My brothers buddy asked if i could pull his motor apart to see whats wrong with it, (blown Head gasket) took it apart at my house my brother let him know haven't heard shit from the guy in probably a year. Doesn't answer the phone return texts nothing. How would I go about getting the title in my name ? I bet the boat running is worth 4-5k. Tired of looking at it, want to fix it and sell or trade it for something else.

Only thing I know about the owner is he just bought a house in Corona and hes a firefighter. I don't have an address or anything......

Let me preface this by saying I'm not to sure if the rules have changed because it's been a very long time since I dealt with this situation in California.

You can file a storage lien, you're allowed to asses a reasonable value of the cost of service performed to the boat along with a value for the time the boat was stored at your home. Once you have established a dollar amount you will need to file the lien with the DMV and issue public notice regarding the lien. The owner of the vehicle or boat in this case has 30 days to redeem their property, if they do not redeem the property it will legally become yours.

If you had the boat for a month or two I'd say ride it out but if it's been a year you are completely justified in taking ownership of the boat.

Mechanics lien may not work because you don't have a signed work order...

And it's not a repair facility with rates posted and so on.... Call a lien guy and find out....good luck.

Is he a firefighter for the city of corona?

Not sure, all I know is his Girlfriend was a bitch and was telling him how they need to buy a one of those 25' boats, you know like the ones we saw in the channel in Havasu !!!:skull

Talked to him a couple times after I picked up the boat found a 3500.00 build sheet on the motor from the season before, turns out he didn't know you need to put a water pressure regulator on it

I can find him if he's Orange County fire. things like this have a way of getting away from you sometimes, especially with a chick like that, lol.
If you have a name I'd let some of us here that work in that arena try to track him down and give him a crack at getting it back.

Not holding it for ransom or anything, if he wants it come get it, if not sign the title over to me...... I get it but its not like its a Go Pro that I borrowed, Its a BOAT !!!!! :p . Seems too me he doesnt care about it, im just tired of looking at it and i'm not about to put the little money i do have into something I don't have a title too !

There is some kind of "Abandoned Boat" Title that you can request. The DMV or Game & Fish will try to contact the original owner to release the title before issuing you a new one.

Ask me how I know...

When I moved here in 1998, I brought my brand new Sea Doo GTX from Illinois. Less than a year later it gets stolen from my place in Scottsdale. 3 years later I get a letter from Illinois DMV "You need to release the title to the new owner in Apache Junction, AZ"... so I call the cops and after a bunch of bull crap, I get my wave runner back. I ask to press charges and the cops tell me that the guy was in the same situation as you... "Someone left it in his yard for 3 years... couldn't remember his friends name... figured he'd try to title it."

So anyway, tweekers got to hold onto my Sea Doo for 3 years, never even put 1 hour on the damn thing and in the end, Illinois DMV tracked me down to confirm that I was the title holder.

From what I remember this is pretty much how AZ does it too. Good luck!
