Spent last week out in borrego springs for akrofest west, there were 40 aircraft that showed up for the event. I took the motorhome out and set up camp at the airport, dive bar called the propellor next to an airstrip in the middle of the desert, my kinda place. The town is pretty small, on one side of the sign it says welcome to borrego springs and on the other side it says now leaving borrego springs. Mexican joint in town had good food and margaritas, everyone from the event stayed at the resort, looks nice, but I enjoyed having some comforts set up on-site and the ability to bbq and take naps when I wanted. I kinda liked the vibe of the area, looks like a cool remote little desert town to spend the winters in.

Anyone know anything about this place?

Aerobatic events have several classes of competitors, each class has a sequence of maneuvers that the competitors are judged on by their peers. Some legit hardware and pilots were onsite, they don’t advertise these deals as thennit becomes an airshow with all the red tape that follows such events. Very inclusive and professional group of pilots, no dick measuring taking place as the group all seemed to have the skills and equipment to show up and do some legit flying.

Nice pictures! I was just at a backyard party over the weekend talking to this golf kid, he mentioned Borrego Springs and wanting to go and now you post this. I had never heard of it before this week.

I’ve been going down there since 82, mostly to Ocotillo Wells 20 minutes away!

From the airport Fonts Point is a few miles away and has an excellent View point for Sunrises & Sunsets - it is up a sandy wash, 2 wheels drive can make it but it’s best to air down the tires.

Wife and I would off road over in the jeep to Borrego have breakfast at Jillbertos and drive around town - looky loo’s …

There are a few decent restaurants & we want to try the Red Onion ….

Avery - ( Label guy ) paid to have a bunch of metal sculptures set up out on his property’s some are really cool to visit.

I liked it out there, I usually don’t put places I like on the internet as then it gets all fucked up, but I think this one is harsh enough at times to keep the riff raff away 😂

These guys were coming out of the desert at sunrise each morning and buzzing the airstrip, and then hauling ass back to where we they were staged, badass wake up call.

Is there still the big circle/round about deal in the center of town?

My parents and a bunch of close family friends would do easter at the palm canyon RV park every year and take jeeps into the park everyday. Palm Canyon is not very nice anymore, a serious bummer because it was a really cool place. Watched my grandpa chop his finger off with his trailer's WD hitch there too.. good times

That valley also has some really good ground water. I know a couple of the farmers that work the area and they don't have wells as good in production anywhere else they work.

Do you know if they were out netting goats? I have a friend that flies with them at times, looks identical to the helicopter they fly in and they do a lot of capture work out in that area.

edit... Yep, that's them, just zoomed in and saw the N48MP

The owner and pilot of that helicopter is a real cool dude, Jim Pope.

It's called Christmas Circle. Last time I drove through they were just adding some extra curbing on the east & west sides. Keeps people from cutting a left against traffic instead of going around the roundy-round.
Ground water has actually been an issue for a while now, the aquafer hasn't been particularly healthy as for replenishing itself. Friends son ran into a few hiccups.

do you know a lot about those planes? Any of them Thrush brand planes?

We used to make some parts for those, mostly crop duster style planes, just curious.

I live about an hour and 15 minutes from Borrego. It’s actually the only desert town inside of San Diego county. I worked down there for years and know every corner of that town.

Borrego is a big retirement community, there’s also many locals who work at the local resorts and golf courses. Otherwise everyone else commutes out of town to work. Not much industry there other service. The state park also drives a lot of tourism, especially when the wildflower blooms happen. Summers slow down with the heat, winter is busy with all the snowbirds

its a cool little town if your into nature, hiking, and camping. Not much else though. Ocotillo wells is about 15-20 minutes away if you want to off-road off highway vehicles.

@whiteworks when I used to work down there the Canadian air force would do short landing and full power take off in there C-130 Herc at the airport, I would pull over and watch everytime! So rad. Did you also see the pilot house rental across the street?

I know about a few of them, but not all. I do know I’d rather have a badass crop duster than anyone of these aerobatic deals, there is at least a useful purpose with one of those. The crop duster guys seem to have a pretty cool gig and can fly the shit out of those things.

I talked with the realtor who manages the pilot house, $4500 a month, or $300 a night. No pool though and you cannot stage OHV from the property. Unique property for sure and great for a flyin crowd.

Carlees is a pretty “interesting” bar on a Saturday night but I think their food was pretty good. LOL

Never ate there but the broiler smoke outside smelled like the steaks and burgers were probably tasty, besides, something about an old bar sign that has “charbroiled steaks“ on it tells me it has to be good

Been there dozens of times for camping, golf and work. We have rehabbed a few bank owned REOs there back in the day. Rams Hill is a top 100 golf course. Tons of offroading trails, water crossing, slot canyons, dropoffs and interesting shit to see. A day trip to Salton Sea is easy. A couple really nice places, and a couple affordable places. Improved camping, remote camping. Spring wildflowers, its the largest State park in CA, I think. And one of the largest parks in the country. Lots of options. Nightlife is minimal, Carlee's is about it. The Ace Hardware has propane.
