What would cause a rear main seal to blow. As in gushing oil. My daughters boyfriend has a chevy traverse or equinox.

A few weeks ago after an oil change it blew a rear main seal. It hadnt been leaking , raN fine. About 105,000 miles. Spent the money to fix it and it happened again.

Installed improperly would be my first guess. Extreme end play in the crank or possibly trans input or pump issues possibly. A siezed oil bypass and cold oil on startup maybe, but never seen it actually happen...

I would need more information and having the old seal and an opportunity to inspect the crankshaft in order to do a reasonable post mortem and root cause analysis.

We are sure you have experience with the real blown main seal. Probably had a string installed so you can cinch it back up to keep it all in.
