With the lake so low boats are being recovered out of Shasta. This one from Hirtz Bay. Apparently it's a 1980 hull and the tags were from 1981, so basically this was someones brand new pride and joy when it went down.

I guess we know what happened to the drive the that is missing

I can see it happening on Shasta. a waterlogged log floating just under the surface. happened to a guy I knew with a stevens flatbottom bent the prop shaft and damaged the prop & rudder. first day of a 2 week vacation, mid 1970's

I damn near got one on Trinity. Had friends on the tube behind the boat. Scared the shit out of them. Went to find is and try to drag it to shore, but it was gone? Whole damn tree with one limb above the surface and it vanished.

looks like a Hondo/Cole, do you know the owner/Story ?

..
It's a Bayon , they were made here in Redding ,CA . When the boat was less than a year old the owner hit something in the water and it sank very fast . He was picked up by a passing Houseboat . The boat was a 1980 and sank in 1981 .

I read that he worked for Bayon and it was one of their boat show boats which he then bought.

Funny cause I may have seen it at the Sacramento boat show that year.

Curious if locating the owner, is he liable for the recovery costs now?

“Hey we found you old boat!”

“Sweet!”

“You owe us $7200…”

Owner: here’s $200….if you’d have done it in the ‘80s instead of being lazy, it would have been much less expensive”

At the drag boat races around 2015, they were auctioning off a jet boat that had been recovered after being under water about 15-20 years. They guy that bought it, cleaned it up, new engine, and ran it.

He still has it today. Coincidentally, he lives up by lake Shasta.

Unless he paid cash for the boat it was likely insured... HOTBOAT mag had an article about a flattie that was on the bottom of Havasu for a couple of decades.... "Sunken Treasure" was the article and I use to have the issue. Blown Hemi...The boat was cleaned up and ran....

Theres a hondo down by the damn. I know, I was there when it sank in 78. Being pulled behind our friends houseboat. Nobody is quite sure what or how it happend. But we did see it for about 10 seconds when somebody did notice.
Best speculation is that something was caught in the j-drain, boat started filling up throughout the morning and afternoon, then maybe some waves over the side and the tow rope broke with weight. Nobody knows for sure. Nice boat for sure.

Parker/havasu dam? Good luck with that recovery. Deep as hell.

I would have to go back on my Facebook, haven't been on in a very long time, but I have a picture if me in an old Hondo flatty that appeared near Callville Bay. It was near the water line, probably a hike to get to it now. I'll see if I can dig the picture up.

Cali Has a fun to dispose of abandoned boats I think the department of boating and waterways administers that this would probably fall into that category.

pretty sure he was referring to Shasta dam, anyway Reaching 235 feet below the riverbed, the Parker Dam ranks today as the deepest dam in the world. so maybe the riverbottom not so deep itself...?

All but sunk my 1979 25’ Eliminator Day Cruiser at speed in the middle of Isabella. I felt a strong bump and heard a thump at 70 and within seconds water was at my bare feet. I hit the throttle full out and ran it up on the beach. There was a dinner plate size hole in the hull. I think I hit a submerged log. The insurance Co. totalled it. It was under insured so I got to keep it with the payout. Eliminator wanted a ton of money to repair it so I ended up selling it as is.

For its age, the boat was pristine. Teague built (lightly blown) BBC motor, Bravo drive/prop, all new controls/gauges/stereo/etc. I miss it to this day.

Pic is from the 2003 Eliminator Regatta in Havasu.

It wasn't "fun" paying to dispose of this donor. But it was a blast watching it get crushed

What? Parker/Havasu dam? Why would I be talking about there when the subject is about Shasta lake? Like I said, that was 1978, the boat is still there.
