In the Austin in area, it's got to be Lake Travis. Huge and supposed to be one of the clearest waters around. Lots of lakes in TX to explore.

I live down by Lake Austin and work on Lake Travis. Hit me up and I can show you around the area if you come this way.

Possum Kingdom (near dallas) and Clear Lake (near Houston) are other "desirable" lakes here and Lake Belton I suppose can be considered fair.

Theres a couple others north of Lake Travis on the LCRA river chain (Lake Marble Falls and Lake LBJ) that I havent spent much time on yet but have heard good things about when were not having a flooding event.

As far as living here, if you want to be in more conservative areas, you want to be in the NW areas: Steiner Ranch, Lakeway, Oak Hill, Spicewood, Briarcliff. The main Metro area and South Austin is far left (think San Francisco but some of them still like guns). NorthEast regions are currently centrist. This is Roundrock, Leander, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, and some others

Look at the cedar park area of Austin. Close to lake Travis without the Austin prices. Also not far from Georgetown lake which can be a good time.

Shlbyintro hit the austin area nail on the head. Austin is fairly well built out so if you want land you'll have to be a decent ways out of town. I reccomend looking to the west its much nicer. As far as lakes around austin think of travis as havasu and austin as Parker. Other cool lakes in the state are Possum Kingdom, Conroe, Belton, LBJ, and Buchanan.

RD is spot on as well. Austin by far the most liberal place in Texas. I have no idea hownit compares to Cali though.

It’s like a slice of San Fran that escaped CA and settled in Texas.

Lake LBJ is fed from two rivers, the Colorado and the Llano. It's big enough (21 mi) to enjoy and is a nice longer cruise if you go up the Colorado arm. DO NOT go up past the first bridge up the Llano unless you have a good fiberglass guy. Shallow and rocky. Best part, it's one of the lakes in the chain that is constant level. When Buchanan and Travis are low from the droughts, LBJ is still full.

Lake Marble Falls is much smaller (just under 6 mi. long) and is normally constant level as well.

LBJ is nice, I've boated there before and a friend of mine has a condo there. It's constant level so you don't have to worry about droughts and such. There was a massive flood there a few years ago that put a lot of debris in the lake. I believe they drained the lake over the winter to clean it up and may do the same this winter as well. Horseshoe Bay and Marble Falls are nearby as well. Buchanan is pretty much in the middle of a bunch of small towns, if your looking for a big party lake, not Buchanan, if you want seclusion, it's worth checking out. Its the first lake in the chain so it's VERY susceptible to draughts. 2 years ago before the flood I think it was around 100 feet low. Lake Austin is constant level as well.

Not looking to replace, looking to move to Texas in 4-5 years but want to purchase some land now and eventually move. Just want to be near nice places to boat.

LOL, I wouldn't say it's quite that extreme. 😄 I'd agree with the rest of what you say though. The central Texas lakes that have been mentioned are about as close as you can get though as far as scenery and clear/pretty water. Start moving south and not so much.

My recommendation for this is get as north as possible and get as much property as you can!

Spicewood is still a good area to get a descent piece of property you can build on later that's still somewhat close to Austin and moderately priced but the prices have been climbing steadily. Currently priced at about $30k/acre

Some Lake Austin and Lake Travis pics in no particular order

If your look for large parcels of property close to lakes up towards fort worth look in jack county. Surrounded by several lakes possum kingdom, lake bridgeport, lake jacksboro, amon g carter,Graham and thats just a couple within 30 min.

I found 30 acres there a couple days ago for 120 just didn't have a stock tank built or i would have looked deeper into it.

@pkbullet is your main guy for possum kingdom info. As we haven't met yet he seems to enjoy it up north.

You should check out Canyon Lake Texas. Pretty cool area and you have River Road with all the bars and live entertainment right there.
