beach being a mile away, but we both love new adventures.

I have lived in El Dorado Hills for the past 27 years , 1 mile from the launch ramp at Browns Ravine Lake Folsom. We just bought a house in Hardeeville SC and will be moving there in July. My average monthly PG&E bill is $550/mo , Water $150/mo ave 3500 sqft home on 1/4 acre. Were moving due to the cost of living getting out of control and the one party state politics. El Dorado county is mostly red but very little gets done as we have a small voice. The Gov is blatantly corrupt and doesn't even try hiding it anymore . Folsom is great during the week but ridiculous on weekends as the wave tractors ruin it for everyone. If you buy a boat and think your going to drag it up to Tahoe and plop it in your setting yourself up for an expensive wakeup call. The Tahoe locals have put up so much red tape to put your boat in it's not worth it. Your decision to rent is a good one , come and buy my house in April. 4 car garage and has had a jet boat parked in it for the last 27 years ( but I sold it last March)

I don’t have solar. If did I wouldn’t be paying anything some months. My AC doesn’t come on until it’s over 95 outside. Prices have skyrocketed but when I bought new I paid 391K for 2000sq ft single story with a tandem garage that fits the boat. When I lived in Granite Bay ( before my divorce) I was 5 minutes from two boat ramps. I did most of my weekend boating on the Sac River near Knights Landing. Now i’m 20 minutes from the ramps. I do pay about $150 a month for water and sewer but I use a shit ton of water. I just checked my electric bill for last month which covered mid August- mid Sept. We had a bunch 100 plus days and several that were higher. My bill was $140. The highest one this year.

Left California in mid August. We close on a house in North Carolina on Monday. Do I miss a lot about California? Yes. Born in San Francisco in 1956. Lived in Livermore for 40 years. Most of California is rural and great. Going to miss the Delta, Clear lake and Lake Don Pedro. Going to miss the Diablo Bowmen archery club at the base of Mount Diablo with 65 acres to shoot on. Oh yeah, the produce was great.

Gas is way cheaper but liquor is very expensive. In general, I don't think you save much over all on the basics. Housing is definitely cheaper, but I probably could have moved to Eldorado Hills or parts east and done fine.
