I hate my boat trailer and always have. It has a few rust spots, needs new bunks, has the old style bar to hold the bow eye, and I wouldn't mind going to disk brakes. Thinking a new trailer might be the way to go vs refurbing the existing one.

How much (roughly) is a no frills tandem axle trailer for something similar to a Eliminator Eagle 230?

Also wondering about the cost difference between SoCal and AZ. I could drag the boat out to Havasu and drop it off then return with the family to pick it up and go boating. Havasu is like 6-7 hours one way for me though :(

Thanks for all the help guys.

Call Vic from Bear Trailers, He supports RDP, His product is second to none!! 818-727-1585

My dad has been having boat trailer work done at Bear forever. Always had a great experience. I have a feeling Bear doesn't put out a $4k trailer though :)

I was told with all the new laws they can run between 4500 - 6K depending on what bells and whistles.

I seem to remember a place in the Phoenix area that was making trailers. Whoever mentioned them said they built nice trailers for a decent price.

So why triples? I have always thought it was way overkill for a 22 foot boat. Seems like it also increases the odds of a blowout since you have two more tires. Sure they have less weight on them but a 22 footer is already pretty light. I have to back into some pretty tight spots and crank the trailer pretty hard. I am sure the sidewalls on the tires are screaming.

Seems dumb to me too, especially for a 23' boat. If people paid more attention to trailer bearings, brakes, and lights instead of how many tires are on 'em it might be safer for all involved.

I put about $4500 in a trailer for a 21'. New almost everything, swing away, paint, leds etc. I was told I was about $1000 away from a brand new one. That was several years ago

All trailers on RDP have to be Triple, a prerequisite of joining RDP. Did you not get the email :D

I need to do this exact thing to my trailer, who did you use and was it a good experience? Feel free to PM me if you want to keep it off the boards.

Thanks

I have a NAS triple axle trailer for a 28ft Magic. It is currently at Extreme Trailers in SoCal being redone. I am having the entire trailer stripped down to metal, replacing wiring, break lines, repacking bearings, addling LED lights, fixing fender damage, Powder coating trailer and adding additional metal tie down hooks. All of this and its going to cost $2,600. That same trailer brand new is $6,500.

I had a couple blow outs and wanted to try out my insurance. I needed new fenders, some repainting of the steps and a couple lights. Let's just say Extreme took very good care of me and was able to give me ladder and LED's for nothing. I don't think they liked my insurance and wanted to stick it to them, but that might be speculation.

Which shop quoted that?

If your quote was 4500 with nothing fancy, then doesn't 4500 to 6500 sound right?:headscratch:
I have a customer that builds trailers that was telling me this yesterday as a matter of fact. Something about the brakes on trailers has changed. Not sure the specifics.

I got some quotes last year for a buddy and everyone was pretty much starting at 6k and up. Granted that was stainless fenders and upgrades.

When I do a new 28 Speedster with 400's, there will be another Kokopelli trailer under that as well :p

The aluminum I beam trailers have definitely piqued my interest.

I am not totally sold on the torsion axle that KoKopelli uses but I don't have any real reason for thinking that. I guess I have just been around leaf spring axle trailers for so long that the thought of rubber stretching and compressing just sounds a little funky. I imagine the rubber wears out eventually, too, right?

Also, I understand that they bolt the trailers together because the aluminum would crack at the welds so the bolting allows for some movement. Just seems like a rigid welded steel trailer that didn't twist and flex would be better for the boat.

That said, I don't know the first thing about designing trailers.

Most trailers sitting under custom boats in modern times run torsions. I have had more leaf spring trailers then I can count, and have had 2 or 3 torsion trailers. I prefer the torsions personally for a lot of reasons, but mainly because you can set your wheel spacing closer together on triples, and you can actually adjust ride height a little by moving the Arm on the end if you want.

Interesting. Thanks. How long so they last before they need to be rebuilt or serviced. For a leaf spring system, the answer to both of those questions if basically never.

Despite my comments above on aluminum trailers and torsion axles, I realize that there are some pretty expensive boats sitting on trailers like these. That makes the construction method and hardware pretty hard to argue with. I fear change :)

I don't know why my guys are not switching to aluminum trailers. I just had in built for my 30' Proline offshore fishing boat and it is sweet. I had it done at TNT in Tampa Bay. Told them what I wanted and they had it built to my boats specs in 5 days. It cost less then $6k.

I am sick of the rust spots and dealing with a metal trailer on my ultra. When or if I ever get a new trailer for that boat it is going to be aluminum.

My trailer was swapped out to torsion axels in 07' with zero issues.

I am getting a no frills quote from Kokopelli Trailers. Will be interesting to see the comparison between that and a standard steel construction.

I called them the other day. Got the receptionist. Took my info, told me the owner would email me a quote later on that day and he would call to discuss it also. Haven't heard back yet, so we'll see

I was just on the phone with Tiff the owners wife and mentioned this. She said all quotes have been sent out. They have their facebook and website links in the email though and sometimes that ends up going to a spam folder because of that.

Please give them a call and follow up today and they will provide the numbers and figure out the email deal. I didn't know your names other then the screen names so I couldn't tell her which quotes weren't received.
