FYI. It’s short for bombogenesis, so I don’t think it’s a new name that the media is trying to hype up. It’s been around for a while.

Hoping for some massive snow in Mammoth

we can't just have rain anymore , it always needs to have a scary name attached to it.

Yep, we watched last night.

NO shit, all these hysteria quotes in one rain story :

BOMB Cyclone, 10s of million people are bracing, Rivers of rain, equal to a category 3 hurricane, up to a foot of rain ( always report the absolute worst case outcome even if it’s a 1 in a million chance), weather whiplash due to climate change. Ferocious sheets of rain, super charged storm, grave danger, but won’t end the drought, firehouse of tropical weather sling shooting at CA. 80 mph winds and 50’ waves.

I’m sure they will hone in on some bad places Monday, but Good God we wonder why there is so much fear and misinformation about covid.

Wait this is Northern California. Are we sure that the mention of Bomb doesn’t mean something else entirely?

Bomb cyclone! Atmospheric river!

I've been on planet Earth a pretty long time. During my late teenage and early adult years, I had cause to study weather, particularly what is called micro-meteorology. That just means the events that happen on a small scale, within the larger picture of thunderstorms, fronts, and such.

I flew hang gliders from really large mountains, and understanding thermal lift, microbursts, mountain waves, and similar phenomena was a requirement for high altitude soaring. Like 15,000-17,000 feet above sea level high altitude.

During all those years, and the years since then, I had never heard of bomb cyclones and atmospheric rivers. Now the media shouts out those words, proclaiming their danger and the hazard to existential life.

Note the language used by the "expert" quoted in the USA Today piece:

The storm was most severe in the northern and central portions of California and part of southern Oregon, with the greatest intensity lasting into Monday, he said. Rainfall of up to 2 inches an hour may come "too fast and too furious," leading to serious flooding and mudslides that could threaten lives and property, Porter added.

See that cleverly inserted reference to the movies? He's a real cutting edge guy.

So you'll have to excuse my skepticism about the subject. To me, it's just another small boy crying wolf.

Bomb cyclone is new this year but atmospheric river I have been hearing for a long time, usually it's an atmospheric river/pineapple express depending on what channel you listen to.

I told my wife about the atmospheric river 10 years ago. She did not believe me until I hooked her up with the info.

Were these gems of wisdom brought up in a "Futurecast"?

The sac area is somewhere near 5" on Sunday. Going to be interesting to see where all this lands over the next few days. The good side of this is it will do wonders for the soil profile. Most of this will just soak in.
Some runoff but not February style runoff.
