Dave, please do not move this to the Guns and Ammo section. It will get more visibility here and might help out a few inmates.

Happy Holidays from CA. As a gift, I got you all a free reminder of the lack of freedom here in CA.

If you build your own guns, you should understand AB857. It regulates the so-called "Ghost Guns" by making them not "Ghost Guns" anymore.

Please spare me your "What CA doesn't know, won't hurt them" comments. I get it. I'm just bringing the bad news, not telling you that you have listen to it.

The important dates are July 1, 2018 and January 1, 2019.

July 1, 2018: If you want to build a gun after this date, you must first request permission and a serial number from the state before you build.

January 1, 2019: If you built a gun before July 1, 2018, you must request a unique serial number from the state prior to 12am on January 1, 2019.

That's the short version of it. There are exceptions. If you want those details, watch the webinar below. It's sponsored by the NRA and other California gun groups.

Finally, this is not legal advice. This is just a reminder to do your research on AB857 so you don't get arrested for misdemeanor while enjoying a nice day of shooting in the desert.

It’s a pretty niche deal so they will again get away with it.. right up until someone that really believes in the constitution defends their rights forcibly.

its not niche in CA. Because of their laws a VERY large number of AR's are 80% lowers, obviously far more than the state even thinks I'm sure. This is a huge deal in CA, causing people to do all manner of crazy things to them to try and circumvent the platform (some funky ass stocks, removing flash suppressors, coming with all manner of unique take down pin methods, bullet buttons etc). its turned AR ownership in CA into a joke.

That’s what they want, to make it such a joke that people will not want to deal with it. Meanwhile all the criminals will continue to secure their illegal firearms the state can’t figure out how to keep out of their hands

I know a shop that has 3 cnc machines that only runs AR lowers. They run them 2 shifts daily. Pump out 100's of the everyday.

Like the others have said, it's definitely not niche in CA.

I just texted a buddy about this and he asked if I heard about NJ. He said NJ banned all mags over 10 rounds and required citizens to turn them in. There was not one turned in.

With that being said, my professional licensing authority does not appreciate misdemeanors. Thus, I am forced to build my toys under the watchful eye of the evil villain Newsom. My career is slightly more important than a gun built by me without a serial number.

I just requested two unique serial numbers and it took about 10 mins and as expected... cost some money ($50).

If you're not familiar with what the state (Kalifornia) has done to the AR 15 to make it legal in the state you're in for a shock as I was when I visited a gun store last year. Take a gander for yourself...

Wilson-Combat-660x167.png

"Wilson Combat is respected by many shooters for making top quality firearms. From 1911 pistols to professional shotguns and high speed rifles, the company offers shooting solutions for a broad range of people with deep pockets.

California shooters, however, may have been unsure if the company would continue to serve them due to the spiderweb of laws placed on the manufacture, sale and ownership of weapons in The Golden State. It is tough, I would imagine, for a company to balance the legal research and engineering designs of making a California specific gun with the potential sales to a rather large market of shooters.

While the company offers “compliant” 1911 pistols, the current set of regulations have hampered Wilson Combat (and many other rifle companies) from selling AR-style guns to California customers. Now, however, the company has decided to use the Option Zero stock on its AR rifles to ensure they can continue to serve residents of California.

The Option Zero stock is a fixed stock made by Survivor Systems that eliminates the pistol grip that California’s elected representatives decided was unacceptable for its citizens to use. It has the general shape and angle of a pistol grip, but has a “wing” of polymer that prevents the thumb from wrapping around the back of the grip."

Here's a Ruger version:

There's another option though:

And the best option (for me anyway):
